The fight was supposed to be the part of Don King's card, headlined by Chris Byrd and Andrew Golota, in April 2004 at Madison Square Garden, with Rivera's WBA "Regular" title being on the line.
However, Mayorga came in 6lbs (!) over the limit. Rivera had a choice whether to proceed with the bout or not. He chose not to fight an overweight Mayorga and, as a result, didn't participate in the show.
Mayorga, on his part, was given a late substitute in Eric Mitchell, whom he defeated by UD 10.
