Comparing Terence Crawford to Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Post by gilgamesh »

So naturally this is going to be THE discussion in Boxing circles for the next decade at minimum. So we might as well get it started now wouldn't ya say Gentlemen?

Obviously a lot of us are stoked on Crawford at the moment with his biggest page in Boxing history having just been written, but let's try our best to try to look at what these 2 have done in proper historical context.

Floyd Mayweather Jr beat more world champions and hall of famers. He even was much more dominant when he beat Canelo Alvarez than Terence "Bud" Crawford's performance.

But, Floyd has never been undisputed champion at any weight class. Bud is undisputed champion at 3 weight classes. Something remarkable in today's boxing history.

Pretty Boy Floyd defining win: W12 Manny Pacquiao
Bud's defining win: W12 Sail "Canelo" Alvarez

I think the Canelo win a bigger single achievement than anything on Floyd's record. That's just one thing, but it's a big thing.

I agree.

So Crawford's best win is Canelo who Floyd has also defeated many years ago.

Crawford's 2nd best win is Spence, 3rd best win probably Shawn Porter.

Floyd has Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto that are all bigger wins than Spence I'd say. As for opponents that would be comparable to Shawn Porter. I suppose Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Robert Guerrero, Diego Corrales would all fit that mold.

There's definitely a lot more depth to Floyd's record overall. Crawford generally won in more spectacular and exciting fashion.

I think Crawford does in fact need a few more marquee wins to be able to definitively say "I was better than Floyd Mayweather"

I personally think he'd have beat him if they had a head to head fight prime for prime, but record wise he still falls just a little bit short.

Crawford has been a Undisputed Champion in 3 weight classes now though while I don't believe Floyd was ever Undisputed anywhere. Floyd was clearly the man to beat, but never bothered gathering up all the titles in any 1 weight class.

I feel like Crawford's win over Canelo carries the same kinda historical weight as Leonard's win over Hagler. You may prefer one over the other, but they're basically in the same realm of achievement. Which is extremely high.

Would have been a fantastic fight between the 2. Even though they both don't carry the same power, it could have been a sort of Leonard-Hearns affair had they been prime around the same time.

- Craw won a Turki fight to nowhere that nobody but those two wanted vs Canelo.

Both completely unmarked looked like they had taken a stroll through the park holding hands, a top $100Mil payday for Canelo.

Please, the formerly highly rated Spence has be shot to shyte since he took flying lessons with his Ferrari.

Earning$? Craw has made a some $mils as the only fighter Arum ever lost $$$ on, so I'd say his powers of persuasion on Turki are worth more than he would be fighting anyone else. The top 6 undefeated supermiddles on Boxrec here:

He's been fighting once a year since 2020 and will likely be 38 at the time of his next fight. He's a good fighter, but never impressed me as someone special and really doesn't have the time left to change my mind.

Bivol? Can someone send me the fantasy good stuff you guys got into?

Yes ultimately Crawford's lack of activity, and lack of big fights or even semi-big fights is going to be the biggest blow to his legacy. He has a handful of big fights.

Most fighters with the amount of Pro fights that he has, has faced a lot more stiff competition than him.
