Terence Crawford ticketed, held at gunpoint by Omaha police hours after his parade
Hours after being hailed by his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, in a parade that drew a reported 100,000-plus supporters, newly crowned undisputed super-middleweight champion Terence Crawford was ticketed for driving recklessly and questioned by police during the traffic stop for legally carrying firearms in the vehicle.
Omaha Mayor John W. Ewing and Police Chief Todd Schmaderer reviewed the early morning Sunday incident and launched a review that will include an internal affairs investigation, police said in a prepared statement.
Crawford, who turned 38 Sunday, rode through city streets Saturday during the parade and spoke movingly to his mother and grandmother during remarks on stage during the event.
Staged two weeks after his superb showing in a unanimous decision victory over Mexico’s Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas to become a three-time undisputed champion and five-division titlist, Crawford’s parade was a celebration of the loyal Nebraskan who even wore Nerbraska’s famed red “N” in his mouthpiece on fight night.
According to the police statement, officers working near downtown Omaha observed “a vehicle driving recklessly,” prompting the traffic stop shortly before 1:30 a.m. Central time.
“While speaking with the driver [Crawford], an officer observed a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard. For safety, all four occupants were ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint,” police said.
“One passenger, a member of Crawford’s security team, was also found to be carrying a legal firearm. Police have confirmed that all occupants are legally permitted to carry firearms.”
Crawford requested a police supervisor and lieutenant to respond to the scene, police said.
Crawford’s spokeswoman told BS the boxing champion “has no comment at this time.”
In a statement on Facebook, Mayor Ewing said he spoke to Crawford.
“I acknowledge the seriousness of what occurred and how trust between law enforcement and our community is important and shows the need to be continuously vigilant about building relationships,” Ewing wrote.
“My heart dropped in learning of this end to an otherwise wonderful day and evening celebrating our city’s world boxing champion. … [It] was a showing of joy and pride. Omaha needs to remember this important day as a good one while we seek answers to how it ended.
“We must ensure that every resident, no matter who they are, feels safe and respected in Omaha.”

According to the statement, police stopped a vehicle they said was driving recklessly shortly before 1:30 a.m. While speaking with the driver, the statement said, an officer saw a firearm on the driver's side floorboard. Four people in the car were ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint.
The driver later was identified as Crawford, who was cited for reckless driving. One passenger, a member of Crawford's security team, also was found to be carrying a legal firearm. Police said all occupants are legally permitted to carry firearms.
The statement said a police supervisor and lieutenant responded to the scene at Crawford's request.

Passengers in Terence Crawford's vehicle allege rights violated
The head of security for world boxing champion Terence Crawford and two other people filed a federal lawsuit Monday against Omaha's police chief and more than a dozen officers for their conduct during a September traffic stop.
Crawford, an Omaha native, was stopped early Sept. 28 on suspicion of reckless driving hours after a parade was held in downtown Omaha to celebrate his victory over Canelo Alvarez two weeks earlier. Police ordered Crawford, bodyguard Qasim Shabazz and two other passengers out of the vehicle at gunpoint.
Crawford, who was ticketed and released, is not a plaintiff in the lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Nebraska. A request for comment was left with the city attorney's office.
Shabazz and the other vehicle occupants, George Williams and Nadia Metoyer, are seeking monetary damages.
According to Shabazz and a police report, Shabazz told an officer who approached the vehicle that he was carrying a legal firearm, as his security job requires. Three seconds after Shabazz's disclosure, officers on the driver's side and passenger side ordered everybody out of the vehicle at gunpoint, the lawsuit said.
Police Chief Todd Schmaderer, in a statement hours after the incident, said Crawford, who was leaning over the car's console, told the passenger side officer he also had a legal firearm, but the officer at the driver's side window didn't hear that exchange.
That is when the officer on the driver's side spotted a gun belonging to Crawford on the floorboard and, along with the other officer, drew weapons. All four people exited the vehicle without incident. The lawsuit alleges the four were handcuffed for 30 minutes. Schmaderer has said they were handcuffed for 10 minutes.
Police confirmed all occupants of the vehicle were legally permitted to carry firearms.
The lawsuit alleges the officers violated the constitutional rights of Shabazz, Williams and Metoyer for drawing and pointing their weapons at them after Shabazz's legal disclosure of his firearm. Schmaderer said the officers followed department policy. The lawsuit said the policy violates the Fourth Amendment's prohibition against excessive force.
The plaintiffs also allege, among other things, that police have a custom of making discriminatory traffic stops against Black people and are not adequately trained on constitutional limitations governing use of force during encounters with citizens lawfully carrying firearms.
The lawsuit asks for damages for physical, emotional, psychological and dignitary injuries suffered as a direct result of the officers' conduct.
