The WBC will figure into this also as it announced last week that an investigation is under way. So the WBC and NYSAC both reviewing the matter. This is a mandatory title fight so only will proceed if WBC approves also.

NYSAC says Subriel Matias' title defense can proceed Jan. 10 because Ostarine traces are low

The Subriel Matias-Dalton Smith title fight could proceed Jan. 10 as planned pending review and further testing of the WBC junior welterweight titleholder, the New York State Athletic Commission said in a Tuesday statement to The Ring.

Matias delivered an adverse analytical finding Nov. 9 following a VADA test. Under World Anti-Doping Agency guidelines, Ostarine is classified as a non-threshold substance. Therefore, any detectable amount triggers an adverse analytical finding.

The NYSAC, however, considers the presence of Ostarine "abornomal at levels greater than 0.01 ng/ml. Matias' A- sample was measured at 0.085 ng/ml, which is below the threshold. The NYSAC said: "Matias has been cooperative with the Commission thus far regarding this matter, and is subject to additional testing and review.”

"The New York State Athletic Commission is aware that Mr. Matías, who is currently licensed, has received an adverse analytic finding from VADA concerning an out of competition test. The reported concentration was below the applicable threshold used by multiple jurisdictions, including Nevada, California, and New York.
“In accordance with Commission regulations, all licensees must comply with any medical examinations and laboratory testing required by the Commission, and the results of out of competition testing administered by VADA are appropriately considered when determining fitness to compete in New York State. …
“The Commission is closely monitoring the situation, will review the results of all additional ongoing testing, and is in communication with relevant parties regarding the VADA report. As the matter is under review, no further comment will be made by the Commission at this time.”

Matias, a 33-year-old Puerto Rican, is The Ring’s No. 2 boxer at 140 pounds. Matias (23-2, 22 KOs) became a two-time junior welterweight titleholder when he scored a thrilling majority-decision victory over Alberto Puello in July in New York on the undercard of The Ring III.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman announced after The Ring broke the news of the adverse finding that it had begun "the investigation process as per the Clean Boxing Program Protocol."

“I have spoken to our champion Subriel and his Promoter Mr. [Juan] Orengo, and they have expressed their absolute availability and cooperation as the process unfolds.”

England’s Smith (18-0, 13 KOs) is The Ring’s No. 7 junior welterweight. He was installed as a slight betting underdog vs. Matias in a virtual coin-flip fight. Matias’ lone defeat came in June 2024 vs. Liam Paro via unanimous decision in a major upset.

Ostarine is the same banned substance Ryan Garcia tested positive for following his win over Devin Haney in April 2024. The NYSAC, the same commission with oversight of Matias-Smith, suspended Garcia for one year and overturned the victory to a no-contest.

Ostarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator that attaches to proteins in the body and effectively tells muscles to grow. It is used to aid performance by helping athletes build muscle mass and enhance their rate of fat loss and also to increase stamina and recovery ability.

It has been on WADA's banned list since 2008 and in 2022 was listed by the organization as an anabolic agent.

Lucian Bute tested positive for Ostarine in 2016 following a draw with Badou Jack in their WBC super middleweight title fight. The result was changed to a DQ win for Jack.

Amir Khan was handed a two-year ban by UKAD after he tested positive for Ostarine following his sixth-round TKO loss to Kell Brook in 2022.

Subriel Matias: ‘Everyone who spat in the air… it’s going to fall in your face’

Subriel Matias has taken note of those who’ve branded him as a cheater.

An investigation is ongoing regarding an adverse finding from a drug testing sample provided by the current WBO 140lbs titlist ahead of his mandatory defense against England’s Dalton Smith. The two are currently due to meet on January 10 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

As previously reported by Boxing Scene, Puerto Rico’s Matias, 23-2 (22 KOs), tested positive for trace amounts of the banned substance Enobosarm (Ostarine). Boxing Scene’s report from November 20 noted the possibility of the fight still moving forward given his level - 0.085 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) - was below the minimum threshold (0.1 ng/mL) that New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) would consider an abnormal finding.

That didn’t prevent several outlets and many more fans and outside observers from suggesting the fight was in jeopardy while branding the two-time 140lbs titlist as a drug cheat.

“God's mercy has taken away my flowers. So, everyone who spat upwards, take note,” Matias cautioned his detractors. “Put on an umbrella because it's going to fall in your face.

“I've never needed to cheat.”

A statement provided by NYSAC officials confirmed BS’s previous report that – while they are still fully examining the matter – the fight is likely to move forward. WBC officials are also monitoring the situation given its title is at stake, and also in accordance with the sanctioning body’s Clean Boxing Program.

Matias and his promoter, Juan Orengo of Fresh Productions, have fully cooperated with the investigation and have even requested the testing of the boxer’s “B” sample.

For now, Matias remains in camp and continues to prepare for the first defense of his second title reign. The former IBF 140lbs beltholder claimed the WBC strap in a thrilling majority decision over previously unbeaten Alberto Puello on July 12 in Queens, New York.

Matias was immediately joined in the ring by Sheffield’s Smith, 18-0 (13 KOs), as it was common knowledge that the unbeaten Brit was owed an immediate title shot against the winner.

Smith will enter his first career title fight and also make his U.S. debut.

Despite prior interest from Turki Alalshikh and Riyadh Season, who funded the July 12 show, the two sides failed to reach terms which triggered a purse bid. Fresh Productions outbid Matchroom Boxing – Smith’s promoter – to obtain the rights to the attractive matchup.

Initial plans called for the fight to tentatively take place in mid-to-late December in Matias’ native Puerto Rico. Fresh Productions immediately shifted gears and decided the bout was better suited for early 2026 in the greater New York City region.

Ironically, the same NYSAC officials were forced to rule on Ryan Garcia’s drug testing scandal for the same substance, following his 12-round bout with Devin Haney last April – also at Barclays Center.

Garcia initially won a majority decision but not Haney’s WBC 140lbs title since he badly blew weight. Things went from bad and bizarre to much, much worse when he produced multiple positive tests for Ostarine - and far beyond the minimum threshold - for which he was met with a one-year-suspension.

Garcia’s team went on a public relations campaign, claiming contamination and largely resorting to gaslighting in a failed effort to clear the boxer’s name.

Matias has never previously tested positive for a banned substance and – given his explosive knockout power – has long served as a favorite among the sport’s cult level.

“The day I try to cheat, God willing, He will destroy me and reduce me to nothing in my life,” insisted Matias. “God is faithful.”

Subriel Matias Stands Firm, Proclaims Innocence Over Failed Drug Test

Subriel Matias believes that his faith in the man above will work in his favor.

The Ring’s No. 2 ranked junior welterweight turned in an adverse analytical finding for Ostarine, stemming from his November 9 VADA drug test distributed by the New York State Athletic Commission.

The amount found in his system, however, was below the allowed level of 0.1 nanograms per milliliter. Matias’ levels came in at 0.085.

Upon hearing the news, Matias (23-2, 22 KOs) took to social media to proclaim his innocence.

“The day I try to cheat, I become nothing in my life,” Matias said on his Instagram account. “God is faithful, blessings.”

Matias feels vindicated, but he isn’t necessarily out of the woods just yet.

The current WBC 140-pound belt holder is scheduled to return to the ring on January 10 in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center against Dalton Smith. Those plans, of course, were in jeopardy. But, according to the commission, his upcoming fight and championship status could remain intact.

"Matias has been cooperative with the Commission thus far regarding this matter, and is subject to additional testing and review,” The Commission wrote previously. “The New York State Athletic Commission is aware that Mr. Matías, who is currently licensed, has received an adverse analytical finding from VADA concerning an out of competition test.

“The Commission is closely monitoring the situation, will review the results of all additional ongoing testing, and is in communication with relevant parties regarding the VADA report. As the matter is under review, no further comment will be made by the Commission at this time.”

Should Matias be found guilty, he could suffer the same fate as Ryan Garcia. The popular welterweight contender tested positive for Ostarine following his April of 2024 win over Devin Haney in New York. That very commission overturned his victory to a no-contest and suspended Garcia for one year.

Shameless. This is a guy who has killed another boxer in the ring.

The fact that it was a low concentration is an anomaly. It was in his system, he took it, he shouldn't be allowed to fight. The game is tripping over itself to award these cheats.

Doubts should be cast upon ALL of his previous fights.

Subriel Matias 'not guilty' say WBC; fight with Dalton Smith goes ahead

It was today confirmed by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman that the January 10 contest for the junior welterweight title between Subriel Matias and Dalton Smith will go ahead despite the former failing a VADA test.

Ostarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator, one known to boost testosterone and endurance, and was found to have been in Matias’ system following a test that was conducted on November 9.

Matias will be placed on probation for one year and undergo further testing – at his cost – between now and the contest. Sulaiman declared they were confident that the positive test was a consequence of contaminated supplements. Despite the 'probation' he will still be permitted to fight Smith at Brooklyn's Barclays Center.

“He is not guilty, he has not been found at any level of consuming performance enhancing drugs,” Sulaiman said before adding that his organisation's Clean Boxing Program required updating due to the amount of supplements on the market that contain substances that are on the WADA banned list.

The winner of Matias, 23-2 (22 KOs), versus Smith, 18-0 (13 KOs), will be ordered to face mandatory contender, Alberto Puello.

Meanwhile, on December 6, the WBC interim title is at stake when Isaac Cruz takes on Lamont Roach.

There is no consistency among the sanctioning organizations and the various commissions, which does the sport absolutely no good and drives fans crazy.

Yeah, a russian, died a few days after being stopped. Boxing is in the gutter right now, look at this card tonight. Co headline, 1 bout scraped for another failed drug test, other headliner misses weight and instead of punishing him the wbc have put a belt on line from higher weight class.

I think GGG earned the right to be above suspicion. One weight entire career, no pull outs, no fails, no sudden drop off or overnight improvements, just a steady decline with age. Good physique but never changed from turning pro to reitrement.

Undercards set for Subriel Matias-Dalton Smith on Jan. 10

The WBC confirmed at its annual convention last week that Subriel Matias will defend its 140-pound title against Dalton Smith on January 10.

The fight had been in doubt after the junior welterweight champion failed a VADA test for Ostarine last month.

Now that the event will go ahead, Fresh Productions announced its undercard that will take place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

In the co-feature, fringe junior welterweight Alfredo Santiago (17-2, 8 KOs) will face unbeaten Hendri Cedeno (16-0, 12 KOs) in a scheduled 10-round contest with two WBO regional belts on the line.

Two-time IBF bantamweight titlist Emmanuel Rodriguez (22-3, 13 KOs) will also snap 20 months of inactivity when the former champion returns against Fernando Diaz (16-6-1, 6 KOs) in a 10-round scheduled bantamweight fight.

Elsewhere, in a meeting of former junior bantamweight title challengers Jeyvier Cintron (13-1, 6 KOs) will face Jonathan Rodriguez (25-2-1, 17 KOs) over 10 rounds. Nestor Bravo (23-1, 16 KOs) will face Pedro Campa (37-4-1, 25 KOs) in a 10-round junior welterweight bout as well.

Rounding out the show, unbeaten featherweight Keith Colon (8-0, 8 KOs) faces Alberto Guevara (28-8, 13 KOs) and Jahanzeb Rizwan (1-0, 1 KO) will take on an opponent to be determined.

Breaking: Per multiple sources with direct knowledge of the test results, Subriel Matias’ B sample was also positive for Ostarine but was, as expected & how it should be, the same as his A — below the 0.1 ng per milliliter threshold for punishment in NY so Smith fight remains on.
