Rafael Espinoza-Arnold Khegai WBO title fight set for Nov. 15 in Mexico

Rafael Espinoza is set for a long overdue title fight in his home country.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that the unbeaten WBO featherweight titlist will defend his crown against Arnold Khegai atop a November 15 show in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The soon-to-be-scheduled 12-round bout will headline a Top Rank-heavy card - promoted by Zanfer Boxing - in what will mark Espinoza’s first fight in Mexico since July 2023 predating his current title reign.

ESPN Knockout’s Salvador “Chava” Rodriguez was the first to report Ukraine’s Khegai as the challenger for the event. The scoop confirmed a previous Boxing Scene report on the Mexico card in the works.

Guadalajara’s Espinoza, 27-0 (23 KOs) will attempt the fourth defense of the title he claimed from Robeisy Ramirez in December 2023. Their thriller saw both fighters hit the canvas but Espinoza’s timely 12th round knockdown securing a majority decision victory in Pembroke Pines, Florida.

Their rematch was competitive until it wasn’t, as Cuba’s Ramirez – now based in Las Vegas – was forced to quit seconds into the 6th round last December 7 in Phoenix, Arizona.

The repeat win over Ramirez was one of three successful defenses for the 6ft, 1ins Espinoza – all three of which have come inside the distance. His most recent win came in a seventh-round knockout of Texas’s Edward Vazquez on the May 4 Naoya Inoue-Ramon Cardenas ESPN show from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Khegai will enter his first major title fight and just his second scheduled 12-round contest.

The Los Angeles-based boxer originally from Odessa, Ukraine signed with Top Rank with the intention to challenge for this very title. He even turned down a path that would have led to a shot at the IBF 126lbs belt to instead go the WBO route.

The journey included a pothole, as Khegai dropped a ten-round, split decision to multi-time title challenger Joet Gonzalez on a March 8 ProBox TV show from Long Beach, California. He rebounded with an eight-round, unanimous decision victory over former titleholder Liborio Solis on September 12 in Berlin, Germany.

All told, Khegai has won seven of his last eight starts since a 12-round, unanimous decision defeat to Stephen Fulton in a January 2020 title eliminator between unbeaten contenders.

As previously reported by Boxing Scene, the November 15 show will also include:

- Lindolfo Delgado vs. Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela in a IBF 140lbs title eliminator, with the winner will become the mandatory challenger to current titleholder Richardson Hitchins;

- Separate bouts featuring fast-rising 140lbs prospect Emiliano Vargas, 15-0 (13KOs) and unbeaten heavyweight Richard Torrez, 13-0 (11 KOs), a 2020 Olympic silver medalist for the U.S.

U.S. platform rights were not yet made available as this goes to publication. Top Rank remains in search of a network and/or streaming deal after their previous deal with ESPN - which dated back to 2017 - end earlier this summer.

Sources: Rafael Espinoza slated to defend featherweight title vs. Arnold Khegai in Mexico

Rafael Espinoza is slated to defend his WBO featherweight title vs. Arnold Khegai on Nov. 15 in Mexico, sources tell The Ring.

The Ring reported that Espinoza would return on this date, but the opponent hadn't been finalized.

Espinoza is The Ring’s No. 1 boxer at 126 pounds. The bout will be his fourth title defense and first title fight in his native Mexico. Espinoza last fought in Mexico in July 2023, one fight before he won the title over Robeisy Ramirez in The Ring’s 2023 Upset of the Year.

Espinoza (27-0, 23 KOs) defeated Ramirez a second time the following year. The 31-year-old is coming off a seventh-round TKO victory over Edward Vazquez in May.

“El Divino” possesses dizzying height for his weight class at 6-foot-1. Ukraine’s Khegai (23-2-1, 14 KOs) will concede eight inches at 5-5. The 33-year-old will be fighting for his first world title.

Khegai dropped a split decision to Joet Gonzalez in March, the second defeat of his career (the other came against Stephen Fulton in 2020.) He returned with a stay-busy win over Liborio Solis earlier this month.

Richard Torrez Jr., Emiliano Vargas added to Espinoza-Khegai card Nov. 15

Rafael Espinoza will defend his WBO featherweight title against Arnold Khegai on November 15 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

The event is co-promoted by Zanfer and Top Rank, and the show will be distributed across ESPN Deportes, ESPN Knockout, and TV Azteca.

Some of the other key fights for the event have already been set.

The Ring has learned that heavyweight contender Richard Torrez (13-0, 11 KOs) will take on Tomas Salek (23-7, 14 KOs), while fast-rising junior welterweight prospect Emiliano Vargas (15-0, 13 KOs) will face Jonathan Montrel (19-3, 13 KOs).

Torrez, a 26-year-old southpaw and 2020 Olympic silver medalist for the United States, last fought in April and scored a 10-round unanimous decision win against Guido Vianello. The win has already aged well, as Vianello stopped the previously unbeaten Alexis Barriere in five rounds over the weekend.

The 21-year-old Vargas hasn’t fought since his first-round knockout of Alexander Espinoza in May. The son of Fernando Vargas has fought three times this year and stopped each opponent in a total of five rounds of work.

Also set to be featured on the card are Mexican contenders Jorge Ascanio (14-1-1, 9 KOs) and Jonathan Fierro (22-1, 17 KOs) against opponents still to be determined.

Additionally, as reported by The Ring last month, an IBF 140-pound title eliminator between Lindolfo Delgado (23-0, 16 KOs) and Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela (31-4-1, 17 KOs) will also be featured on the card.

Espinoza vs Khegai and Nasukawa vs Inoue to stream on Top Rank Classics

Top Rank’s lack of a broadcast partner won’t stop you from catching their upcoming events in Mexico and Japan

Top Rank, still on the hunt for a broadcast partner, announced on Twitter that its next two shows will air on their Top Rank Classics streaming service. That platform, which you can access for free via various services, hosted Mikaela Mayer’s win over Mary Spencer this past Saturday.

The first of the two sees Rafael “Divino” Espinoza defend his WBO featherweight title against Arnold Khegai on November 15th in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The card also features Lindolfo Delgado’s IBF final eliminator against Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela and a couple bouts of can-crushing courtesy of Richard Torrez Jr and Emiliano Vargas.

In the second, airing bright and early at 3:00 AM Eastern on Monday, November 24th, Tenshin Nasukawa battles Takuma Inoue for the vacant WBC bantamweight title in Tokyo. This one’s worth kicking off your work week with severe sleep deprivation; in addition to the main event, you’ll get to see featherweight knockout machine Mikito Nakano take on Ra’eese Aleem in a final eliminator and blue-chip prospect Tomoya Tsuboi attempt to take out Carlos Cuadras in just his third pro fight.

Love me some Espinoza, Khagai only lost on points to Fulton and Joet Gonzalez, not exactly big punchers but interesting to see if Espinoza can get him out of there

WBO featherweight king Rafael “El Divino” Espinoza is ready to defend his home turf. The 6-foot-1 Guadalajara, Mexico native — and tallest featherweight champion in boxing history — will risk his against Ukrainian contender Arnold Khegai (pictured) this Saturday, Nov. 15th in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Espinoza (27-0, 23 KOs) captured the championship in December 2023 with a majority decision over two-time Olympic gold medalist Robeisy Ramirez. Since then, he has made three successful defenses, including a sixth-round TKO over Ramirez in their December 2024 rematch. He bested former champion Liborio Solis via eight-round decision in September. The co-feature will showcase unbeaten Mexican Olympian Lindolfo Delgado (23-0, 16 KOs) against countryman Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela (31-4-1, 17 KOs) in an IBF junior welterweight title eliminator.

Mexican-American heavyweight Richard Torrez Jr. (13-0, 11 KOs) meets Czech veteran Tomas Salek (23-7, 14 KOs) in a ten-rounder, while rising junior welterweight Emiliano Vargas (15-0, 13 KOs) takes on Jonathan Montrel (19-3, 13 KOs) in a ten-round feature that will take place just before the main event. This is what the fighters had to say at Thursday's press conference:

Rafael Espinoza

"I’m pleased to be fighting again in Mexico and coming back here as a world champion."

"I know what it’s like to fight for a world title. When you fight for a world title, you come with everything and more. So, I know he’s going to come with everything. I expect that from him, and I trained for that."

"For the fans out there, I want you to know that you cannot miss this fight. I'm going to continue working hard and striving to get better with each fight."

"I’m able to continue making this weight because I’m used to the process. And I respect it as well. I know the responsibilities that come with being a world champion."

Arnold Khegai

"I’m very happy because this is the biggest fight of my career so far. I’ve been waiting forever for this kind of fight, and Saturday will be a defining moment in my career."

"The fact that I’m in Mexico doesn’t matter to me. It doesn’t matter that I’m in enemy territory. There will only be two fighters in the ring."

My head trainer, Abel Khachatryan, could not be here due to visa issues. However, Marvin Somodio will be assisting, as well as Charlie Edwards, who has been helping me in camp."

"Everything went well in camp. We made sure to cover all bases. Charlie was there to help with speed, but we also have others who can help with height and other aspects. We made sure to cover everything."

Lindolfo Delgado

"I feel happy to be fighting in Mexico again. It’s been a long time since I fought here, so it feels good to be back. People have been asking me for a long time when I am going to fight in Mexico. Not many people can go to the United States to see me. Now that it’s happening, I’m very excited. And San Luis Potosí is very close to Linares, Nuevo Leon, which is where I’m from."

"Valenzuela is a fighter with a lot of experience, and he’s been in a lot of good fights."

"I’ve been waiting for a world title shot for a long time, and we’re just one step away. So, I hope it happens next."

Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela

"I know it’s going to be a great fight. Every time there are two Mexicans, it’s guaranteed to be a war."

"I’ve been on big stages and have had a lot of great experiences, so I’m ready for whatever this fight brings."

Richard Torrez Jr.

"I'm a proud Mexican-American, and I'm going to show that 'Mexican Style' translates to the heavyweight division. This is my first time fighting in Mexico. I've been here once or twice before, but I'm excited to come here and show everyone what I'm about."

"The win over Guido Vianello gave me a newfound confidence. I'm currently ranked No. 4 by the IBF. That gives me the confidence and the drive to move forward and prove to everyone back home watching that their cheers aren't in vain."

"My opponent is a veteran. He's been here before. I'm excited to show what I have to offer. I've trained really hard. I haven't fought since April. It's been my biggest layoff as a pro, and I'm pumped to get back into the ring. I'm eager, and come Saturday night, you're going to see a lot of punches thrown."

Emiliano Vargas

"I had the opportunity to come down here and have my training camp in Mexico City. The elevation brought a whole new element to my training. My opponent is going to drown in this elevation. We checked off every box and got out of our comfort zone by getting down here early. It's going to show on Saturday night."

"I feel a lot of love in Mexico. Even while walking the streets of Mexico City, people were stopping us and taking photos. It's humbling. I am happy to represent my roots."

"We'll see what presents itself on Saturday during the fight and go from there."

RAFAEL ESPINOZA READY FOR ARNOLD KHEGAI TO ‘COME WITH EVERYTHING’

For the first time in over two years, Rafael Espinoza will step back into the squared circle in his home country of Mexico.

This time, he returns as a world champion to defend his WBO featherweight title against Arnold Khegai at Arena Potosi in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, on Saturday. Thr fight will be streamed on the Top Rank Classics FAST channel in the U.S. beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Espinoza knows what it’s like to march into enemy territory to fight for a world title, and given that experience, he’s ready for Khegai to bring everything he has in his first attempt at winning a world title.

"I know what it’s like to fight for a world title,” Espinoza said at the final press conference on Thursday. “When you fight for a world title, you come with everything and more. So, I know he’s going to come with everything. I expect that from him, and I trained for that."

Espinoza (27-0, 23 KOs) of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, will be entering his fourth world title defense. The towering 6-foot-1 champion won the world title in an upset majority decision victory over then-champion and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist for Cuba, Robeisy Ramirez, in December 2023. Since becoming champion, Espinoza, 31, has notched three title defenses, all of which he has won by stoppage inside seven rounds, including a sixth-round TKO of Ramirez in their December 2024 rematch.

Khegai (23-2-1, 14 KOs) of Odesa, Ukraine, enters the clash off an eight-round unanimous decision win over Liborio Solis on September 12. The lone losses of the 33-year-old contender’s career were decision defeats to two-division champion Stephen Fulton and three-time title challenger Joet Gonzalez.

"I’m very happy because this is the biggest fight of my career so far,” Khegai said. “I’ve been waiting forever for this kind of fight, and Saturday will be a defining moment in my career."

The co-feature is an intriguing 12-round clash between undefeated Lindolfo Delgado of Linares, Nuevo León, Mexico, and Gabriel Gollaz Valenzuela of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Delgado (23-0, 16 KOs) is ranked inside the top five at 140 pounds by the IBF, WBO and WBC and is coming off a majority decision victory in a 10-round fight over Elvis Rodriguez. Valenzuela (31-4-1, 17 KOs) rebounded from his eighth-round stoppage defeat to current WBC junior welterweight champion Subriel Matias on March 1 to win a 10-round unanimous decision over Manuel Medina Barrera on May 30 in Guadalajara.

Two of Top Rank's top prospects will also return to the ring on the undercard. Undefeated heavyweight prospect Richard Torrez Jr. takes on Tomas Salek (23-7, 14 KOs). Torrez (13-0, 11 KOs) is ranked No. 4 by the IBF and No. 11 by the WBC and WBO and enters the bout off a unanimous decision win over Guido Vianello on April 5. One of boxing’s best prospects, Emiliano Vargas (15-0, 13 KOs), will fight in his first scheduled 10-round bout against Jonathan Montrel (19-3, 13 KOs).

Vargas, 21, has stopped his last six opponents and is coming off a first-round knockout of Alexander Espinoza on July 26.

Julian Montalvo won in the 1st. This is a 17 year old kid from Vegas who big things are expected of. He's now 5(4)-0, a lanky Super-feather.

There's a few videos on Youtube of him doing day to day stuff. Just a goofy kid who happens to be good at boxing.

Khegai took murderous punishment-unreal toughness. Espinoza needs to tighten his defense. If The Monster were in with him tonight, Espinoza would have lost.

Espinoza vs Khegai is a great matchup, but it definitely feels like Espinozas fight to showcase in front of a home crowd. Espinoza’s been on a tear—three straight stoppage defenses, huge win over Robeisy, and he’s just a massive featherweight with real power.

Khegai’s tough and active, but he’s been inconsistent, and that loss to Joet Gonzalez showed his ceiling a bit. He’s gritty, but Espinoza has momentum, size, and confidence on his side.

With Delgado–Gollaz on the undercard plus Vargas and Torrez, that whole show is stacked. Should be a fun night of fights in Mexico.

Rafael Espinoza: ‘We need an undisputed champion at featherweight’

December 9 will mark two full years for Rafael Espinoza as the reigning WBO featherweight titlist.

His run has included knockout finishes in each of his four defenses. Guadalajara’s Espinoza, 28-0 (24 KOs), also achieved a goal by headlining a major title fight in his home country, following Saturday’s eleventh round stoppage of Arnold Khegai, 23-3-1 (14 KOs), in San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

As he enters year three as an unbeaten major titleholder, Espinoza is determined to fulfill another long-term goal.

“We need an undisputed champion at featherweight,” Espinoza told Boxing Scene. “I don’t know why we haven’t landed any of the other champions at featherweight. That will be a priority in 2026.

“I am going to push my team to get those guys in the ring. I don’t care about the order, as long as they happen.”

It will take some work for the 6ft, 1in Espinoza to hunt down his divisional peers, as all are straddled with present day business.

Top Rank claims co-promotional ties to both Espinoza – along with Zanfer Boxing - and IBF titleholder Angelo Leo. However, an in-house matchup isn’t quite that simple to piece together, at least not next. Leo - who is co-promoted by ProBox - is set to defend against South Africa’s Lerato Dlamini on February 1 at home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

(Note: ProBox and BS are both owned by Garry Jonas)

WBA titlist Nick Ball was ordered to next face mandatory challenger and former two-division titlist Brandon Figueroa. Their November 13 deadline expired without a deal in place, or talks even progressing far, and is now likely headed to a purse bid. Whether the fight happens is another matter, though neither boxer has exactly screamed for a showdown with Espinoza.

Stephen Fulton holds the WBC title but is next due to challenge for O’Shaquie Foster’s WBC 130lbs title on December 6 at Frost Bank Arena in San Antonio, Texas. Even if he returns to 126lbs after the fight, Fulton will be required to next face interim titleholder Bruce Carrington – ironically the one fighter at featherweight who has called out Espinoza.

Carrington is promoted by Top Rank, which could potentially facilitate a unification bout if the unbeaten Brooklyn native is upgraded to full titleholder.

The division was largely stagnant for much of 2025, as most of the top players expected current undisputed 122lbs champion Naoya Inoue to move up in weight.

The unbeaten four-division champ from Yokohama, Japan put to rest those rumors, however, in confirming that he is still comfortable at junior featherweight. Furthermore, Inoue is now on a collision course with countryman and three-division titlist Junto Nakatani, which is targeted for next spring should both prevail in separate bouts on December 27 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

With that crutch removed for the other players at featherweight, Espinoza hopes his standing can represent the top prize at the weight.

“Nobody is waiting for Inoue anymore, he’s not moving up so that excuse is out,” noted Espinoza. “They very clearly don’t want to fight each other, so I’ll go chase them all. If they run too far, then I’ll make sure I’m the best possible option for the Inoue-Nakatani winner, should that person move up. But becoming undisputed champion is my main goal.”
