Mary Spencer-Mikaela Mayer For WBA Junior Middleweight Title Set For Oct. 30

Mary Spencer will defend her WBA junior middleweight title against two-division world champion Mikaela Mayer at Montreal Casino, Montreal on Thursday, October 30.

In the night's co-feature, Wilkens Mathieu (14-0, 10 KOs) steps up when facing experienced countryman Shakeel Phinn (27-3-2, 17 KOs) over 10 rounds for two regional titles.

Eye of The Tiger president Camille Estephan also announced the undercard will feature a series of unbeaten rising talents across multiple weight divisions, including welterweight Christopher Guerrero (15-0, 9 KOs), hard-hitting light heavyweight Mehmet Unal (13-0, 11 KOs) and exciting 140-pound contender Arthur Biyarslanov (19-0, 16 KOs).

Junior lightweight contender Leila Beaudoin (13-1, 2 KOs) returns four months after stopping former title challenger Elhem Mekhaled, while crowd-pleasing junior lightweight Thomas Chabot (11-0, 8 KOs) will end a 14-month layoff.

Accomplished amateur Erik Israyelyan (2-0, 2 KOs) is also to return at 130-pounds, with all of the above against opponents to be confirmed.

Spencer (10-2, 6 KOs), The Ring's No. 4-rated junior middleweight, was a decorated amateur who claimed three world championships (2005, 2008 and 2010), a 2011 Pan-Am Games gold medal and an eight-time national champion.

She tore through early competition after turning professional in summer 2021 before Femke Hermans outpointed her over ten rounds twice, first by unanimous and majority decision the following year.

After returning to winning ways, she beat Naomi Mannes on points to claim the WBA interim title in September and was upgraded to full champion as existing beltholder Terri Harper pursued her championship options back down at lightweight.

Having dominated Ogleidis Suarez over ten rounds in a triumphant home defence on April 10, she faces a career-best challenge against a two-weight world champion also seeking to make history.

Mayer (21-2, 5 KOs), The Ring's No. 1-rated welterweight contender, was similarly a standout in the unpaid ranks and represented America at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

She worked her way up before winning the vacant WBO junior lightweight title with a 10-round points win over Ewa Brodnicka in October 2020. The 35-year-old added Ring and IBF titles when outpointing Maiva Hamadouche the following November.

Mayer narrowly came up short against WBC titleholder Alycia Baumgardner, losing a split decision in a further title unification.

Unperturbed, she bounced back with two victories before being edged out in another split decision defeat, this time against Natasha Jonas for the IBF welterweight title. Since then, Mayer has dethroned and subsequently defended the WBO welterweight strap in an entertaining two-fight series with Sandy Ryan.

In late August, news broke of Mary Spencer defending her WBA junior middleweight title against Mikaela Mayer on October 30.

Today, we learned that Arthur Biyarslanov (19-0, 16 KOs) will defend his NABF junior welterweight title against former IBF 140-pound champion Sergey Lipinets (18-4-1, 13 KOs) as part of next month's undercard at Montreal Casino, Montreal.

Scheduled for ten rounds, this represents a crossroads contest for both and will allow the winner to break into the division's upper echelons.

"We feel Biyarslanov has the potential to achieve at 140 what Artur Beterbiev did at 175," Camille Estephan, the Eye of The Tiger president told The Ring.

"Now he has a chance to prove it. We have a guy that is very good, an ex-champion, who hits hard and is a southpaw. This is going to be a hellavu fight, a chance for him to get to the world stage and say, 'I'm ready for all the world champions.'

The evening's co-feature will see rising prospect Wilkens Mathieu (14-0, 10 KOs) face by far the best opponent of his burgeoning career to date in the form of Shakeel Phinn (27-3-2, 17 KOs).

Rounding out the card, Turkish light heavyweight contender Mehmet Unal (13-0, 11 KOs) takes on Ralfs Vilcans (18-2, 7 KOs) over 10 rounds. Christopher Guerrero (15-0, 9 KOs) faces William Andres Herrera (17-4, 7 KOs) in a 10-rounder at welterweight.

An unbeaten battle awaits at junior lightweight when Thomas Chabot (11-0, 8 KOs) meets Logan Clouthier (6-0, 4 KOs) over eight rounds, while Erik Israyelyan (2-0, 2 KOs) faces Dylan Schroeder (6-0, 4 KOs).

Chechnya-born Biyarslanov moved to Canada at a young age. He was a successful amateur, representing his adopted homeland at the 2016 Olympics where he lost at the quarter-final stage.

The 30-year-old southpaw turned professional in the fall of 2018, though his initial progress was something of a slow burn.

He signed with Eye of The Tiger early last year and has made three NABF title defences since stopping Elias Mauricio Haedo for the vacant title in June 2024.

His most notable performance of late saw him become the first person to stop Mohamed Mimoune (24-7, 5 KOs) with a second-round finish in February, after which he needed three rounds to dismiss Antonio Collado in early June.

Lipinets was a kickboxer before switching to boxing and turned pro in 2014.

He moved quickly and scored wins over then unbeaten Haskell Rhodes (UD 10), Levan Ghvamichava (KO 5) and Leonardo Zappavigna (KO 8).

After Terence Crawford vacated his junior welterweight throne, Lipinets was well positioned to face and beat Akihiro Kondo (UD 12) for the IBF title in November 2017.

However, his title reign was short-lived as Mikey Garcia outpointed him over 12 rounds four months later. A move to welterweight saw him breathe new life into his career, beating former titleholder Lamont Peterson (TKO 10), a 12-round draw with Custio Clayton before being well beaten by future beltholder Jaron Ennis, prompting a move back down in weight.

Since then, his form has been patchy. He scored victories over former 135-pound titlist Omar Figueroa Jr. (RTD8) and outpointed Robbie Davies Jr. (UD10) but has also lost to Michel Rivera (UD10) and rising star Adam Azim stopped him in nine on February 1.

Ben Shalom Explains Why Lauren Price-Mikaela Mayer Undisputed Bout Fell Apart

Fresh from an excellent points win over Natasha Jonas to headline BOXXER's historic all-women's card at Royal Albert Hall in March, unified welterweight champion Lauren Price had a keen eye on Mikaela Mayer-Sandy Ryan 2 later that month.

After all, she was determined to face the winner and secure an undisputed matchup in the process. Mayer prevailed in a repeat decision victory, as the Welshwoman predicted, but there was then no traction on brokering a deal between the two sides.

Price had eyed an August return, outdoors in the Welsh capital of Cardiff, where she'd beaten Mayer's compatriot and former two-weight champion Jessica McCaskill the previous year, but that proved an optimistic timeline.

BOXXER and Top Rank had their respective TV deals with Sky and ESPN expire over the summer, making it harder to find a broadcaster willing to pay the requisite figures needed for an undisputed world title fight which didn't seem likely even a year earlier.

Mayer (21-2, 5 KOs) has been unequivocal about not waiting for fighters or opportunities to present themselves, instead taking on all challenges making the most sense. It's why she will move up another weight division, facing WBA 154-pound beltholder Mary Spencer, as the headline attraction on an Eye of the Tiger show in Montreal come October 30.

Esteemed amateur and 2012 Olympian Spencer (10-2, 6 KOs) has been the beneficiary of a weakened class of contenders at 154-pounds, since undisputed heavyweight beltholder Claressa Shields departed for good in 2021. Mayer, given her championship experience, will head into next month's matchup as the favourite and seek to make history herself before assessing her options - including a potential showdown with her former Olympic teammate.

In a press release, the 35-year-old addressed the landscape by saying: "I couldn't get the undisputed fight with Lauren, so rather than take an easy touch, I looked for the next best challenge. I'll dethrone Mary and then head back down to welterweight to challenge Price."

When asked about the forthcoming plan for Price, Shalom told The Ring: "We've been speaking to her, she had a little injury which kept her out longer than expected but will be back in November."

"We're planning a big fight for her now, we wanted Mikaela but the terms and money has to be right. Everything needs to align and it felt like she didn't want to come back to the UK - the money for this fight is in Cardiff - I don't think it does the same anywhere else. If we can [make it], it involves Mikaela coming here and for the moment, she's not willing to."

That line of thinking matches what Price told The Ring in April, that as far as selling tickets was concerned, the fight would draw more interest in Cardiff compared to anywhere else.

If Mayer's Top Rank handlers lured her into accepting a stateside showdown, it would cost more money and without a broadcasting deal, they couldn't afford to take that risk.

Mary Spencer-Mikaela Mayer to stream live on Top Rank Classics FAST channel

Mikaela Mayer's bid to become a three-division titlist will come with some form of access for U.S. viewers.

Top Rank confirmed that the October 30 clash between Mayer and reigning WBA 154lbs titlist Mary Spencer will stream live on its Top Rank Classics FAST channel. The scheduled 10-round bout will top a five-fight telecast that will air live from Montreal Casino in Montreal, Canada.

The OTT platform - formed in August - is available on ROKU, Tubi, VIZIO and Pluto TV.

Spencer, 10-2 (6 KOs) will attempt the second defense of her title. The 40-year-old, Montreal-based boxer claimed an interim version of the belt last September. She was upgraded to full titleholder after Terri Harper vacated to commit to her current WBO lightweight title reign.

Her lone fight in between that period came in a dominant 10-round, unanimous decision victory over Ogleidis Suarez on April 10. The bout took place at the same venue that will host her challenge of Mayer, and where Spencer will appear for the fifth straight time and eighth overall.

Mayer (21-2, 5 KOs) has grown accustomed to fighting on the road - this bout marks her fifth bout beyond stateside borders, all within a seven-fight span.

However, it will mark her first outside of an ESPN platform. The 2016 U.S. Olympian has seen the entirety of her eight-year pro career carried live either on ESPN and ESPN+, given Top Rank's previous output deal with the cable giant which expired this past July.

Even all four of Mayer's fights in the U.K. were carried live on ESPN+, customarily the case whenever Top Rank had ties to another show and where U.S. TV/streaming rights were in need.

Regardless of the platform, Mayer takes aim to add a fourth major title to her arsenal. She previously unified the IBF and WBO titles at 130lbs and still holds the WBO 147lbs belt.

The inability to lure lineal and unified WBC, WBA and IBF welterweight champion Lauren Price into a full unification bout prompted the jump in weight.

Mayer plans to weigh all future options after October 30, regardless of the outcome. The dream to become undisputed champion is very much on the table and remains a Price pen stroke away. Additionally, Mayer is open to entertaining any reasonable option to fight for a 140lbs title.

The first order of business, however, is to unseat Spencer and announcer her arrival in a 154lbs division desperately need in need of a profile boost. Mayer hopes to provide that, even as she and Top Rank navigate without a long-term platform deal in place for the moment.

Top Rank continues to explore different avenues in keeping its deep roster of fighters active.

ESPN Deportes has been regularly utilized in recent months, particularly for bouts that have taken place in Latin America. Top Rank also aired Naoya Inoue's undisputed 122lbs championship defense over Murodjon Akhmadaliev on its Facebook page.

Thursday night's junior middleweight world title fight between Mary Spencer and Mikaela Mayer has this week been upgraded to a unified championship bout.

WBA beltholder Mary Spencer (10-2, 6 KOs) will defend her strap, while the WBC and WBO titles recently vacated by the retiring Cecilia Braekhus will also be on the line in their Montreal Casino main event.

Spencer-Mayer headlines a card featuring an all-Quebec super middleweight matchup between Ring ambassador Wilkens Mathieu (14-0, 10 KOs) and Shakeel Phinn (27-3-2, 17 KOs), with select undercard bouts streamed on Top Rank Classics at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

BS were first with the news after receiving confirmation from Eye of the Tiger Management, the event's promoter.

Former long-reigning welterweight champion Braekhus (39-2-1, 9 KOs), who finished her career as a two-division titleholder having outpointed Ema Kozin on October 4, said farewell on a historic stint in the paid ranks after turning pro in 2007.

Spencer, a 2012 Olympian, will make the second defence of her WBA strap after being upgraded to full champion following a 10-round points win over Naomi Mannes 13 months ago.

IBF beltholder Oshae Jones (9-0, 3 KOs) has won and since defended her 154-pound title with split decision victories over Femke Hermans and Elia Carranza over the past year, though there's no update on a return timeline for the 27-year-old.

Mayer represented the U.S. during the subsequent Olympic cycle and enters their contest as the current WBO welterweight champion, having failed to secure a full agreement for an undisputed matchup with Wales' Lauren Price this summer.

Mayer posted on her social media channels she was travelling to Canada on Monday, with this news breaking overnight.

Arthur Biyarslanov wants statement win against Sergey Lipinets

Junior welterweight Arthur Biyarslanov is hungry for a title shot and hopes facing a former beltholder will move him closer to that dream.

Biyarslanov faces Sergey Lipinets in a 10-round bout on Thursday at the Casino de Montreal in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The main event is a junior middleweight title bout between Mary Spencer and Mikaela Mayer.

Biyarslanov is currently ranked No. 7 by the WBC and No. 9 by the IBF. The unrated Lipinets held the IBF junior welterweight title from November 2017 until March 2018. Biyarslanov, 19-0 (16 KOs), views this fight as forward progress to facing the best in the world.

“I want to get my name out there,” Biyarslanov told BS. “Every fight is one step closer. I know I can become a world champion. In my weight division, I have seen these guys fight, and I know I can beat them. I believe in myself. I just need the opportunity.”

Biyarslanov has had a long journey to this point. The 30-year-old turned professional in late 2018 but saw the COVID-19 pandemic slow him down. Biyarslanov fought four times in 2019 but only twice apiece in 2020 and 2021. Now he has the record to compete for a title, but he finds himself in limbo when it comes to facing the biggest names and top champions

“ a big risk, less reward for them,” Biyarslanov said. “I guess I don’t have the name like they do. Seeing me, a southpaw with heavy hands and a good record, I am sure anyone in the top 10 of the rankings will try to avoid me.”

Biyarslanov sees one exception: If future opponents are getting paid well, he believes the fights can happen. Another avenue is to continue his path up the rankings, taking a traditional developmental route to ensure a chance at holding a belt.

Biyarslanov trains with Samuel Decarie. The two have worked together for roughly four years. Decarie is best known for leading junior lightweight Leila Beaudoin to a fight with Alycia Baumgardner, which will take place on November 14.

“He is open-minded. He is easy to work with, and he is very excited about training,” Biyarslanov said. “He wants to make you better, and he is always planning.

Lipinets, 18-4-1 (13 KOs), is a Kazakh fighter who lives in Woodland Hills, California. The 36-year-old enters the contest after being stopped by British contender Adam Azim in February.

“He is coming off a loss, and I am sure he is hungry to get back in the ratings,” Biyarslanov said. “He is a strong puncher, just like me, and in boxing, one punch can change the fight.

“I want to make a statement,” he said. “Lipinets is a perfect opponent for me to do that.”

Defending WBA titleholder Spencer, 10-2 (6 KOs), came in at 152.8lbs, while Mayer, 21-2 (5 KOs), was even lighter at 151lbs.

In the co-featured bout, Wilkens Mathieu weighed 167.6lbs while Shakeel Phinn weighed 166.9lbs

Mikaela Mayer dominated Mary Spencer to become unified super-welterweight champion and claim WBA, WBC and WBO titles; Mayer outworked Spencer over 10 rounds and now eyes undisputed status at 154 pounds or a return to 147 to challenge Lauren Price

Mikaela Mayer became unified super-welterweight champion with a dominant unanimous-decision victory over WBA champion Mary Spencer in Montreal to claim the vacant WBC and WBO belts.

Former two-division champion Mayer (22-2) applied relentless pressure from the opening bell to overwhelm Spencer (10-3), who struggled to counter despite her size advantage as one judge scored it 100-90 and the other two had it 98-92 for Mayer.

With the IBF title held by Oshae Jones, Mayer could now pursue undisputed status at 154 pounds or return to welterweight to challenge three-belt champion Lauren Price.

"I think the most important thing is that I have options," Mayer said.

"I cleared my head after a tough two years. I'd love to do both - go down to 147 to become undisputed and defend at 154. I think I'm a natural 147-pounder."

After starting her career 17-0 and unifying the super-featherweight division, Mayer lost a close decision to Alycia Baumgardner in 2022.

She rebounded with two lightweight wins in 2023, then fell short against Natasha Jonas in her first welterweight title bid.

Mayer later captured the WBO welterweight title by defeating Sandy Ryan in 2024 and defended it successfully in their March 2025 rematch.

Moving up again, Mayer was expected to struggle with the larger Spencer but instead imposed her will, working behind a sharp jab and constant forward motion.

Spencer, 40, had her best moment in the fifth round with a clean uppercut, but Mayer's chin held firm.

Mikaela Mayer targeting undisputed 147lbs title showdown with Lauren Price

After stepping up in weight for the second straight year, Mikaela Mayer is next eyeing a step down the scales.

Moments after winning three of the four major junior-middleweight titles on Thursday night with a unanimous decision over Mary Spencer in Montreal, Mayer says her vision is to return to welterweight for an undisputed showdown with Lauren Price – the Welsh southpaw who holds three of the four major belts at welterweight. Mayer, who entered the fight with the WBO welterweight title, says she might try to reign over two different weight classes at the same time, if allowed.

“I’ve never been in this position, and for a minute I thought I was gonna have to choose,” said Mayer, 22-2 (5 KOs). “But I may not have to do that. They might give me an opportunity to go down, fight Lauren Price for undisputed and then come back and defend one of the three belts.”

“I'm not the type of fighter who hops around and takes forever to do things. I'll go down, fight Lauren Price and come right back up in six months and defend these belts. That's the kind of fighter I am.”

The 35-year-old Mayer of Woodland Hills, California says that a deal had been reached between her team, led by promoter Top Rank, and Price’s promoter BOXXER, only for the deal to fall by the wayside. Since their original deal fell through, both Top Rank and BOXXER lost their respective TV deals with ESPN and Sky Sports, making revisiting the deal all the more difficult.

“We had the fight locked in,” she said. “It was set for July in Vegas, and I think what happened was BOXXER negotiated that deal for Lauren Price without her being involved in it, and when they did tell her the deal we made, which was completely made, money was negotiated and everything, she said, ‘Hell no, I'm not doing that’. I guess that's her prerogative.

“That was the last date we would have had with those two networks on board so we didn’t have money. The money wasn’t there to give us the money that we deserved, so we had to put it on hold. And hopefully now they’re settled with their network deal. Hopefully Top Rank will have theirs solidified soon, and we can pull together the money and get what we deserve for that fight.”

Price, 9-0 (2 KOs), is coming off her biggest win to date – a unanimous decision over Natasha Jonas in March to unify three of the major titles at 147lbs.

Mayer, who will be leaving Montreal with the WBO, WBC and WBA titles at 154lbs, would have another path to follow to become an undisputed champion, if she were to face off with her fellow US Olympian Oshae Jones, who holds the IBF junior-middleweight title. Mayer says that she considers the Toledo, Ohio native to be one of her best friends, but wouldn’t close the door on making that fight if the opportunity presented itself.

“Me and Oshae have talked about it before,” said Mayer. “We said, you might as well make money with your friends versus your enemies. So if we have to pull together and fight one day, we’re both businesswomen, so we’ll make it happen.

“I want to go down and go undisputed against Lauren Price – that’s a big fight. I think I’d be leaving a lot of money on the table not doing that right away. So we’ll go see but I’ll leave that to my team to kind of negotiate.”

Mayer also says she wouldn’t completely close the door on moving up even further in weight, despite not having to cut any weight to weigh in at 151lbs on Wednesday, and making the 147lbs limit with similar ease.

“This is as high as I need to go,” said Mayer. “I didn’t cut for this fight at all. I don’t even cut for 147, but I’m just kind of crazy like that. If there was an opportunity at 160 that made sense, I wouldn’t necessarily say no to that. But I think right now, I have plenty of options. Right now I have to decide where I want to go undisputed first. Options are obviously a blessing.”

Mikaela Mayer vacates WBO 154lbs title but is keeping options open for next fight

Mikaela Mayer has not abandoned her goal of becoming undisputed champion.

However, she was forced to let go of one belt as she mulls all next step options. WBO officials confirmed that Mayer – who simultaneously held the sanctioning body’s title at both 147lbs and 154lbs – has parted ways with the junior middleweight belt.

The decision was made on Tuesday, less than three months after Mayer, 22-2 (5 KOs) defeated Mary Spencer to win the WBA, WBC and WBO 154lbs titles last October 29 in Montreal, Canada.

“Be advised that Mikaela Mayer has formally relinquished the WBO Junior Middleweight Championship,” WBO president Gustavo Olivieri informed Boxing Scene and other media outlets. “[Mayer] will retain her WBO Welterweight World Title as she pursues undisputed status at 147 pounds.

“All the best to Team Mayer.”

An update on her WBC and WBA 154lbs titles were not yet made available as this goes to publication. WBO rules do not permit titlists to hold belts at multiple weights, which left Mayer with a difficult choice.

Mayer has been adamant about wanting to fully unify the welterweight division, which is a one-fight effort. Lauren Price, 9-0 (2 KOs), is the recognized lineal, WBA, WBC and IBF champ at the weight, and due to defend her unified crown in March, according to promoter Ben Shalom.

Prior to Tuesday’s decision, Mayer was theoretically one fight away from undisputed status at 154lbs as well.

Oshae Jones, 9-0 (3 KOs), the 2020 Olympic bronze medalist for the U.S., currently holds the IBF belt. Mayer and Jones have been friends – or at least friendly – since their respective amateur careers, though would have to put that aside for business should the right opportunity arise as it relates to multi-belt glory.

Mayer was recognized as 2025 Fighter of the Year by several outlets, and was BS’s top runner-up to Elif Nur Turhan.

The 2016 U.S. Olympian scored a repeat win over Sandy Ryan, whom she dethroned to claim the WBO 147lbs title in September 2024 but won in more dominant fashion in their March 29 rematch in Las Vegas. She then traveled north of the border to upend Spencer for a three-belt victory in becoming a three-division titlist.

Mayer previously held the IBF and WBO titles at 130lbs before she suffered a disputed points loss to Alycia Baumgardner in their October 2022 unification bout. She also fell just short to Natasha Jonas in their January 2024 scorcher before rattling off three straight wins and adding four major titles to her collection in the process.
