Sean McComb Ready To Make Up For Lost Time On Monaco Bill

Sean McComb finally has the chance to make up for 18 months worth of lost time.

Since coming out on the wrong end of a controversial split decision defeat to Arnold Barboza Jr. in April of 2024, McComb has had to sit, watch and wait for another meaningful opportunity.

Finally, this summer, the Irish southpaw was given the news that as long as he notched up a win on a GBM Promotions show in September, it was highly likely that he would land a spot on Matchroom’s December 6 card in Monte Carlo.

The man standing between McComb (20-2, 5 KOs) and a return to the big stage was undefeated but unproven Welshman, Ben Crocker.

Things didn’t start well. Midway through the opening round, McComb was deposited on the canvas by a massive left hook.

It is no exaggeration to say that the 33-year-old’s entire career hung in the balance as he listened to the referee’s eight count but McComb didn’t allow those thoughts to infiltrate his mind.

He got up, crept his way back into the fight and eventually boxed his way to a 10-round unanimous decision.

Now, he is just days away from a 10-round fight with unbeaten Monacan, Hugo Micallef (11-0, 3 KOs). The fight will be streamed by DAZN.

“I immediately just gathered my thoughts and the first thing I thought of was, 'I won't make that mistake again. I won't come out high again. I won't be caught on the way out again.'” McComb told The Ring.

“I don't think I really put a foot wrong after that. Each round, as it went on, I felt like I was growing into the fight. It was a new experience for me but I stayed very composed.

“When I got up onto my feet I was not hurt one bit but it was a good knockdown. I mean, he caught me flush. I was surprised myself that there was no daze. There was no dizziness. I just gathered myself and thought, 'I won't make that mistake again' and I don't think I did.”

Fighting Micallef at the glamorous Salle des Étoiles in Monaco is the polar opposite to grinding out a must win decision over Crocker at Sheffield’s Park Community Arena but McComb believes that it is exactly that type of experience that will prove the difference this weekend.

Micallef boxed internationally as an amateur and has fought around the world since he turned professional in 2021. The 27-year-old has never been beyond eight rounds and McComb represents a giant leap in his calibre of opposition.

“He probably boxed at a higher level than Ben in terms of amateur boxing. He boxed in the world qualifiers, Olympic qualifiers and he boxed at an elite level around the circuit which helps you develop but, when it comes to professional boxing, I don't think he holds half the experience I have,” McComb said.

“It’s up to me now to just turn it on and really flick the switch on my performance and just really, really put it on the night, especially with him being a hometown fighter. He'll have a lot of support there I imagine and I'm just fully focused. I've had a great camp.”

McComb has experienced just how harsh the sport of boxing can be. He produced the best performance of his career against Barboza but rather than giving him a foothold in the world rankings, it resulted in him being exiled.

Lots of fighters in McComb’s position would snatch at their opportunity against Micallef or box with a sense of desperation. McComb isn’t going to allow the occasion to affect his mindset or performance.

He is confident that as long as he boxes to his strengths, he will score a crucial win and set himself up for a delayed assault on the world scene.

“I think it's very important for me to focus on me and what I do. My team needs to just focus on what I can do best and it's up to him to try and figure a way around it,” he said.

“I feel like I can box in a universal style. I can do a bit of everything. I can go in close. I can go forward. I can box on the back foot. I can change angles on punches, head, body. I've got a great variation and I've got a great boxing IQ.

“Feints are going to be very important in this fight. My lead hand, my jab is going to be very important - as it is every fight - and distance control. I’ll force the mistakes from him and I'll make him pay.”

Peter McGrail: I believe I'm a great fighter, you've only seen snippets of my ability

LIVERPOOL, England - This time last year, Peter McGrail was finalising preparations for a high profile fight with European junior featherweight champion, Dennis McCann, on the undercard of the unified heavyweight title rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury.

McCann’s late removal from the card due to an adverse finding in a pre-fight drug test meant that McGrail ended up beating the talented substitute, Rhys Edwards, over 10 rounds at super featherweight. It was a very solid win but earned him a fraction of the recognition or reward that beating McCann would have.

In June, McGrail agreed to take on his undefeated British rival Shabaz Masoud. Three weeks before the fight, Masoud withdrew through injury and McGrail was given the thankless task of fighting the awkward Ionut Baluta.

He kept his mind on the job and succeeded where a number of his fellow Brits had failed by beating the hard Romanian.

On December 6, McGrail (12-1, 6 KOs) and Masoud (14-0, 4 KOs) are scheduled to meet in Monte Carlo. The European junior bantamweight title will be on the line.

Experience will have taught McGrail not to count his chickens but the 29-year-old Liverpudlian can’t wait to finally get one of his British rivals in the ring.

“I'm really excited for this fight,” McGrail told The Ring.

“It’s a main event in Monte Carlo and it’s for the European title. It’s a big one, I’m feeling great in the gym and can't wait to get over there.

“It's the biggest fight of my life to date and it's going to be a great night come December 6th.”

Masoud is a slick, clever fighter who is capable of walking opponents into traps but McGrail represented Great Britain at the 2020 Olympic Games and spent years fighting at the highest level as an amateur. The fight could easily become a high stakes chess match.

Surprisingly, the two have never sparred and although McGrail hasn’t spent hours studying Masoud, he does know enough to respect him.

“I haven't watched too much of him over the years,” he said. “I know he's been about for years the same as me, all through the amateurs and he's boxed for years like myself. He's a very good fighter but I believe I'm a great fighter.”

McGrail is an undoubted talent who has rebounded well from the shock of being knocked out by unheralded American, Ja’rico O’Quinn, two years ago.

McGrail had dropped the Michigan native twice and comprehensively outboxed him before being caught by a single right hand.

He rebounded as well as possible from the shock defeat and has reeled off four straight wins over good opposition.

When he first turned professional, McGrail was widely touted as a surefire future world champion and there remains the definite feeling that he has yet to show exactly what he is capable of. Beating Masoud would secure him his first major title and move him an important step closer to world class.

“In certain fights they've seen little snippets but there's a lot more to come and it's down to me to show that,” he said.

“I don't think it's anything down to the opposition. It’s down to yourself and I'm feeling great in the gym.

“Not much has altered in my game, just improvements. There’s always improvements to be made. No one's the perfect fighter in or out of the ring so there's a lot of improvements that I've been doing and I can't wait to show them.”

Pat McCormack finally 'in the groove' after stop-start spell

Pat McCormack believes he has finally found his groove in 2025 after a nightmare spell left him as one of British boxing’s forgotten men.

Following his silver medal at the delayed 2020 Olympics, many expected McCormack to go on to become a professional world champion eventually.

He made a good start to that quest, racking up three wins inside the first eight months of his career before two stoppage victories in the first half of 2023 had marked him out as one of Britain’s most exciting newbie pros.

However a 13-month injury-induced lay-off slammed the brakes on his progress and he managed just one outing in the whole of 2024.

On Saturday night in Monaco, McCormack faces British welterweight champion Conah Walker over 12 rounds at Salle des Etoiles live on DAZN. And, after stoppage wins over Robbie Davies Jr and Miguel Parra already in 2025, it means he will manage three outings in the same year for the first time since he turned professional.

“I feel like I’ve got into a groove now and found my rhythm,” McCormack said from Monaco.

“I think that has been reflected in my performances too. Obviously, my last fight was probably my best performance, but it was the best fight I've had so far. I've always said when the level goes up, I'll go up, so that's what happened. I feel like you’re starting to see some glimpses of me at my best but there is plenty more to come.

“Activity was the key, that's the only thing we were missing. Obviously, I was out for a little bit with an injury, but we're back now and we've had a good year this year and we're going to finish it strong.”

It is amazing to think that McCormack (8-0, 6 KOs), is still in single figures for professional outings, despite being 30 years old. Even so, he is 15th with the IBF and right up at No. 4 with the WBA.

“I’m only eight fights in but I feel far more established than that really,” he adds. “I had 160 amateur fights. I had six World Series of Boxing fights, which are five round fights with smaller gloves.

“I beat people who went on to win world titles in WSB, beat some people in the top ten, so I've had that experience. I feel like I'm a lot further ahead than my record suggests.”

Due to British Boxing Board of Control rules, Walker’s British title will not be on the line in Monte Carlo but both men know victory will have huge ramifications for their world title chances in a division with four different champions.

On the British title, McCormack said: “Belts are nice but we fight for money. I know I just need to win to get my positioning right.

“If I keep winning then I could be knocking on the door by next year. We’ve got the right promoter behind us and the right team around us so when the time is right, the fights will be getting made. I take it one fight at a time, keep getting wins, keep looking good and then everything else will fall into place.”

His promoter Eddie Hearn, who signed him straight out of the Olympics, has no plans to wait around with McCormack should he beat Walker, another Matchroom fighter.

“Pat is 30 now so he needs to get a move on,” Hearn told The Ring. “There is no point in holding him back now, he’s in his absolute prime.

“He needs to get a move on and that’s why we have made this fight with Conah. Pat had a good win last time and has built some good momentum and now if he wins this fight he can go into spring/summer and be involved in a final eliminator for the world title.

“But winning here is no given. We know how much talent he has but we have no idea how tough Pat McCormack is. We have no idea how good his chin is at that level. But what I do know is, he's a world-class talent and someone that we believe will go on and become a world champion, even in a division like this."

press conference quotes

Shabaz Masoud
“Alhamdulillah,” said Masoud. “All praise is to God. I worked my way up to this kind of position. Alhamdulillah, I’m ready. More than ready for a fight like this. I’m going to show everyone what time it is.”

“I’ve been in the gym for the whole year. Even when I had that injury I was still in the gym working out all the things. You can ask anyone in the team. I’m a bit of a gym rat. I’m always in the gym. I live the life. Alhamdulillah.”

Peter McGrail
Note: The audio cut out during the time that McGrail spoke and much of what he said was inaudible. Below is the only audible quote of his from the press conference.

“I’ve been working so hard this camp,” said McGrail. “I’m up against a very, very good fighter and I’m in the shape of me life. You’re all going to see that Saturday night.”

In fairness, Balaz has a win over a guy that Fisher beat. I watched a few of his fights and he comes to win, throwing shots, while still being very limited. I'm not saying he's going to win, but he'll give it a go.
