Amir Khan to promote first major boxing card in Nigeria

Former junior welterweight champion Amir Khan will promote a boxing card in Nigeria in October.

The card will be headlined by cruiserweights Brandon Glanton and Rocky Fielding in Lagos.

Khan, 38, has turned his hand to promoting fights since his last fight -- a defeat to Kell Brook -- in 2022.

"I'm thrilled to bring world-class boxing and the world's eyes onto Nigeria for the first time," Khan said.

"This event is about more than just fights -- it's about inspiring a new generation and showcasing the heart and skill of Nigerian boxers alongside international stars.

"Lagos is ready to shine."

Glanton vs. Fielding -- which will be held on Nigerian Independence Day on Oct. 1 -- tops the first major boxing card to be held in Nigeria.

British light heavyweight Dan Azeez (21-2-1, 13 KOs), who has Nigerian heritage, will look to get back to winning ways on the undercard.

"Fighting in Nigeria on Independence Day is a dream come true. This is for my heritage, my people, and my pride" Azeez said.

"I'm ready to put on a show and honor Nigeria with every punch I throw."

Brandon Glanton-Rocky Fielding top Nigeria bill featuring Richard Commey and Dan Azeez

Former WBA light heavyweight beltholder Rocky Fielding and cruiserweight contender Brandon Glanton will fight in Nigeria on October 1.

The bout will be promoted by former 140lbs champion Amir Khan, who is working with Dr Ezekiel Adamu’s Balmoral Group Promotions.

Other familiar names on the bill include light heavyweight contender Dan Azeez, former champ Richard Commey, and the charismatic former soldier Elvis Ahorgah.

The card will be broadcast on DAZN and the Nigerian Independence Day event is also being held in association with the National Sports Commission of Nigeria.

Glanton, 33, is 20-3 (17 KOs) and is coming off an April decision loss to ex-WBO cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith.

Liverpool’s Rocky Fielding, 38 and inactive for three years, is 30-3 (18 KOs), and suffered a high-profile loss to Canelo Alvarez back in 2018 in New York and has not boxed since a stoppage defeat to Azeez in Bournemouth in 2022.

“I’m coming to Lagos to settle the score with Rocky Fielding. Our styles guarantee fireworks, and I’m ready to prove I belong at the top of the cruiserweight division,” said Glanton. “This fight is my chance to show the world what I’m capable of.”

Fielding said: “After three years out, I’m back with a fire to claim my place at the top. “Beating Glanton in Lagos will show everyone I’m ready for a world title shot. The cruiserweight division is wide open, and I’m coming for it all.”

Azeez, a former British, Commonwealth and European champion, is 21-2-1 (13 KOs) and the British-Nigerian is having his first fight in Africa.

“Fighting in Nigeria on Independence Day is a dream come true,” said Azeez. “This is for my heritage, my people, and my pride. I’m ready to put on a show and honor Nigeria with every punch I throw.”

Veteran Commey is 30-5-1 (27 KOs), and he will face Kazakh Ray Seitzhanov, 13-1 (9 KOs), while the often-entertaining Aorgah is 14-4 (13 KOs).

Also on the card, Nigeria lightweight Basit Adebayo, 9-0 (4 KOs), will face Tanzania’s Tony Rashid, 17-4-3 (11 KOs), for the WBO Africa Title, and 5-0 junior welter Kerem Ozman meets 12-0 (8 KOs) Tosin Osaigbovo. Undefeated lightweight Yusuf Adeniji, 12-0 (10 KOs) is on the card, too.

ROCKY FIELDING OUT, MARCUS BROWNE-BRANDON GLANTON SET FOR LAGOS ON OCT. 1

Former light heavyweight world title challenger Marcus Browne has stepped in to fight Brandon Glanton in Lagos on October 1 following Rocky Fielding's withdrawal.

Glanton and Fielding had been scheduled to meet in the main event of the Amir Khan-promoted show in the Nigerian capital later this year.

Fielding (30-3, 18 KOs) was set to fight for the first time since he was stopped by Dan Azeez in December 2022 but it has been confirmed the 38-year-old from Liverpool has withdrawn.

That news has opened the door for Staten Island-born Browne (25-2, 16 KOs) to face compatriot Glanton on just five weeks’ notice.

The 34-year-old has fought only four times in the last six years, with a 2-2 record. He beat Denis Grachev and Adrian Taylor on points over 10 rounds but also suffered damaging stoppage defeats to Jean Pascal and former undisputed champion Artur Beterbiev.

His loss to the big-punching Russian, which took place on December 17, 2021, was his first attempt at a world title and also his final fight at 175 pounds.

He moved up to cruiserweight to face Taylor the following August but has not boxed since, while a proposed June 28 return against Olanrewaju Durodola was cancelled on fight day due to unspecified medical concerns.

Now he will get his chance to further establish himself in the division against Glanton (20-3, 17 KOs), who is coming off the back of a 12-round decision defeat by Chris Billam-Smith at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in April.

Browne said: “It’s been a long time coming. Glanton just wrote himself a check his ass won’t be able to cash!”

Glanton added: “This fight has been in the making for a long time now. It’s not only a fight that was supposed to happen, but that needs to happen. Not just for boxing but for the two of us to finally settle things. Marcus Browne is legitimately a bad human being. On October 1 there will be a reckoning.”

The event will take place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos State, Nigeria and will also feature Andrew Tabiti in the chief support while Ghana’s former IBF lightweight champion Richard Commey will face undefeated Londoner Shiloh Defreitas on the undercard.

Marcus Browne cruises up a class and takes a challenge a continent away

Marcus Browne is continuing his quest to become a two-division titleholder, and he believes the next step is knocking out Brandon Glanton on Wednesday in Lagos, Nigeria. The fighters are set to square off in a 10-round cruiserweight bout that headlines a card in the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

Browne, 25-2 (16 KOs), is a 2012 Olympian who held the WBA interim title after defeating Badou Jack in 2019. He then lost the title in his first defense, against Jean Pascal. After a defeat against Artur Beterbiev in a title fight in 2021, Browne returned to the ring as a cruiserweight, stopping Adrian Taylor in 2023 in his debut in the division.

“The adjustment is natural,” Browne, 34, told Boxing Scene. “I’ve been a light heavyweight since I was 18 years old.”

Glanton, 20-3 (17 KOs), is a career cruiserweight who has spent the majority of his career as a power puncher in the division. He might be best known for a back-and-forth slugfest with Efetobor Apochi, a Fight of the Year-type bout in 2021. Glanton won that fight by split decision, but the 33-year-old from Newnan, Georgia, has been snakebitten the past few years.

After a split decision loss to David Light on ProBox TV in 2022, Glanton lost a majority decision against Soslan Asbarov in his next fight. After three knockout wins, Glanton dropped a unanimous decision to Chris Billam-Smith in November.

Browne is unfazed by his opponent’s experience in the division.

“Brandon is a decent fighter, but I’m going to knock him out,” Browne said.

Browne, who trained with Gary Stark Sr and Sherif Younan, as well as Dave Paladino, who served as his strength trainer, views the bout no differently than any other fight. Although the bout will take place a continent away from his home in the United States, Browne is approaching it as business as usual.

“We left 10 days prior to the fight, and nothing was different than any other fight,” he said. “I’m focused and ready to go.”
