KEVIN BROWN VS. CLETUS SELDIN SET FOR INTERIM WBA SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE

Kevin Brown will fight Cletus Seldin for the interim WBA super lightweight title on Dec. 13 at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida, The Ring has confirmed.

The fight will be part of the WBA’s 104th convention, which is scheduled for Dec. 12-16 at the Caribe Royale.

Carlos Linares of All In 1 Deportes first reported the news on X. The Ring later confirmed the matchup with multiple sources with direct knowledge of the bout.

Brown (8-0, 3 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Juan Meza Angulo in a 10-round bout on Sept. 19. The 31-year-old Cuban was 301-19 as an amateur before turning pro in 2022. He is currently ranked No. 10 by the WBA.

Seldin (29-1, 23 KOs), who is ranked No. 7 by the WBA at 140 pounds, returned to the ring after a one-year layoff on March 16 and defeated Yeis Gabriel Solano by majority decision. Seldin, 39, boasts an 11th-round stoppage victory over former multiple-division champion Zab Judah in 2019.

Seldin, known as “The Hebrew Hammer,” hasn’t taken part in a scheduled 12-round bout since facing Judah. His last three fights were scheduled eight-rounders. This is Brown's first 12-rounder.

The WBA already has an interim beltholder in place, Alessandro Riguccini, which raises obvious questions. A WBA official told The Ring it would provide an explanation on Friday.

Riguccini (31-0, 27 KOs) last fought on July 11 and won by second-round knockout.

Gary Antuanne Russell (18-1, 17 KOs) is the WBA champion. He will make the first defense of his title against Japan’s Andy Hiraoka (24-0, 19 KOs) on the undercard of Gervonta Davis vs. Jake Paul on Nov. 14 at the Kaseya Center in Miami on Netflix.

Constantly grotesque WBA has sanctioned interim 140 title fight between Kevin Brown (8-0 vs. nobodies) & Cletus Seldin, 39, who has no notable wins unless you count stopping long-faded Zab Judah 6 years ago & fighting only 5x since vs. nobody of remote note. Disgusting. #boxing

Kevin Brown-Cletus Seldin set for December 13

For the second time in five months, the WBA will crown a new interim junior welterweight champion on December 13.

Cuba’s Kevin “Alfa” Brown will meet New Yorker Cletus Seldin for the vacant belt at Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida, as part of the sanctioning body's annual convention. The show will be promoted by Boxlab Promotions, which will stream the event over their YouTube channel.

The vacant title fight was made possible by Italy’s Alessandro Riguccini, who knocked out Jesus Correa in two rounds this past January, abdicating the title shortly after.

“This is the fight I’ve been waiting for,” said Brown, 8-0 (3 KOs), in a press release.

“Seldin is a tough, experienced warrior, but I believe my skills, my speed, and my mindset will prove I’m ready for the world stage. To fight for a world title at such a prestigious event like the WBA Convention is an honor. I plan to make a statement and show the boxing world that a new star is rising in the super lightweight division.”

Brown, a decorated amateur in Cuba, is now based in Las Vegas. He turned pro in 2022 and has never fought anyone with a losing record, though his highest profile victory to date was a unanimous decision over John Bauza 14 months ago.

Seldin, the Brooklyn native who is eight years the senior of the 31-year-old Brown, brings a record of 29-1 (23 KOs), brings an eight-fight winning streak to the ring, which includes a stoppage win in 2019 over an aging Zab Judah, plus back-to-back majority decision wins in New York over Yeis Solano and Jose Angulo.

Seldin hasn’t lost since 2017, when he stepped up against Yves Ulysse Jnr on HBO, and lost a unanimous decision.

“This is what I live for, big fights, big lights, and putting on a show,” said Seldin, who is managed by Elvis Grant. “Brown’s slick, but he hasn’t been in with someone like me. I bring pressure every second of every round, and on December 13, I’m bringing that hammer down hard. People talk about the new wave, the new generation — but I’m here to remind everyone that I’m not done. I’m hungry, and I’m coming to win.”

The rest of the card will include a junior featherweight bout between Angel Barrientes, 14-1 (9 KOs), and Nicaragua's Alex Vallecillo, 12-1 (11 KOs).

CLETUS SELDIN TESTS POSITIVE FOR TESTOSTERONE, RULED OUT OF KEVIN BROWN DUEL

Cletus Seldin is out of his scheduled interim WBA junior welterweight title bout against Kevin Brown on Saturday night at Orlando's Caribe Royale.

Seldin (29-1, 23 KOs) was pulled from the bout due to an adverse finding for testosterone. Carlos Linares was first to report the news that Seldin was out, before Dan Rafael reported the adverse finding was the reason he's no longer boxing Brown as planned.

The Ring has since also confirmed Seldin's withdrawal from the contest.

Having successfully made weight, Brown (8-0, 3 KOs) will now defend his secondary title in a 10-round bout against Amos Cowart (13-2-1, 10 KOs) in the Boxlab main event - Cowart already previously scheduled to box as part of the undercard.

This isn’t the first time Seldin (29-1, 23 KOs) has returned atypical levels of testosterone in a drug test. Seldin, 39, also failed drug tests in 2016 and 2017 for elevated levels of testosterone.

Yoenis Tellez (10-1, 7 KOs) is fighting for the first time since losing his interim WBA 154-pound title to Abass Baraou via unanimous decision in August, as he’ll face Kendo Castaneda (21-12, 9 KOs) over eight rounds.

Jasmine Artiga (14-0-1, 7 KOs) is also on the card, defending her WBA flyweight title against Stephanie Silva (10-1) over ten two-minute rounds. Silva isn't eligible to win the title, having missed weight by over four pounds at Friday's weigh-in.

Kevin Hayler Brown turns away late sub Amos Cowart to remain unbeaten

The night didn’t end with a secondary WBA title around his waist like Kevin Hayler Brown originally envisioned this business trip.

In the end, however, he was able to advance his career with yet another dominant performance.

Cuba’s Brown – now based in Las Vegas – effortlessly turned away late-substitute opponent Amos Cowart over 10 one-sided rounds. Scores were 100-90, 100-90 and 100-90 for the unbeaten Brown, 9-0 (3 KOs), in their main event Saturday evening at Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando, Florida.

The bout headlined a WBA-sponsored show as part of the sanctioning body’s 104th annual convention. Brown was originally due to face Cletus Seldin for the WBA interim 140lbs title atop the bill.

Those plans changed within the past 24 hours when Seldin was pulled from the card after he tested positive for accelerated levels of testosterone. Boxlab Promotions, Brown’s career-long-promoter, quickly secured the services of Cowart, 13-3-1 (10 KOs), who was already scheduled for an 8-round undercard bout.

Because of the last-minute change, the bout was downgraded to 10 rounds, with only Brown’s WBA regional title at stake.

That didn’t stop him from trying to prove himself as a rapidly rising contender. The 31-year-old junior welterweight has been matched aggressively since his August 2022 pro debut, with the entirety of his career taking place at Caribe Royale and against opponents with more pro experience.

The same held true on Saturday, though it was clear from the outset that Cowart – as valiant was his effort – was out of his depth. Brown was able to box early and control the distance and the pace to pile up rounds.

Towards the end of the night, Brown was more inclined to stand his ground and take more risks. He bloodied up and pounded away at Cowart in the 10th and final round but could not produce what would have been his first stoppage victory in two years – almost to the day.

Instead, it was another landside decision victory for Brown, who has now gone the 10-round distance for the sixth overall time and for his fifth straight contest.

It remains to be seen whether Brown can secure a secondary title fight for his next bout. The full version of the WBA 140lbs belt is tied up, as defending titlist Gary Antuanne Russell and mandatory challenger Andy Hiraoka await a new date for their long-ago-ordered clash.

Brown is currently the sanctioning body’s No. 7 challenger but will likely receive a promotion during the ratings portion of the WBA convention. Hiraoka is still No. 1 but Ruben Nestor Neri Munoz – the current No. 2 contender – just suffered a 12-round defeat on Friday in Dubai.

Oscar Duarte is presently No. 3, and thus first in line to face Brown should the WBA order a secondary title fight.
