Reports in Germany that former champ Jack Culcay is bankrupt

BILD and BoxSport in Germany reports that former WBA champ Jack Culcay, 33-5 (14 KOs) is bankrupt.

The Potsdam District Court has opened insolvency proceedings against the former champ, who owes his former promoter Ingo Volckmann and Agon Sports about 100,000 euro (approximately $116,000), with most stemming from advance payments.

Culcay put up an incredible fight against Bakhram Murtazaliev in April 2024 in Falkensee with the vacant IBF title at stake but was knocked out in the 11th round. It was later announced he had retired but shortly thereafter the news came that he would just take a rest.

Culcay was then hired as a trainer for the Agon team with a salary of 2,000 euro ($2,300) a month. However, Culcay quit the job in June and now Volckmann and Agon want the advance payments back.

Culcay won the world championships as an amateur and then turned pro with Universum Box Promotion and later joined Sauerland Event. After back-to-back losses to Demetrius Andrade and Maciej Sulecki in 2017 Jack signed with Agon Sports in 2018.

Sucks when that stuff happens to a newly retired boxer. Wonder if he’ll come back now at 40. Culcay I believe was the first Ecuador-born to win any kind of title, although it was an interim belt and he was handed it against a ridiculously underserving challenger. Still, he put up some good fights against top or close to top tier guys, always falling short but giving a good effort
