Callum Simpson-Troy Williamson ‘agreed’ between Boxxer and Matchroom

A deal has been reached for Troy Williamson to fight Callum Simpson, according to Williamson’s promoter Eddie Hearn.

Before the conclusion of their broadcast agreement with Sky Sports the 29-year-old Simpson established himself as one of Boxxer’s most valuable assets. The promotional organization has since agreed to work with the BBC, and while considerable uncertainty surrounds the future of many of the fighters with which they had been associated, Simpson, at least, appears central to their plans.

Simpson won the vacant European super-middleweight title in June when stopping Italy’s Ivan Zucco, having previously established himself as the British and Commonwealth champion at 168lbs. Victory over the 34-year-old Williamson – promoted by Matchroom – could take him closer to the total of the three British title defenses he requires to win his Lonsdale Belt “outright”, as he has in the past aimed to do.

There had remained the possibility of purse bids taking place for an appealing fight between Simpson and his fellow Briton Hamzah Sheeraz for the European title, but Matchroom’s Hearn told BS: “We’ve agreed a deal for Troy Williamson to fight Callum Simpson, so that will be Boxxer’s next show – Callum Simpson against Troy Williamson. That will be in November, December.”

The rearranged British heavyweight title fight between Frazer Clarke and Jeamie Tshikeva has already been confirmed for November 29 at Vaillant Live in Derby, England and represents the start of the partnership between Boxxer and the BBC.

Queensberry Promotions’ allegedly, who guides the career of Sheeraz, had also been asked about the possibility of his fighter challenging Simpson, and he told BS: “That ain’t gonna happen, that fight, I don’t think. I think Hamzah’s well past that. I’m in the Hamzah Sheeraz business – that’s the business we’re in. I just think, with what’s happening with Hamzah, he’ll have better opportunities than that.”

Terrible fight.

Will probably be on DAZN as BBC only gave Boxxer 4 shows.

Seems like a step backwards for Simpson. Not sure what he gains from a fight like this, other than rounds - maybe.

It’s gotta be up there with talking about yourself in the third person for quotes/moments that make us fans laugh at the boxers and promoters when they are being interviewed.

Callum Simpson-Troy Williamson for EBU, British Titles in Leeds on Dec. 20

Earlier this month, Callum Simpson defending his EBU super middleweight title against Hamzah Sheeraz was teased as a possibility.

Instead, the 29-year-old champion will make his first defence against Troy Williamson on a BOXXER show in Leeds come December 20.

Simpson-Sheeraz would have advanced to purse bids at noon CET on Tuesday if they hadn't agreed terms but instead, the Barnsley fan favourite will make a voluntary defence before Christmas, with the winner ordered to face Sheeraz immediately without exception.

Simpson (18-0, 13 KOs) has been professional since June 2019, outpointing Boris Crighton (UD10) in July 2023 and besting Mexican tough guy Jose Macias (UD10) three months later after stopping Celso Neves in three rounds on his BOXXER debut earlier in the year.

The 29-year-old arrived on the wider scene when claiming the British and Commonwealth titles with a dominant 12-round decision win over Zak Chelli in August 2024, stopping Steed Woodall in his first defence five months later before levelling up on June 7.

He climbed off the canvas twice before stopping Italy's previously-unbeaten contender Ivan Zucco in a thrilling 10-round shootout during BOXXER's final show broadcast on Sky Sports.

The promotion have since signed an exclusive agreement with BBC and will end their own five-month absence next month in Derby, a show headlined by a rescheduled Frazer Clarke-Jeamie Tshikeva matchup for the vacant British heavyweight title.

Williamson (21-4-1, 15 KOs) worked his way up on the small hall shows before his big break came, upsetting Ted Cheeseman (TKO10) to win the British junior middleweight title in October 2021. After one defence against Mason Cartwright, he lost it in a wide 12-round decision loss against impending world title challenger Josh Kelly in December 2022.

The 34-year-old's form fell off sharply afterwards as he suffered three consecutive defeats -- Caoimhin Agyarko (SD10) before 10-round unanimous decision losses to Ishmael Davis and Jahi Tucker.

However, the veteran breathed new life into his career when moving up to 168-pounds, where he upset English titleholder Mark Dickinson with a ninth-round stoppage on Matchroom's September 6 show in Sunderland, with Simpson in attendance.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a member of the EBU ratings panel.

This should be a good, fun scrap & exactly what the sport needs on terrestrial tv.

Ultimately I think Simpson will be a bit too big & good but he doesn’t do bad fights so he’ll give Williamson a chance.

Troy Williamson believes ‘perfect opponent’ Callum Simpson is in for a shock

If Darlington super-middleweight Troy Williamson was ever afforded the luxury of creating his ideal opponent, chances are that ideal opponent would look a lot like his next one: Callum Simpson.

He would, during the design phase, have the same measurements, the same style, and the same attitude to a fight. He would also come with the same titles – the British, Commonwealth and European super-middleweight belts – and each of those titles Williamson would try to imagine wearing around his own waist come Christmastime.

For that to happen, of course, Williamson, the current English super-middleweight champion, will first have to defeat Simpson, his ideal opponent, when the pair meet at some stage in December. The exact date of that fight, as well as its location, is yet to be revealed, though Williamson claims to know this much. He knows that, one, the fight is almost signed and sealed, and he also knows that this is the fight he wants more than any other.

“I’m waiting for the contract to come through and hopefully we’ll have it all sorted by next week,” Williamson told Boxing Scene. “I didn’t really think about this Callum Simpson fight until his manager dropped me a message after my last fight [against Mark Dickinson in September] and said, ‘Congratulations, great win… the Simpson fight is there next if you want it.’ Once it got put to me, I thought I would then chase it up and it’s happening now.”

Part of the reason why Williamson had, until September, never entertained the prospect of fighting Callum Simpson was because Williamson was, until September, fighting in a completely different weight class. Before moving to super-middleweight, you see, Williamson had been accustomed to squeezing his large frame down to middleweight, where, in the space of 12 months, he suffered back-to-back decision losses to Ishmael Davis and Jahi Tucker. Before that, Williamson was somehow even making junior-middleweight, where he lost decisions to Josh Kelly and Caoimhin Agyarko.

“It was very foolish when I look back on it,” he said of his weight-making adventure. “It wasn’t healthy at all. I was having to cut my carbs two weeks before a fight and those last two weeks are the most vital weeks of your training camp. In that period, I wasn’t able to train as much as I wanted, or train as hard as I wanted. I was focused mainly on just losing weight. So, you weren’t seeing the best of me. Really, I should have moved up a long time ago.”

In his last fight, Williamson, now 34, certainly showed improvements as a super-middleweight. His ninth-round stoppage of Mark Dickinson, in fact, saw a return to the Troy Williamson of old: swarming, aggressive, powerful. He didn’t just get back to winning ways that night, he was back to winning a fight the way he ideally wants to win a fight: in style.

“I felt very good,” he said. “I was very confident going into the fight and throughout the whole camp and I knew that all I had to do on the night was execute what I had been doing in the gym. There was no doubt in my mind that I was going to be victorious. That was the most confident I have been in a long time. I knew what I could do at that weight. I wasn’t drained, I wasn’t killing myself, and I was enjoying training. A lot of people had written me off before that fight, which is understandable, but I knew I still had something to offer.

“If you look at my last couple of performances, when I was draining myself down, I wasn’t carrying that knockout power anymore. But as soon as I moved up to super-middleweight, that changed and the knockout power was back. I came back with a knockout in the ninth round and I showed that I also carry my power late. That power has definitely come up with me and it has maybe been enhanced as well.”

If so, that could spell trouble for Callum Simpson, the man Williamson expects to face in December. For although Simpson, 18-0 (13 KOs), has been almost faultless so far as a pro, he was dropped twice in his last fight, a decision win against Ivan Stucco, and for the first time showed brief signs of fragility. That doesn’t mean Williamson now considers Simpson vulnerable, or there for taking, but he does wonder whether the Barnsley man is ready for the type of fight Williamson has in mind for December.

“He is a good fighter,” said Williamson. “He is a come-forward fighter, very fit, tough, and all-action, just like me. It’s going to make for a very good, fan-friendly fight. He’s a perfect opponent for me. He’s going to be in my face; he’s going to bring the heat.

“But, in my personal opinion, I don’t think he has boxed anybody on my level. I think everybody he has beaten I would beat. The guy [Zucco] who put him down twice in his last fight doesn’t hit anywhere near as hard as me. I know he [Zucco] had some knockouts on his record, but who had he boxed?

“I’m not blowing my own trumpet, but I think I have the edge [over Simpson] in a lot of areas. I think I’m a better in-close fighter. I think I carry more power. He has fast hands, don’t get me wrong, but I’m not exactly slow, either. I also know I’m tough, I’m fit, and I can go into the trenches and come out victorious. I know he’ll be in my face all night, and throwing plenty of punches, but I’ve been there before and I understand what it takes.

“Callum has done what he needs to do to get where he is – British, Commonwealth and European champion – but I don’t think he’s had those same acid tests I have had. He’s beaten some good fighters, don’t get me wrong. He beat Zak Chelli, he beat Ivan Zucco. But the only really tough fight he had was that Zucco one, and I wouldn’t even say it was a particularly tough one. When he’s in there with me, I’ll be putting the pressure on him, and I’m definitely going to give him his hardest fight to date. We’ll then see if he’s able to cope with the pressure.”

Should all go to plan, the meeting of Williamson and Simpson might end up producing a late contender for British “Fight of the Year”. Certainly, on paper at least, the blend of their styles and two similar mindsets is an alluring proposition for those who like their action fought at close range and at a high pace. “I can’t see it being anything else, to be fair,” said Williamson, 21-4-1 (15 KOs). “I think it will be action-packed until I land that knockout power. When I hit him, and have him hurt, I’ll then get him out of there.”

Do that and Troy Williamson will have the perfect result against the perfect opponent and will, in turn, be able to enjoy the perfect one-two-three: British, Commonwealth and European titles. He will also be able to celebrate at the perfect time of the year, around Christmas, and reflect not only on his latest victory but the last couple of the years; years during which Williamson has experienced as many lows as highs and has often questioned whether boxing and all its imperfections is the game for him.

“It was hard, and I went through a dark time, but I know why I lost those three fights,” he said. “I knew it was all down to the weight. I couldn’t come out publicly and say that, because I took the fights. It was on me. That’s why I can’t regret those defeats. I chose to fight. But I was able to understand why I lost those fights and that helped me get out of that dark place and find some positivity again.

“I was close to walking away from boxing at one point, but I always knew there was plenty left and that if I just stepped up to the right weight class I could come again. Now the rest is history. Now I’m waking up a happy man. I’m back enjoying it. I know it’s an old cliché, but it’s true: a happy fighter is a dangerous fighter. I’m now ready to shock the world again.”

This is a "trap" fight for Simpson. I think he handles Williamson with little trouble, but if he's not ready mentally, it could came back to bite him in the backside.

Just out of interest, who rates him that highly?

Surely to be over rated you’ve got to have people saying you’re levels above your real level.

His name was linked with Sheeraz & nearly all the comments were people saying it’s a mismatch.

I’m from the same town as Simpson & I don’t hear people saying he’s world level or anything like that.

Fans just like him as he’s a good lad with an entertaining style

Boxrec have him #12 in the world, which I understand are points based, but there are definitely more than eleven better Super Middles out there.

I think Simpson is headed for a really good fight vs Diego Pacheco.

Assuming both carry on winning which I think they will then they will inevitably meet for either a unification or a World title fight.

Callum Simpson-Troy Williamson set for December 20 in Leeds

Callum Simpson is to defend his European, British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles against Troy Williamson on December 20 at the First Direct Bank Arena in Leeds.

The contest will represent the second of Simpson’s promoters’ Boxxer’s broadcast agreement with the BBC. The first, on November 29, is headlined by the contest between Frazer Clarke and Jeamie Tshikeva for the vacant British heavyweight title and, like Simpson-Williamson, is also in England.

Simpson, 29, last fought when in June winning the vacant European title after recovering from two knockdowns to stop Italy’s Ivan Zucco. He had also been in contention to fight his fellow Briton Hamzah Sheeraz, and in the 34-year-old Williamson confronts an opponent who in September won the English title in victory over Mark Dickinson.

“Leeds is going to be bouncing with the Barnsley Army on December 20,” said Simpson of the fight that will be shown on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three. “Troy’s a tough fighter but this is my time and I’m ready to prove again why I’m one of the most exciting boxers in Britain right now.

“To headline live on the BBC is massive and we’re putting Yorkshire boxing back on the map at the same time.”

“Callum’s had a great run but he’s never faced anyone like me,” said Williamson. “I’m gonna ruin his Christmas.

“I’ve been in big fights, I’ve been the champion, and I know what it takes. This is my opportunity to show that I’m number one and to take the belts home with me.”

The future of Ben Shalom’s Boxxer remains the subject of some uncertainty following the conclusion of their broadcast agreement with Sky Sports and, most recently, their refusal to bid to stage Chris Billam-Smith-Roman Fress, but the promoter said: “Callum Simpson-Troy Williamson is exactly the kind of fight we want to deliver for a national BBC audience. It’s a massive 50-50 domestic title clash between two elite fighters at the top of their game.

“Leeds will be electric on December 20, and we’re excited to showcase these incredible athletes to a whole new generation of fans. There are more big announcements coming – watch this space.”

Troy Williamson Seeks To Ruin Christmas, Callum Simpson Bout On Dec. 20 Official

BOXXER have today announced Callum Simpson-Troy Williamson will headline their December 20 show from Leeds' First Direct Bank Arena for Simpson's European, British and Commonwealth super middleweight titles.

Their 12-round matchup sees champion Simpson (18-0, 13 KOs) return to South Yorkshire six months after a thrilling European title win where he recovered from two knockdowns to stop previously-unbeaten operator Ivan Zucco at Barnsley's Oakwell Stadium.

The show will be broadcast live and free-to-air on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer as the 29-year-old seeks to cap a memorable year with his first defence of European honours. He defended the Lonsdale belt with a second-round stoppage of Steed Woodall on January 11.

BOXXER founder and CEO Ben Shalom described it as a 'massive 50-50 domestic title clash between two elite fighters at the top of their game,' and teased more big announcements to be revealed in due course.

In a press release, Simpson was excited to test his skills against a 'tough fighter in Troy.

"Leeds is going to be bouncing with the Barnsley Army on December 20. This is my time and I'm ready to prove again why I'm one of the most exciting boxers in Britain right now."

Troy Williamson meanwhile, warned the champion against getting comfortable in his fourth headline show.

"Callum's had a great run but he's never faced anyone like me, I'm gonna ruin his Christmas. I've been in big fights, been the champion and know what it takes. This is my opportunity to show that I'm number one, to take the belts home with me.

Simpson, rated No. 5 by the IBF, No. 7 with the WBA and No. 10 with the WBC, has been vocal about bridging the gap to world-level honours before too much longer as he finds himself positioned nicely in an ever-changing weight class now Canelo Alvarez has been dethroned.

Prospective matchups against Kevin Lele Sadjo, former IBF beltholder William Scull and Euro-mandated challenger Hamzah Sheeraz have all fallen by the wayside in recent months, though Williamson (21-4-1, 15 KOs) is no slouch despite a deceptive record.

He was thoroughly outboxed by impending world title challenger Josh Kelly to lose his unbeaten 19-0-1 record in December 2022 and has suffered a trio of decision defeats by Caoimhin Agyarko, Ishmael Davis and Jahi Tucker since then.

However, he's found a new home at super middleweight after squeezing his muscular frame down to 154-pounds with inconsistent results and announced himself to the weight class with a ninth-round stoppage win over Mark Dickinson on Matchroom's September 6 show.

This will be on BBC THREE.

Probably even less viewers than last night.

Going off last night, they can put on a card on BBC ONE, and it will be be finished before MOTD.

God knows where Adam Azim’s fight will broadcast.
