Melvin Jerusalem vs. Siyakholwa Kuse - October 29, 2025

Melvin Jerusalem set for WBC 105lbs title defense in October

Melvin Jerusalem will return home for his next title defense.

It won’t be the title unification he initially sought, or even a clash with a former beltholder. Instead, the reigning WBC strawweight titlist from the Philippines will face first-time title challenger Siyakholwa Kuse. Their bout will take place on a soon to be scheduled date in October in Manila.

Jerusalem, 24-3 (12 KOs), was due to face the former IBF title claimant Daniel Valladares – a solid match-up in the absence of a rematch with the lineal, WBA and WBO champ Oscar Collazo.

However, visa issues prevented Valladares, 31-4-1 (19 KOs), from being able to commit.

Instead, Jerusalem will turn his attention to South Africa’s Kuse, 9-2-1 (4 KOs), who – in addition to his first title bid – will fight on the road for the first time as a pro.

Kuse is riding a six-fight winning streak. The 22 year old from Eastern Cape is coming off a 10-round, unanimous decision over veteran divisional gatekeeper Samuel Salva on May 31 in Kempton Park. Jerusalem will fight in his home country for the first time in 2025.

The two-time strawweight titlist has spent four of his past six bouts on the road. His WBO title reign began with a second-round knockout of Masataka Taniguchi in Osaka, Japan in January 2023. He then lost the belt to Collazo via stoppage after seven rounds in their meeting that May in Indio, California.

Four wins have followed, with Jerusalem keen to avenge that loss. He’s won twice in each of the Philippines and in Japan, where both times he fought Yudai Shigeoka. He lifted the WBC belt in their thrilling first meeting in March in Nagoya, then returned to the region – Tokoname, more specifically – to repeat the feat exactly 52 weeks later. In between came a 12-round, shutout victory over unbeaten mandatory challenger Luis Castillo in September in Mandaluyong City, Philippines.

Those hoping to see Collazo-Jerusalem II will be encouraged that the world’s top two strawweights remain on a similar timeline. Collazo, 12-0 (9 KOs), will defend his unified championship against Jayson Vayson – Jerusalem’s countryman – on September 20 in Indio, California.

Melvin Jerusalem-Siyakholwa Kuse to headline Manny Pacquiao’s ‘Thrilla in Manila 2’

Melvin Jerusalem will defend his WBC strawweight title against Siyakholwa Kuse on a bill staged by Manny Pacquiao Promotions, in partnership with IBA Pro, at the historic Araneta Coliseum on October 29 in Metro Manila, Philippines. The event, also set to feature Nico Ali Walsh in a six-rounder, will be entitled ‘Thrilla in Manila 2’ to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Muhammad Ali’s titanic rubber match with Joe Frazier.

The 31-year-old Jerusalem, 24-3 (12 KOs), will make the third defense of the title he won last year when he outpointed Yudai Shigeoka, a result he repeated in March. Another points success, over Luis Castillo, was sandwiched between for Philippines’ Jerusalem, who is a former WBO beltholder at 105lbs. The 22-year-old Kuse, from South Africa, has amassed a 9-2-1 (4 KOs) record and his challenge to Jerusalem was first reported by BS in August.

Up at middleweight, unbeaten Filipino Eumir Marcial, 6-0 (4 KOs), was set to scrap Venezuela’s Eddy Colmenares, 11-2 (11 KOs), in a 10-rounder for the WBC international strap but will now compete over six.

At junior featherweight, Las Vegas-based Carl Martin, a southpaw, returns to his native Philippines with high hopes to extend his 26-0 (20 KOs) unbeaten record against Thailand’s Aran Dipaen, 21-4 (18 KOs).

Also on the bill is former two-weight beltholder Marlon Tapales who has won three in a row since losing in 10 rounds to Naoya Inoue at the end of 2023. Tapales, 40-4 (21 KOs), fights Venezuela’s Fernando Toro in a 10-rounder.

In a catchy quote on the press release, Pacquiao states: “The Thrilla in Manila lit a fire in my heart as a kid, pushing me to dream big. Bringing Thrilla in Manila 2 to Manila with IBA Pro is my way of passing that fire to the next generation. On October 29, we’re making history again, and the world will feel the heat of Filipino pride.”

Jerusalem gets the UD, never scored it but it looked a close one, Kuse came to fight and there was some good exchanges, looked like the ref missed a couple of knockdowns, Jerusalem walked Kuse on to a left hook and dropped him in the 3rd but ref never called it, same in the 10th when Kuse put Jerusalem down with a straight left, again ref ruled no knockdown, there was plenty leather thrown by both men, competitive fight, no complaints, Jerusalem looks ready to lose though

Just catching up with Taduran's IBF strawweight title defence against Christian Balunan from last week, didn't see a thread on it, I know Taduran won a UD, his first fight since the Shigeoka rematch, Shigeoka still in a bad way last I heard

Melvin Jerusalem retains WBC 105lbs title against Siyakholwa Kuse

Melvin Jerusalem made the third defence of his WBC strawweight title when he earned a unanimous decision over Siyakholwa Kuse on The Thrilla in Manila II promotion staged on the golden anniversary of Ali-Frazier III.

At Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines, the titlist was awarded for his aggression by earning scores of 115-113, 116-112 and 116-112.

Kuse, 22, was – following a competitive start – dropped in the third round when off-balance and caught by Jerusalem’s left hand, but was ruled by the referee Cesar Castanon Varela to have slipped.

The 31-year-old Jerusalem regardless responded by thereafter attempting to seek a stoppage, and yet found his South African challenger not only willing to attempt to match him physically, but effective on the inside. The scores were perhaps a little too wide in Jerusalem’s favour.

The Filipino is expected to pursue a rematch with the WBA and WBO champion Oscar Collazo, or an alternative unification contest with the IBF titlist Pedro Taduran, also of the Philippines.

The middleweight grandson of the great Muhammad Ali, Nico Ali Walsh, had by then drawn over eight rounds with Thailand’s Kittisak Klinson. The scores were 76-76, 76-76 and 77-75 in Klinson’s favour.

“First off I want to thank God for this opportunity,” Ali Walsh said, post-fight. “Thank you to everyone for coming out. The Filipino fans are amazing. Thank you to my opponent, to [IBA president] Umar Kremlev and Manny Pacquiao for the opportunity.

“I wouldn’t be here if not for God and my grandfather, so I want to thank my grandfather for putting on an amazing show 50 years ago in this arena. I don’t agree with the decision, but I know you all saw the real victor.”

The 10-round middleweight contest between Eumir Marcial and Eddy Colmenares concluded as a majority decision in favour of Marcial, despite his being knocked down in the third round.

The WBC’s open-scoring system regardless showed Marcial narrowly leading entering the final rounds, but he was knocked down again with just 20 seconds remaining before recovering, surviving, and being awarded scores of 95-93, 95-93 and 94-94.

There was also a unanimous decision, over 10 rounds, for the featherweight Carl Jammes Martin over Aran Dipaen. The judges scored 98-90, 97-92 and 98-91 in his favour.

Arvin Magramo earned a split decision, at junior flyweight, over Berland Robles. Robles had a point deducted in the final round, contributing to the scores of 95-94, 94-95 and 96-93 that favoured Magramo.

At featherweight, the former junior-featherweight titlist Marlon Tapales stopped Fernando Toro two minutes and 31 seconds into the sixth round. Toro was also knocked down in the sixth.

Eman Bacosa and Ronerick Ballesteros won their respective lightweight contests, against Nico Salado and Speedy Boy Acope, via unanimous decision and stoppage. Bacosa earned scores of 58-55, 58-55 and 60-53, having also knocked Salado down in the fourth. Ballesteros was awarded victory 50 seconds into the fifth round; he also recorded knockdowns in the second and fifth.

In the two IBA Pro contests, respectively at middleweight and heavyweight, Vadim Tukov and Chris Thompson earned eight-round decisions over Sena Agbeko and Georgiy Yunovidov.
