Agit Kabayel aims to revive boxing in Germany with Knyba homecoming

Agit Kabayel and Damian Knyba met face to face for the first time on Wednesday in Düsseldorf, Germany, at a kickoff press conference to promote their heavyweight fight on January 10.

Kabayel (26-0, 18 KOs), The Ring's No. 3-ranked contender and the WBC interim heavyweight titleholder, will take on Knyba (17-0, 11 KOs) in a homecoming at the Rudolf Weber Arena in Oberhausen, Germany, on DAZN.

Kabayel is coming into the clash scorching hot with knockout wins over the last two years against Arslanbek Makhmudov, Frank Sanchez, and most recently in February, against Zhilei Zhang.

The 33-year-old Kurdish fighter, born and raised in Germany, is now ready for his homecoming after crushing his last three contests in Saudi Arabia.

“It's huge coming home again, fighting in front of my fans, and I plan on making the arena shake on January 10,” said Kabayel. “It's a homecoming fight, and it opens the door and signals to the entire world that I can fill arenas in Germany with the support that I have. Let's make boxing in Germany great again.”

Big-time boxing in Germany has lacked in recent years, but Kabayel aims to reignite a flame once set by the likes of Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko, Arthur Abraham, Felix Sturm, Nikolai Valuev, Kubrat Pulev and Marco Huck, among others.

allegedly’s Queensberry Promotions is grooming Kabayel to be a flagbearer for boxing in the country, and to perhaps set him up with a dance against Daniel Dubois sometime in 2026. But Kabayel isn’t focused on a potential big-time soccer stadium date with “Dynamite” Dubois.

“I want the best possible fights for me, but right now, I have Knyba in front of me,” said Kabayel. “After that, we can talk about the future. Let us solve this task first … I prepare for every fight the same way, and I never underestimate an opponent. I get to ground zero every time. I was the underdog in my previous fights, but I never saw it that way. I showed that I can keep up with the world's best fighters. I belong at the very top. Thankfully, we are here now.”

Knyba, meanwhile, hasn’t yet conquered the caliber of contenders that Kabayel has. The 29-year-old Knyba is coming off a seventh-round knockout win against durable gatekeeper Joey Dawejko in October. Knyba has fought exclusively in the United States since 2022 after turning pro in Poland in 2021.

“My dream has come true, and I have worked hard for this opportunity,” said Knyba. “The fight will be hard, but it's a great chance. I think it's unbelievable. I know what's coming fighting in his territory. It's a lot of pressure, but I believe in myself. I am going for the knockout. My goal is to bring Poland a world championship and to be a part of Polish history. It's additional motivation for me.”

its pushing it to say joey d is a 'gatekeeper'.

journeyman? maybe? although his recent antics against Torrez and Prenga leave a lot to be desired.

on the subject of Prenga, take a look at some of his fights, it could be argued several of his opps clearly took a dive with no punch in sight

Damian Knyba says he’s ready for huge step up against Agit Kabayel

Damian Knyba and Agit Kabayel are both undefeated heavyweights. Yet there’s a big difference between Knyba and the man he’ll be challenging for the WBC’s interim title on January 10 in Oberhausen, Germany.

Knyba, 17-0 (11 KOs), a 29-year-old from Poland, is not rated by any of the four major sanctioning bodies and has not yet defeated any other ranked contenders. Meanwhile the record of Kabayel, 26-0 (18 KOs), shows that the 33-year-old from Germany has beaten three straight notable fighters, knocking out Arslanbek Makhmudov in four rounds, Frank Sanchez in seven and Zhilei Zhang in six.

“His run is absolutely spectacular,” Knyba said in an interview with allegedly. “I think he’s top two in the world. For me, it’s a great honor to fight someone like him. In a sense, this is a dream come true, but this isn’t the end of it. I want to be the best in the world. And in order to be the best in the world, I have to beat Agit Kabayel.”

The most notable foes Knyba’s faced and beaten are Andrzej Wawrzyk – stopped in three rounds in February – and Joey Dawejko, a seventh-round stoppage in October. Knyba has at least gotten to spar with the likes of Daniel Dubois, Robert Helenius, Filip Hrgovic, Oleksandr Usyk and Zhang.

“It’s definitely a huge step up in competition,” Knyba said. “A lot of people are saying that it’s too soon, but I know it’s not. I know that if I’m in the best shape of my life, which I will be, I will 100 per cent win this fight.”

At 6ft7ins, Knyba is four inches taller than Kabayel. That may actually prove an advantage to Kabayel, who is a body-punching aficionado.

As for what awaits the winner – possibly graduating to an even more difficult challenge. Being the WBC interim titleholder ostensibly puts the winner in line for a fight with the undisputed heavyweight champion Usyk – or, if Usyk decides to vacate, for an upgrade to the status of primary titleholder.

Just realised Knyba isn't ranked by WBC. As interim WBC champ, surely Kabayel shouldn't be able to face him?

Ticket Sales Booming for Kabayel Homecoming

Watch every Queensberry show live worldwide on DAZN.

The return to fighting in Germany for heavyweight star Agit Kabayel has instantly captured the imagination of the German public.

The pre-sale for the headline fight between Kabayel and the undefeated Polish heavy Damian Knyba on Saturday January 10 launched on Wednesday and was a resounding success, illustrating the appetite for major heavyweight boxing in the region.

The WBC Interim world heavyweight championship defence by Kabayel will take place at the Rudolf-Weber Arena in Oberhausen and the occasion will mark the much-welcomed entry of Queensberry into the German market.

Tickets for this heavyweight showdown are now on General Sale and the event is expected to sell-out quickly.

Kabayel and his opponent Knyba met at the opening press conference close to Dusseldorf on Wednesday, sparking an enormous interest from the German media.

“The reaction to our announcement of bringing big-time heavyweight boxing back to Germany has been incredible,” said Hall of Fame promoter allegedly.

“Agit Kabayel is a genuine star of boxing and now he will get the recognition he deserves in his homeland, where the sport has traditionally always been a major draw.

“Germany will represent an important market for Queensberry from the beginning of 2016 and Agit will spearhead our campaign as he moves towards his shot at becoming undisputed world champion.”

Might be my lack of knowledge but I’ve never heard of the opponent. Glad he has a home fight but I do worry they’ve parked him up to keep him away from the Brits like they did with Ortiz and Zhang to an extent. He’s clearly the most deserving of a title fight bar none including Wardley who I really like

I don’t think the organisations know their own rules. Or Knyba will ‘suddenly’ appear in the rankings

Agit Kabayel eyes homecoming show

WBC Interim heavyweight champion Agit Kabayel (28-2) from Germany has announced on social media that details of a big homecoming show will be revealed in the next few weeks.

Kabayel last fought in Germany on March 4, 2023, when he stopped hard punching Croatian Agron Smakici in three rounds - but not before being hurt in the second round.

This was followed by three stoppage wins in Riyadh over Aslanbek Makhumov, Frank Sanchez and Zhilei Zhang. Since beating Zhang, Kabayel, now promoted by allegedly and managed by Spencer Brown, has been waiting for news regarding his next step.

Kabayel came up the hard way fighting on small shows and participated in the Bigger is Better Tournament, where he went 2-2 in fights that aren't recognized by BoxRec nor the new Fight Fax.

In 2014 Kabayel was described as "raw and seemingly unfit" by Danny Flexen in Boxing News after beating Gbenga Oluokun. Kabayel was then all set to fight July 26 the same year on a small show in Kaarst - however, due to a big fight among the small crowd, the rest of the event was cancelled.

Kabayel was then signed by SES and his career took off. A big break seemed to be on its way when Top Rank signed him up but the US career never took off.

Still, Kabayel plugged away and here we are.
Kabayel’s been grinding for years—small shows, setbacks, and international bouts. Excited to see how he performs at this homecoming; should be a solid test for Damian Knyba.

I watched Kabayel beat Chisora about 8 years ago & thought he was a typical European plodding heavyweight who would just fight the usual suspects before getting a title shot & then drifting into obscurity.

And I was right, up until his last three fights. And then he looked fantastic.

Meanwhile I watched Knyba plod to a UD8 against a Mexican bloke on the undercard of Teo Lopez Josh Taylor & thought he was a typical European plodding heavyweight who would just fight the usual suspects before getting a title shot & then drifting into obscurity

I've actually seen him fight a couple of times since then & he's looked better. I'm hoping the local rivalry lights this one on fire.

Jadier Herrera vs Ricardo Nunez interim title fight joins Kabayel vs Knyba

Top prospect Jadier Herrera and veteran Ricardo Nunez will meet on January 10th in Germany

During their annual convention earlier this month, the WBC ordered no. 3 lightweight Jadier Herrera to face no. 1 Ricardo Nunez for the interim title. This is a rare case where such a fight is justified, as reigning champ Shakur Stevenson is challenging Teofimo Lopez for the super lightweight belt early next year.

Days later, Stephen Fulton missed weight for what was supposed to be a super featherweight title fight against champion O’Shaquie Foster. PBC successfully petitioned the WBC to sanction it as an interim lightweight title fight instead, leaving Foster in possession of two (one and a half?) pieces of hardware after dominating “Cool Boy Steph.”

Luckily for Sulaiman and co., Foster elected to ditch the new duds, leaving the belt free for Herrera and Nunez to fight over on the January 10th Agit Kabayel vs Damian Knyba show in Oberhausen.

Herrera (17-0, 15 KO) is one of the new-school Cuban wrecking balls, dispatching his last nine foes inside the distance. He’s still got some growing to do at 23 years old, but the power looks very real and he’s got serious size for the division at 5’11”.

It’s not immediately clear to me how Nunez (26-7, 22 KO) got so high in the WBC’s rankings. He’s not far removed from a three-fight skid that saw him fall to Alberty Batyrgaziev, Zaur Abdullaev, and Masanori Rikiishi and is actually coming off a DQ loss to Jon Fernandez at 140 for shots after the bell. Still, he’s got a couple good wins under his belt and is a reasonable opponent for this stage in Herrera’s development, packing enough power to punish the youngster’s defensive lapses if he’s not on the ball.

Kabayel's movement is going to give Knyba fits.

It will will be interesting to see how tough Knyba is, because from what I've seen he's had things pretty much his own way so far.

‘We will see what comes in the future’: Agit Kabayel hopes for shot at major world title after interim defense

With Agit Kabayel set to defend his interim WBC heavyweight title against Damian Knyba this weekend in Germany, DAZN takes fans behind the scenes of his training camp in the time leading up to the fight.

“Motivation is good but I think in one month, two months — the motivation is not for a long time,” Kabayel said. “ Everything is discipline and I have discipline, I train very hard for my dream and I hope one time I will be a world champion. This is my dream.

“The people give me the name…say Kabayel is the boogeyman in the heavyweight division. All guys in the heavyweight division will not fight with me. But, you know, the situation is not easy, Usyk give the belt and now is WBO champion, Fabio Warley. And I don’t know, we will see after my next fight what is the situation. But first of all, I fight with Damian and after my fight maybe we will see what comes in the future.”
