November 10th, 1965: Sugar Ray's Last Fight

A day like today it would be the 60th year anniversary of the great Sugar Ray Robinson's last professional fight. He lost by a ten round decision against upcoming contender Joey Archer of the Bronx, NY. The fight was held at Pittsburgh, PA at the Civic Arena.

Archer scored his 45th and last win of 46 fights. And was ready for world title contention for Dick Tiger's World Middleweight Crown.

It turned out to be Archer's last win of his boxing career. He lost his next 3 fights. One with top contender Don Fullmer, brother of the great Gene Fullmer and his two consecutive losses against the great Emile Griffith for Griffith's World Middleweight Crown in 1966 and 1967.

Not a big puncher, he had solid wins against Rubin "Hurricane" Carter (W10) and Dick Tiger also by decision. But, he was able to drop Robinson on the canvas to gain a convincing unanimous decision over the man the sports writer claim as "The Greatest Pound per Pound Fighter of All-time"

After 175 wins in almost 200 fights, and 110 knockout wins, the original Sugar Ray retired for good.

To me, he was a great fighter but a little overrated. Henry Armstrong's resume impress me more

Everybody got their own opinions. I don't think that Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest boxer ever. Let alone the most complete boxer.
