He is going to be bringing pressure that Dalton hasn't seen. I believe he will get to Dalton and get him out of there. I think Dalton is completely unprepared for this. He goes through the motions in his fights. It is a case of him getting used to a steady jog but now he will be forced into an all out sprint that he is unprepared for. Matias is tried and tested at world level and will be bringing a level of heat that Dalton won't be able to deal with. I see Matias is the favourite at the bookies which is a shame. I was hoping the Dalton hype would give a good price.

Fresh Productions outbids Matchroom for Subriel Matias vs Dalton Smith

Subriel Matias will make the first defense of his WBC title in friendly territory

Puerto Rican outfit Fresh Productions pulled off an upset at today’s IBF purse bid, snatching the rights to Subriel Matias vs Dalton Smith from Matchroom by outbidding them $1.9 million to $1.71 million.

England’s Smith (18-0, 13 KOs) confronted Matias (23-2, 22 KOs) in the ring after the latter’s narrow victory over WBC super lightweight champion Alberto Puello in July, with Turki Alalshikh declaring that they’d square off on Riyadh Season’s November 22nd Benavidez vs Yarde show. That clearly didn’t pan out, giving Matias home-field advantage for the first defense of his second title reign.

That said, Liam Paro got reasonable scorecards when he toppled Matias in Manati two Junes ago, so Smith doesn’t necessarily have to stop the iron-tough Boricua if he wants a fair shake.

For this fight, the WBC's 10% winner’s bonus rule will be used, meaning $190,000 will go to the winner.

It shows that there is some confidence behind the handlers of Matias.

This will be a great win if Dalton can pull it off.

What's purse split?

Say Matias is being paid around the $1 million mark..

surely, Turki had offered him more than that?

Unless Matias' people said don't accept and we'll get a fight in PR

65:35 for Matias as the champ.

What a horrific situation for Dalton now having to go to Puerto Rico to face this monster of a fighter in his own backyard.

60:30 then as 10% goes to the winner.

So Matias guaranteed $1,140,000 unless it's lower, as we know promoters do a separate deal for their boxers sometimes.

Smith will be on $570k damn! and a win increases that to $760k.

Highest payday?

He'll be pissed, surely Turki was going to offer him slightly more.

Why is it horrific? This is how it should be if you want to be a world champion.

Suddenly got a lot tougher for Smith now. I suppose they’re right, the people behind Matias backing their man - because he’s very good and all action so maybe they can build a superstar in Puerto Rico.

We’re gonna find our just how good Dalton Smith is

I agree it's how it should be but how may times have we seen world champs having to travel abroad to someones backyard. Dalton was getting the kid gloves treatment and having everything his own way and now this. Dalton would have been expecting a cosy situation with everything that could possibly be in his favour, in his favour.

SUBRIEL MATIAS-DALTON SMITH TO TAKE PLACE JAN. 10 IN NEW YORK, VENUE TBD

Subriel Matias’ promoter is ready to test his marketability in New York.

The Ring has confirmed a plan to bring Matias’ mandated WBC 140-pound title defense against England’s Dalton Smith there January 10. Smith has mentioned that date and New York in recent days on social media.

Fresh Productions, which promotes Puerto Rico’s Matias, won a purse bid last month to secure the rights to the fight with a bid of $1,900,000. It wasn’t clear at the time this story was posted where in New York the event headlined by Matias-Smith will be held.

The initial plan was to make Matias-Smith part of “The Ring IV” undercard November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Fresh Productions instead decided to bring the fight to New York.

Matias (23-2, 22 KOs), rated No. 2 by The Ring at junior welterweight, won his WBC belt when he edged the Dominican Republic’s Alberto Puello by majority decision as part of “The Ring III” card July 12 at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York.

Matias battered previously unbeaten Jeremias Ponce (RTD 5) to claim the vacant IBF title in February 2023.

He made one successful defense, against Shohjahon Ergashev (RTD 6), before surprisingly losing his title in a homecoming defense against Liam Paro (UD 12) in June 2024. However, he recalibrated with a pair of wins before topping Puello.

Smith (18-0, 13 KOs), rated at No. 7 by The Ring at junior welterweight, won British, Commonwealth, European and WBC regional titles. He owns wins over Sam Maxwell (TKO 7), former world title challenger Jose Zepeda (KO 5) and Mathieu Germain, whom he beat by a lopsided 12-round unanimous decision in his most recent fight April 19.

The Matias-Smith undercard will feature former two-time bantamweight champ Emmanuel Rodriguez (22-3, 13 KOs), who will fight for the first time since he lost his IBF title to Ryosuke Nishida last May. Also tabbed to appear is two-time Olympian Jeyvier Cintron (13-1, 6 KOs) and junior welterweight Alfredo Santiago (17-2, 8 KOs) in separate action against opponents to be determined.

Subriel Matias-Dalton Smith: Hearn Questions Delayed Date, WBC President Replies

Dalton Smith's impending world title shot has been pushed back until early 2026, a development that has annoyed his promoter Eddie Hearn.

News of a reported January 10 date in New York will mean the 28-year-old (18-0, 13 KOs) would not have boxed for eight-and-a-half months before travelling to enemy territory when facing a career-best challenge of two-time titleholder Subriel Matias.

Matias' promoter, Fresh Productions, won the purse bid with a $1.9m offer and expected to house the WBC 140-pound title fight on a show in his native Puerto Rico next month. Matias (23-2, 22 KOs) reclaimed world honours with a 12-round majority decision over Alberto Puello as part of Ring III in New York on July 12, before facing off with Smith in the ring.

Instead, it's been pushed a further two months back and Hearn was unhappy when asked for his thoughts on the latest development.

He told The Ring: "I was very disappointed because it was well outside the timeframe given within the purse bid, the WBC's rules. That fight had to take place by the first week in December, if it was allowed to go into January, we would've bid more money, your budget starts again from the beginning of the year - we could've done it in Sheffield in January.

"They've applied to stage it on January 10, it's at [the WBC's] their discretion but thought that was a bit harsh. We'll see if it actually goes ahead, was a big Puerto Rico homecoming and now randomly at Barclays Center apparently on Jan. 10, let's hope they can find a way to do it, if not, we're the second bidder and will do the fight instantly."

He continued, saying that Matchroom would be ready to pounce on any further delay or disruption having bid $1.71m in September.

"Watch this space, we'll see if the money is lodged and if not, Matchroom will do the fight. Dalton will fight for the WBC title in January, they didn't bid with the intention of not doing the fight but it's a big bid, if there's no deal with Matias in terms of the number, I don't see how they can financially make the event possible but who knows, it's a funny old game."

Smith won the vacant EBU European title with a first-round knockout win over Walid Ouizza on January 25, before a one-sided points win beyond Mathieu Germain three months later in Sheffield after being elevated to the WBC's mandatory challenger. That was billed as a stay-busy assignment but has inadvertently proved his last appearance of the year.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman told The Ring that this was a 'seven-day adjustment' and there is always sanctioning body-specific criteria to determine those changes, when requested.

"It's important to note fights won on purse bid are to take place 90-120 days after the successful bid, Eddie and Matchroom know this," he said.

Jan. 10 would be a full 130 days after the September 2 purse bid, meaning Smith will now tick over before returning to training camp in early November for his first stateside matchup.

Subriel Matias-Dalton Smith set for January 10 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center

The first significant fight of the new year is Brooklyn-bound.

BS has confirmed that the Subriel Matias-Dalton Smith WBC junior welterweight title fight will land at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The attractive matchup remains set for January 10, with the venue finalized and to be formally confirmed during a November 10 press conference on site.

Matias, 23-2 (22 KOs), will attempt the first defense of the WBC 140lbs belt he claimed in a hard-fought, majority decision win over previously unbeaten Alberto Puello. The bout took place as part of a loaded July 12 show in Queens, New York.

Confirmation of the venue for his mandatory title defense versus Smith, 18-0 (13 KOs), will now provide Puerto Rico’s Matias with a second straight fight in the greater New York City area.

The decision to head back east came in lieu of a planned hometown headliner.

Fresh Productions, Matias’ career-long promoter, won a purse bid to claim the rights to the ordered title fight. Plans at the time called for an island-flavored show in December and somewhere in P.R., to include Fresh boxers Alfredo Santiago, Jeyvier Cintron and former IBF 118lbs titlist Emmanuel Rodriguez.

The lineup will remain the same, even with the new destination.

Either way, Smith will fight for the first time in the U.S. and in his first career title fight.

The unbeaten contender first became a threat to the crown with a fifth-round knockout of former title challenger Jose Zepeda last March 23 in his hometown of Sheffield, England. His placement atop the WBC rankings was solidified after a 12-round, unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Mathieu Germain on April 19, also in Sheffield.

Smith has fought outside the UK just twice before as a pro but never outside of Europe.

Matias’ win over Puello came 13 months after the end of his IBF 140lbs title reign.

He held the belt from February 2023 through a June 2024 defeat to Liam Paro, ironically at home in Manati, P.R. The setback to Australia’s Paro was the first fight on home soil for Matias since 2019, only to end in disappointment.

Matias rebounded with knockout wins last November and earlier this March, both in P.R. He was poised to once again challenge for the IBF belt before the opportunity arose to challenge the Dominican Republic’s Puello for the WBC crown.

The title-lifting effort over Puello marked Matias’ only career victory to come via decision. He previously boasted a 100 percent knockout to win ratio, with his only distance fights having come in his lone two career defeats prior to July.

SUBRIEL MATIAS-DALTON SMITH LANDS AT BROOKLYN'S BARCLAYS CENTER

After months of delays, it has been confirmed Subriel Matias' first WBC junior welterweight title defence against Dalton Smith will take place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on January 10.

Boxing Scene were first to report the news, with a November 10 press conference tabbed in the U.S.' most populous city.

WBC's No. 1-ranked contender Smith (18-0, 13 KOs) originally expected to head to enemy territory in Puerto Rico around late November time, then sometime in December, but will now travel 10 miles from the scene of Matias' latest triumph.

Smith began his year with a first-round knockout of Walid Ouizza to win the European title, before solidifying his status as the sanctioning body's top challenger after a dominant 12-round points victory over Mathieu Germain on April 19.

Matias meanwhile, scored a gritty majority decision win over previously-unbeaten beltholder Alberto Puello as part of a stacked Ring III show on July 12 in Queens, New York before the pair faced off minutes later in the ring.

Smith's career-long promoter Eddie Hearn naturally wanted to secure home advantage for his charge, recently casting doubt about the matchup going ahead as planned after being outbid $200,000 by Matias' promoter Fresh Productions.

As it stands, junior welterweight contender Alfredo Santiago, bantamweight duo Jeyvier Cintron and former IBF champion Emmanuel Rodriguez - all boxers under the same banner - will feature in bouts to be announced in due course.
