Gerald Washington Appoints Malik Scott As New Trainer, No Longer Tied With PBC

At the age of 40, Gerald Washington is looking to resurrect his career for one last run.

The 11-year veteran heavyweight contender has appointed Deontay Wilder coach Malik Scott as his new head trainer.

Washington was last trained by Hall of Fame fighter and coach Buddy McGirt for his most recent bout against Ali Demirezen in January 2022.

In that fight, Washington was ahead on two of the three scorecards by one point but was fading late, eventually suffering an 8th-round TKO loss in a bour that was scheduled to go 10 rounds.

It marked the fifth loss in Washington’s (20-5-1, 13 KOs) last seven fights dating back to 2017 – all via stoppages against the likes of Deontay Wilder, Jarrell Miller, Adam Kownacki, Charles Martin, and Demirezen.

Washington has been a Premier Boxing Champions staple in recent years, but in an interview with BS.com, he said he’s now a free agent.

“I don’t have any contractual obligations right now. I’m looking for a fight – anybody, anywhere,” said Washington. “I have to get back into the mix. I have to make some moves. I want to finish off with some big fights, get some good wins for myself and see where that takes me.”

Washington – a former college football player at USC – recently almost got thrown back into the fray. He said he was one of the opponents considered for Anthony Joshua before the former two-time heavyweight champion ended up signing a deal to fight Jermaine Franklin on April 1.

“The best version of myself is yet to come. I’m working to put this thing together to go out there and give it another go. I’m willing to fight anyone,” said Washington. “I understand my position and where I am at. I understand what I need to do. I’m not worried about anybody. I want to get in there and handle business. Anyone who can help me get some action, that’s what I’m looking for.”

Washington and Scott are training at the Brickhouse Boxing Club in North Hollywood, California.

“Malik has always been a guy I respected and looked up to and learned a lot from,” said Washington. “He’s always given me good work and great advice. I wanted to work with someone I knew and trusted.”

Can see him getting picked for some opponents on DAZN or Sky in the UK.

Maybe the likes of Whyte, Parker, some other upcomers.

6 fights since wilder knocked him out 6 years ago. is that considered being active? I guess.

his management really did a number on him. to be fair I he maybe really needed time to recover in between from all the knockout losses.

but again: 6 fights in 6 years from age 34 after challenging for the title til now at age 40 claiming a sort of comeback where he wants to fight whomever is just weird.

Kingsley Ibeh Flattens Gerald Washington In San Salvador

Last night in San Salvador, Nigerian heavyweight Kingsley Ibeh scored a pretty impressive third-round KO win over veteran Gerald Washington. 31 year old Ibeh, known as “The Black Lion,” unleashed a huge left hand to the head with around :16 clicks gone in round-three and down went Washington, heavily.

The 43 year old Californian made it back to his feet but the third man waved it off, with some mild complaining by Washington. What was shaping up as a possible slugfest ended in a veritable flash. Ibeh is now 16-2-1(14), while Washington, who really does need to think about calling it a day, falls to 21-7-1(14).

Ibeh’s Power And Momentum Growing Fast

Southpaw Ibeh, a giant of a man at 288 pounds, looked to be in good shape last night, as did the 250 pound Washington to be fair, and the two looked for openings in the first session. Ibeh was the sharper of the two, yet not too much happened in the opening couple of rounds. Then, countering a Washington attack, Ibeh cracked home with his bomb of a left hand to the head and that was all she wrote. Ibeh knelt in a corner and gave thanks for his win.

Beaten only by Jared Anderson and, in his second pro outing, by Waldo Cortes Acosta, Ibeh was also held to a draw by useful Italian heavyweight Guido Vianello, Ibeh has now won 11 fights on the bounce. Maybe Ibeh, who can punch, will go on and land himself a bigger fight.

Washington’s Career Nearing Its Final Chapter

As for Washington, he’s had a good career, during which he met plenty of top names and managed a win or two over some of them, but now seems to be the time for him to retire. Washington – who has fought, amongst others, Eddie Chambers, Deontay Wilder, Jarrell Miller, Adam Kownacki, Robert Helenius, Charles Martin and Derek Chisora – is now 7-3 in his last ten bouts.
