Is that actually impressive?mickey1975 wrote: ↑28 Nov 2025, 14:17I don't. I just think he must have something to win an Olympic medal and hold a version of the world title for years.
It's arguably less impressive than numerous other heavyweights that have picked up Olympic medals or have beaten better opponents than him. Just to pick two, Tony Yoka and Joe Joyce. He might have something but he never showed it in a win against an opponent that was proven to be any good.

Possibly the most overrated boxer of all time. He was that generations Frank Bruno just with a better chin. A big oaf who hit hard and that's it.
People really do view that generation with rose tinted glasses.

In chronological order....
Jack Johnson
Gene Tunney
Joe Louis
Muhammad Ali
Larry Holmes
Lennox Lewis
Those six stand out for me.
Others that deserve a mention.
James J Jeffries
Jack Dempsey
Rocky Marciano
Joe Frazier
George Foreman
Mike Tyson
Clubber Laing
Klitschko brothers
And I've probably forgotten someone really really good.

Comparing between eras is weird. Because I think generally athletes get better through the years. Boxing may well have an exception to that because I think the 80s/90s in heavyweight boxing was probably very very heavier on the PEDs…
I think prime fury would beat prime Ali. (Very unpopular opinion)… but does that mean he is better on the GOAT list? I don’t think so.
Carl lewis is higher on my 100m goat list than zharnel Hughes… but his pb isn’t top worse.

Re: Fury - Top 10 of all time
I could see prime Tyson struggling with Fury more than Usyk. Because I think Usyk's best attribute is space control, and I can't think of a heavy with faster offensive footwork than the young Tyson.
Most of us can name a handful of heavies we think had the potential to beat him, but Holyfield was the only one who fought fire with fire and came through. We'll never know about 1991. Otherwise you had to spoil until he tired, as per Lewis' plan, and I just don't think Usyk would've been strong enough to temper his early ferocity with clinches. Whereas Fury, on account of his size in a perfect example of how it can sometimes be a massive help, would've been.
Most fighters stiffened up against Tyson, talents abandoned to fear, but continually covering up and looking to grab at every opportunity was a recognised tactic for those with the tools to frustrate him. I still think he'd have got to Fury, but fancy he'd have found Usyk an easier win. But we've seen Usyk beat Fury, so I'd back Ali to do the same.
As for the Wilder chat, I think he was physically fantastic in his prime - surely one of the most gifted heavies in that regard, but he always lacked self-belief in his boxing and spent too much time on his bike looking to snipe. For the times it paid off, his career's amounted to spectacle over content. If there's an exception, it's the time he used his handspeed and reach to go to Fury's body in that first round.

I cannot believe people think that Mike Tyson would struggle again Fury. A 1986 Tyson would kick the shit out of any generation of Tyson Fury.
Maybe a 2004 version of Mike Tyson yes.

You have a valid point Mick, Mitch Green wasn't a bad fighter. I cannot recall the fight now, I remember it sure, but cannot remember the rounds,, but did Mitch stick tight to Tyson?

I think you’re on a hiding to nothing if you start judging it by who beat who and how they did it.
You’ve just got to use your eyes. If you think what Fury brings to the ring would impress any of the best heavyweights ever to box, then I personally don’t know what the fook you’re watching.

And if you use your eyes rather than purely looking at records, Fury lost to N'Gannou. That alone probably excludes him from top 50.Kilburn wrote: ↑29 Nov 2025, 17:39 I think you’re on a hiding to nothing if you start judging it by who beat who and how they did it.

Top 15 is absolutely laughable
Re: Fury - Top 10 of all time
He certainly isn't a Top 5 Heavyweight of all time.forcefraser wrote: ↑26 Nov 2025, 16:52 I've heard people saying Fury would be in the top 5 heavyweights of all time let alone the top 10.
It got me thinking who are his best 5 wins.
It's not great reading
He would be Top 5 if you're talking about British Heavyweights strictly, but not taking into account all countries. He'd probably fall somewhere in the Top 15.
Re: Fury - Top 10 of all time
Laying into Fury again are we? Unbelievable. No-one on this forum gave him a chance against Klitschko. Look how that turned out.
Then he was a fat has-been looking for a pension against Wilder (not!).
I don’t think Fury will fight again but he was fantastic and he was top of his division at one time. So, get over yourselves.

I was on holiday & was watching with a few beers so my view that Fury nicked it by a point isn’t one I’d strongly defend but I always thought that most people thought he edged it but got lucky because he didn’t take it seriously.
He lost to McDermott anyway.
Re: Fury - Top 10 of all time
I wouldn’t personally knock Fury for a couple of fortunate wins, when he has proven beyond doubt that he could have performed better in those fights and won handily.
But the best Fury has ever shown us, versus the best we have ever seen from a heavyweight boxer, is miles apart.

Re: Fury - Top 10 of all time
I am a little conflicted about Fury. I told everyone who would listen that Klitschko would destroy him. WK showed against AJ he wasn't shot, even if he was on the slide. That was a superb win. But he's done little of note since.
Hindsight is wonderful, but I've always maintained Wilder is an awful boxer. So Fury getting caught with a stray is understandable. But he should have won every minute of every sound aside from that if he was half as great as some would tell you. And they're his best (only good) wins in the 10 years since

Re: Fury - Top 10 of all time
I haven't personally spoken to anyone who thought Fury won, they all thought it was a robbery. I thought Ngannou won by a few rounds and even if you were very generous to Fury with all of the close rounds it would be a draw.a force wrote: ↑29 Nov 2025, 19:02Is the general consensus that he lost that?WestEndRiot wrote: ↑29 Nov 2025, 18:21And if you use your eyes rather than purely looking at records, Fury lost to N'Gannou. Re: Fury - Top 10 of all time
Green had fast, rangy hands and a serious chin, but even so needed to fight negatively to survive. It's partly because of the attributes Fury shares with Green that I can imagine him lasting a while against Tyson.
Whereas I think Usyk would've come unstuck for being too positive. Holyfield wasn't on his level as a boxer, but his toughness was never questioned after Bowe. The older Tyson would've been too slow for Usyk, I just think the younger version's amazing offensive footwork would've peeled him. A negative Fury at 9" taller with wings for arms would've been a very different challenge.
