Magdaleno vs. Yaqubov, Badillo vs. Soto set for November 29

A crossroads fight between junior lightweights Jessie Magdaleno and Muhammadkhuja Yaqubov will serve as the main event on November 29 at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. The show will stream on ProBox TV.

Magdaleno, 30-3 (19 KOs), is a former junior featherweight titleholder who won the WBO belt from Nonito Donaire in 2016 and lost it in his second defense, suffering an 11th-round knockout to Isaac Dogboe in 2018.

The 33-year-old, who lives in the Las Vegas region, has not been overly active in recent years. Magdaleno fought once in 2020, not at all in 2021, and once apiece in 2022, 2023 (a decision loss to Raymond Ford) and 2024 (a ninth-round KO loss to Brandon Figueroa). Magdaleno vs. Figueroa was for the interim WBC belt at 126lbs, but Magdaleno came in more than two pounds over the limit.

Magdaleno returned this past March and scored a third-round stoppage of the 15-7 Luis Coria. He is not currently ranked at junior lightweight by any of the four major sanctioning bodies.

Yaqubov, 23-1 (12 KOs), is a 30-year-old from Tajikistan who is ranked fourth at 130lbs by the WBC, whose title is owned by O’Shaquie Foster. Yaqubov’s lone loss came in 2022, when he dropped a wide decision to Foster. He has put together a five-fight win streak since. Most recently, Yaqubov took a majority decision in August against the 19-2 William Foster III.

In the co-feature, junior flyweight contender Erik Badillo will face former titleholder Elwin Soto.

Badillo, 18-0 (8 KOs), is rated first at 108lbs by the WBC and WBO, 8th by the IBF and 12th by the WBA. In July, he outpointed Gerardo Zapata in a WBC elimination bout; the title is held by Carlos Canizales.

Soto, 21-3-1 (13 KOs), won the WBO junior flyweight title in 2019 with a 12th-round TKO of Angel Acosta. He made three successful defenses before losing a split decision to Jonathan Gonzalez in 2021. Soto then lost again, edged unanimously but narrowly by one point on all three scorecards against former champ Hekkie Budler.

Soto is 2-0-1 since then and last fought in November 2024, when he had to settle for a split draw with the 11-3-3 Moises Caro. He is currently ranked 12th by the WBO and 13th by the WBC.

Muhammad Yaqubov vs. Jessie Magdaleno to headline Nov. 29 show

World-rated junior lightweight Muhammad Yaqubov will face former WBO junior featherweight titleholder Jessie Magdaleno on November 29.

The ProBox show will take place at Save Mart Center, Fresno, California.

Yaqubox, the WBC No. 4-ranked contender, has won his last five since dropping a decision to O'Shaquie Foster, while Magdaleno is looking to get back into title contention after losing two of his last three fights.

In the co-feature, Erick Badillo (18-0, 8 KOs), who is rated No. 8 by The Ring at junior flyweight, will put his WBC and WBO No. 1 position on the line against former WBO 108-pound ruler Elwin Soto (21-3-1, 13 KOs).

Meanwhile, 2016 Olympian Karlos Balderas (16-2, 14 KOs) will take on a returning Carlos Sanchez (25-3, 19 KOs) at junior welterweight.

Justin Pauldo (19-2, 9 KOs) and Nike Theran (20-1, 14 KOs) will square off at lightweight.

Yaqubox (23-1, 12 KOs) turned professional in Russia a decade ago and won his first 18 fights. He noticeably notched wins over Mark Urvanov (UD 12) in February 2018 and faded former junior bantamweight titlist Tomas Rojas (UD 12) in March 2020.

However, the Tajikistan native saw his unbeaten run come to an end against Foster (UD 12) in March 2022. To his credit, he has returned with wins over the likes of Pablo Vicente (UD 10) and, most recently, William Foster III (MD 10) on August 15.

Magdaleno (30-3, 19 KOs) was a standout amateur before turning professional in 2010. His early career was something of a slow burn, but he came good when he upset Nonito Donaire (UD 12) for the WBO 122-pound title in November 2016.

Instead of becoming a star, in his own right, he surprisingly lost his belt to Isaac Dogboe (KO 11) in his second defense. When he returned, he picked up four wins but wasn't very active and lost to Raymond Ford (UD 12) and was stopped by Brandon Figueroa (KO 9) when they contested the Interim WBC featherweight title last May. He has since got back to winning ways, stopping Luis Coria (TKO 3) on March 22.

Justin Pauldo admits the queue to face him is a short one

Justin Pauldo has set his sights high ahead of his important clash with Nike Theran.

They fight on Saturday at the Save Mart Arena in Fresno, California. Pauldo, 19-2 (9 KOs) is confident big things lie ahead on the other side of this weekend’s ProBox TV show.

Now 31, the Houston-based Floridian said his victory over former IBF 130lbs titlist Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov two fights ago saw him level up.

“Absolutely,” Pauldo said. “I think the Rakhimov fight came with notoriety and made me more noticed in the boxing world. So, a lot of people are getting to know me and see that my style’s an exciting style and that I bring action.

“I don’t think anyone is lining up to fight me. All those top guys, they know who I am. They know that I’m a tough fight for them so I’ve got to keep knocking at the door, keep beating the guys put in front of me so I can get into a position where they have no choice but to fight me.”

Pauldo is ranked No. 11 with the WBC at lightweight. He knows what’s at stake and is fully aware that Colombia’s Theran is 20-1 (14 KOs) and has his own ambitions.

“It’s very motivating for me, to step in there with someone with a great record as him and to get to go out there and dominate,” Pauldo added. “Me going out and beating guys like this, they have no choice but to give me a crack at the top guys, so it’s very exciting to go out there, get the opportunity to showcase my skills.

“The type of victory is just as important as the victory, so in camp I just push myself hard, keep perfecting my skills so I can go out and shine. I know that fans and people want to see knockouts, they want to see action, so I just follow the gameplan, push myself in training camp and it’s not too much pressure on me. As long as I keep pushing myself, the victory will come and it will be in great fashion.”

Pauldo has not had things easy.

He lost a split decision to Miguel Madueno in February 2024, also on ProBox TV, but said he has enjoyed his activity on the channel.

“It’s making me become more of a seasoned fighter, seeing different styles and being in there with tough guys who are going to try to win,” Pauldo said. “You’ve got a fighter like that on the other side of the ring, it pushes you in camp and it makes you sharp. That’s what I need to get to that next level.”

Pauldo hopes his career trajectory goes only one way, starting with Theran. Going the WBC route could mean an eventual run-in with Shakur Stevenson, should the three-division champion remain at the weight. Also appealing is a clash down the road with newly crowned WBO titleholder Abdullah Mason, the youngest male boxer to hold a major belt at just 21 years of age.

“It’s no particular fighter but the Abdullah Masons, the Shakur Stevensons, those guys have got the belts, those are the guys that I want,” said Pauldo. “I want to take on those guys and I want to take those belts.”

What's this sneaking a political ad into the show?

One judge saw it 96-94 in favor of Yaqubov, one scored it 97-93 for Chacon, and the deciding judge had it 95-95 a draw.

97-93 Chacon was criminal. Maybe, Chacon won 4 rounds but I gave him 3.
