Nicklaus Flaz-Delante ‘Tiger’ Johnson tops November 7 ProBox TV show

Nicklaus Flaz has a new date and opponent for his next outing.

The streaking welterweight prospect is set to take on Delante “Tiger” Johnson in a terrific crossroads matchup. Their bout is set to headline a November 7 ProBox TV event from a location to be determined.

Puerto Rico’s Flaz, 15-2 (10 KOs) was originally due to face Peter Dobson atop this weekend’s ProBox TV show from Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida. He was forced out of the show, however, when Dobson reportedly suffered an injury during training camp.

Ironically, Dobson recently posted that he is due to return to the ring sometime in November. However, it is Flaz who has the date and the main event slot – and an upgrade in opposition, to boot.

Johnson, 16-0 (7 KOs) was a former amateur standout, complete with his stint with the 2020 U.S. Olympic boxing team that competed in the Covid-delayed Tokyo Olympics. His pro career has produced mixed results in terms of gauging his ceiling, though he remains perfect through 16 starts.

The 27-year-old from Cleveland, Ohio is 2-0 on the year this far. He is coming off a dominant ten-round, unanimous decision over Janelson Bocachica on June 7 in Norfolk, Virginia. The bout marked the first time Johnson fought at and went the full ten-round distance.

Flaz has won six straight following a stunning first-round knockout defeat to a then-unbeaten Bocachica on an October 2020 ShoBox card from the Showtime bubble at Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The win streak began with back-to-back upset victories over unbeaten prospects Brian Ceballa and Jahi Tucker. The past four victories for Flaz have come on shows aired by ProBox TV, whose founder Garry Jonas also owns BS.

In his most recent start, Flaz racked up an impressive fourth-round stoppage of Alan Sanchez at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida. Three of his last four contests have ended inside the distance.

Dominic Valle vs. Miguel Torres added to Nov. 7 ProBox card

When Dominic Valle’s most recent fight was canceled, no one could have known there would be a silver lining.

Two months ago, Valle was scheduled to face Iron Alvarez on a ProBox card in Lakeland, Florida. That was, until Alvarez blew the 131lbs catchweight by more than four pounds and wouldn’t try to cut any further. Instead, Valle was a spectator that night as his brothers Marques and Kenyan registered wins.

Now, Dominic Valle, 11-0 (7 KOs), will get to uphold the family name on his own when he faces Mexico’s Miguel Torres, 15-2 (9 KOs), on November 7 on a ProBox TV card at RP Funding Center in Lakeland, Florida. The eight-round bout will be part of a card headlined by the intriguing Delante "Tiger" Johnson vs. Nicklaus Flaz showdown.

Valle says that most recent experience helped bring him to another level of intensity.

“This fight, I’m coming in different,” said the 24-year-old Valle, of Lutz, Florida. "I’m for sure the strongest I’ve ever been. The last fight falling out really woke up something new in me.

“I want to prove to myself and everyone that I’m next level, and I need to start fighting these next-level opponents and start making my way to the top of the sport, where I know I belong. These guys right now at this level don’t deserve to be in the ring with me, if we’re speaking truthfully.”

Valle admits he hasn’t seen much of the 26-year-old Torres, of Guadalajara, Mexico, but adds that he doesn’t usually like to watch much video of his opponents, preferring to take note of any tendencies he notices early and then allow his training and preparation to help him adjust.

Valle says that, although he has gone the distance in his past two fights, he isn’t worried about pressing for a knockout against Torres, saying he has gained valuable experience by going eight rounds in back-to-back fights.

What he does hope to do is show, in a fight about an hour’s drive from his hometown, that he deserves consideration among the best young fighters in his weight class.

“I’m just looking to bring myself higher in the rankings, in the best way that I feel is possible,” Valle said. "Just getting my name out there, getting my recognition and showing the boxing scene what I really am, which is the future of the sport."

Tsendbaatar Erdenebat and Katsuma Akitsugi join November 7th ProBox show in Lakeland

Top prospects will join Nicklaus Flaz and Delante “Tiger” Johnson in Florida next month

Two of ProBox’s more promising regulars, 2016 Olympic quarterfinalist Tsendbaatar Erdenebat and bantamweight prospect Katsuma Akitsugi, will see action on their November 7th Nicklaus Flaz vs Delante “Tiger” Johnson show in Lakeland, Florida.

Erdenebat (13-0, 6 KO) has bounced between 130 and 135 in recent years, but will be sticking to super featherweight against Brandon Benitez (21-4, 9 KO), a longtime featherweight who upset Can Xu but got taken to the cleaners by Robeisy Ramirez and William Foster III in his last two bouts.

Akitsugi (13-0, 3 KO) has been matched reasonably tough as a pro and takes what looks to be a notable step up against former two-time title challenger Vincent Astrolabio (20-5, 14 KO). Astrolabio upset Guillermo Rigondeaux in 2022, smashed Nikolai Potapov in a subsequent eliminator, then fell just short against Jason Moloney in a WBC title bid. He did get merked in one by Junto Nakatani last year, but that’s Junto Nakatani; he does that to people.

Nicklaus Flaz-Tiger Johnson winner to take a title soon, says Paulie Malignaggi

The essence of ProBoxTV bouts is captured in Friday’s main event pitting welterweights Nicklaus Flaz and Delante “Tiger” Johnson, says analyst and the division’s former titlist Paulie Malignaggi.

“The winner of this fight will be a welterweight champion,” Malignaggi said while dissecting the bout on Thursday’s episode of “Boxing Scene Today.” “Both of these guys could win a title,” he also said. “They’re better than some of the champions.”

Although the belts belong to Brian Norman Jnr (WBO), Lewis Crocker (IBF), Mario Barrios (WBC) and Rolando “Rolly” Romero (WBA), Flaz, 29, and Johnson, 27, will showcase their potential in the main event of ProBoxTV’s Friday night card in Lakeland, Florida.

Analyst and former 140lbs titleholder Chris Algieri said he’s especially impressed with Flaz’s flow – as if he fights with headphones on to ensure an undisrupted rhythm.

“He’s the kind of guy who sets the tone early with that vibrant movement. … He’s offensively and defensively flawless,” Algieri said of Flaz, 15-2 (10 KOs), who is ranked 10th by the IBF and 11th by the WBO.

Yet Johnson’s amateur pedigree and technique, which made him a 2021 Olympic quarterfinalist, has the Top Rank fighter off to a 16-0 start with seven knockouts.

“Fundamentals rule everything,” Algieri said. “It’s a very interesting stylistic matchup. ‘Tiger’ says he’s seen everything. If Flaz gets this into a firefight …”

That undeterred activity of Flaz is difficult to obstruct, and “Boxing Scene Today” host Jimmy Smith said it reminds him of what Antonio Tarver said about dealing with the ever-active Roy Jones Jnr – you’ve got to throw sticks into the spokes of the bicycle wheel to alter the busy fighter’s plans.

“Then the person [Flaz, in this case] starts to ask, ‘Can I get back into this rhythm?’ I’m sure ‘Tiger’ Johnson understands that’s what needs to be done,” Malignaggi said. “But saying it and doing it are two different things. If someone can do it, it’s [Johnson].”

Flaz’s progression with ProBoxTV counts TKO triumphs in three of his past four bouts since the start of 2024. Johnson was made available as Top Rank operates without a broadcast deal after closing its union with ESPN in July.

“This fight has excited me from the time I found out we had it,” Malignaggi said. “I am smitten by these fighters. It’s beautiful boxing.”

Johnson’s task of compromising Flaz’s activity would have an extra benefit of diminishing his output, Malignaggi said.

“Guys become spectators when they get hit and miss [punches],” Algieri said. “Can Flaz do that to Johnson? Is Johnson really the goods? Is Flaz on a different level? Can he turn Johnson into a spectator?”

That prompted Malignaggi to project that the winner will one day wear a welterweight belt.

“The standard of the division … is kind of weak,” he said.

Also on the card that begins at 6 p.m. ET on Friday on ProBoxTV’s YouTube channel is a bantamweight fight between Japan’s Katsuma Akitsugi, 13-0 (3 KOs), and the Philippines’ Vincent Astrolabio, 20-5 (15 KOs), and who was knocked out in the first round of his title shot against then-champion Junto Nakatani in July 2024.

“Akitsugi comes to fight and he’s raising his level of competition,” Malignaggi said. “Asian rivalries can become a turf war.”

Algieri noted how Akitsugi has been hardened by gym wars while training in Los Angeles, and Malignaggi said he has witnessed the transformation with a knockout, a stoppage and a convincing victory on the scorecards during Akitsugi’s past three ProBox bouts.

“High output, creative shot selection – it’s very impressive,” Malignaggi said.

Akitsugi is a murderous body puncher-anyone who missed his bout should watch it.
