Tim Tszyu unveils new 'Aussie super team'
Tim Tszyu has revealed a new backroom team as he looks ahead to the next stage of his career.
The Australian star will visit the US to work in gyms on both the east and west coast gyms, but has announced what he’s called an “Aussie super team.”
Darcy Ellis, son of Australian boxing great Lester, has been hired in a managerial role, and experienced fixer Mike Altamura has been brought in as a matchmaking strategist.
Making up the new group is Australian boxing legend Jeff Fenech, who has been hired as a mentor.
Tszyu is 30, and has a 25-3 (18 KOs) record, having lost three of his last four, twice to Sebastian Fundora and once to Bakhram Murtazaliev.
His last bout, a stoppage loss to Fundora in Las Vegas in July, has served as the catalyst for change.
“Everything I want now is a different approach,” Tszyu told Code Sports. “I want to walk in, I want to be surrounded by different world champions, I want to have someone that’s a motivator.
Altamura said: “Matchmaking is everything, especially when it’s a rebuild phase of a fighter’s career. We know that as long as the hunger’s there and there’s still a fire burning within him, we need to give him every opportunity to build forward and build stronger.”
Fenech believes Tszyu has a lot more to offer.
“I said a few years ago that I think Tim might have been the best, better than me, better than Kostya, better than all of us,” said the three-weight world champion and International Boxing Hall of Famer. “I still think that he can do that. I think he can achieve things with the right people around him.”
The new faces have replaced trainers Glen Jennings and Igor Golubev and cutman Mark Gambin.

You can't put the toothpaste back into the tube.

I like Tim as a fighter, but he's often too brave for his own good. In reality, until he starts moving his head and stops using his face to block punches, he's a KO waiting to happen. One only hopes he doesn't get seriously messed up in the ring.
Re: Tim Tszyu unveils new 'Aussie super team'
Calling Lester Ellis a “boxing great” is a bit much, but I sort of wonder if Tim should fight at middleweight, since the division is devoid of talent and star power at the top and he could give most of the belt holders a good go

Can he learn defence, while fighting at a second tier level?
Or will he have to reign it back and reset?
Tim has the motivation, that's never been in question, neither has his heart. But is it too late?

Based on his performances at the highest level, how would he have fairer against Jermell?
Re: Tim Tszyu unveils new 'Aussie super team'
I like Tim. He probably still has a career in Boxing if he wants, but his career is going to have to be cherry picked to the point that he makes Adrien Broner's level of competition look like Muhammad Ali's.
Thankfully he's Australian so he can probably squeeze another 5 or 6 years out of that because even mediocre as he's proven himself to be, he's the best Aussie Boxer by miles.

It will be interesting to see if the new "super team" can rebuild him and to what extent. Heart and courage have never been an issue for Tszyu, sometimes to his detriment.
