Stephen ‘Breadman’ Edwards parts ways with Caleb Plant

Caleb Plant will be on the hunt for a new trainer going forward.

In this video interview with trainer Stephen ‘Breadman’ Edwards he reveals that he’s officially split with Caleb Plant over the summer, following Plant’s loss to Armando Resendiz. Unlike most of these situations where the fighters seemingly blame their losses on their trainers, resulting in them being let go, Edwards suggests here that he was the one to walk away from the professional relationship.

Edwards would be clear that he harbors no ill feelings towards Plant and while he didn’t want to get into many details as to why he decided to walk away, but he does clearly suggest that he wasn’t happy with how their last training camp transpired.

“I’m not going to be training Caleb, so I really don’t know (what’s next for him). I’ve been hearing about his future fights but I really don’t know what’s going on but I’m not going to be training Caleb anymore,” Edwards said.

“I don’t really know what direction he want to go in but I just let him know about three or four weeks after the fight that I would be stepping away from training him. I never really talked about it but I’m hearing the Charlo fight and different fights that people keep asking me, but it’s just something I let him know — this was way back in June.

“I want to say I’ve got love for Caleb so it’s not a thing of like it’s a confrontational relationship or nothing like that, he don’t owe me no money or nothing like that…Sometimes relationships just run their course and I can just put it like that. I got respect for him so I wasn’t going to put him in a situation where he have a fight and then I tell him I’m not going to train him.

“I wouldn’t do that to him, so three to four weeks after that (Resendiz) fight, towards the end June, I think he fought May 31st, sometimes towards the end of June I let him know I wished him luck and thanked him for the opportunity but I let him know that I wasn’t going to be coming back.

“For this camp right here it was just different, that’s all I can say. It’s nothing bad, I’m not mad at him, I’m not disappointed at him, if anything I’m just a little confused as to why the camp didn’t go the way it normally would go, but it’s life and we’ll move on.”

Stephen Edwards Wishes 'Tremendous' Caleb Plant Well After Coaching Split

When Caleb Plant was at his lowest, Stephen 'Breadman' Edwards helped him get back on track.

But despite Edwards pushing the right buttons in Plant's two stoppage wins against Anthony Dirrell and Trevor McCumby, their partnership has officially come to an end.

As for the exact reasoning behind their split, Edwards remained mum on those specifics.

"I don't wanna give out any details," Edwards told The Ring. "But Caleb and I are no longer working together."

Just a few months ago, Plant (23-3, 14 KOs) was expected to use the aforementioned momentum gained in 2024, pushing him to new heights in 2025. Yet, what was supposed to be an impressive but straightforward assignment against Jose Armando Resendiz on May 31 at Las Vegas' Michelob Ultra Arena proved one of his most difficult nights instead.

Although a win would have set up a super middleweight matchup with Jermall Charlo, tentatively scheduled for the winter months, Plant was forced to accept a split decision upset defeat.

Talk of an immediate rematch surfaced while Plant pondered his options and critics questioned whether he's simply on the decline after looking unspectacular in their Prime Video headliner.

Nonetheless, as reported by The Ring's Mike Coppinger, a Plant-Charlo matchup is in the offing for sometime in early 2026 - potentially alongside Resendiz-Edgar Berlanga. If that comes to fruition, the former IBF beltholder will have a new voice leading his corner.

As for some level of animosity, there isn't any from Edwards. In the past, the longtime trainer has always considered Plant a terrific fighter and while their relationship will have changed, his thoughts have not.

"I have nothing but love and respect for Caleb," Edwards continued. "He's a tremendous fighter and great person overall. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Caleb and wish him nothing but the best."
