- Don't know why Elmo can't figure out what happened.

After this fight, Ray revealed in his first autobio what has already be discussed, ie Duran had been partying hardy and ballooned to over 200lbs. Team Ray offered Duran a record purse with a short training time figuring to make weight he would have to near kill himself and they were right

Dran made weight, and as he stepped off the scales, he was thrown a whole grapefruit by one his team that he scarfed down whole whereupon he was thrown another that he perished. He then went next door and polished off a whole steak dinner before retiring to his suite where he ordered another steak dinner. I had a huge appetite back then, but Duran would've dwarfed me.

Leonard ran and popped for the rematch instead of going toe to toe the first fight where he had no choice when Duran near KOed him early the first fight while going toe to toe.

All that chasing led to Duran's stomach dumping into his bowels when droning Cosell infamously made up "No Mas." What Duran actually said in Spanish to the Mexican Ref was "I'm not fighting that clown," dismissing him with a wave of his glove.

What NJ Commish Randy Gordan was witness to when Duran when he was rushed into his training room: the prompt Hue and Cry and Stink as Duran sank his misery down the commode.

Now Duran was embarrassed to say the least, but Leonard was so miffed at being dismissed like the school boy he was to Duran he delayed the trilogy until it was irrelevant, and even then he was still running...The End save someone will butcher history again... :TU:

Total nonsense. Really liked the part where somehow it was Leonard who delayed the third fight. If Duran would have stayed at 147, he would have got a 3rd fight with Leonard sooner or later and he knew that. Instead, he moved out of the weight class. He knew he was not going to beat Leonard again.

According to Freddie Brown, Duran didn't have any stomach problems.

- Duran stomach was magnificent.

His Bowels refused to cooperate. Unbelievable in this day and age Boxing fans are still refusing to see the point's being polished atop of their noggins...only in boxing... :TU:

It also really bothered him that Leonard was outboxing the hell out of him.

Duran was in training by mid-September; it's documented in newspaper articles from that time. He didn't have a short or abbreviated camp. Freddie Brown stated in 1984- just prior to the Hearns-Duran bout- that he told Duran to say he was suffering from cramps in the Leonard rematch; Brown admitted it wasn't true. If Randy Gordon is correct about Duran having bowel problems in the locker room right after the bout it raises the question as to why Brown would admit on record that he came up with the lie about cramps. Is Gordon corroborating a lie ?

Yes, Leonard was out boxing and frustrating Duran but Freddie Brown's admission to lying is very curious.

Rat Arcel also said that Duran just quit and that is all there was to it. The rest is just crybaby excuses. We could do this with every fight if we wanted to, but people don't do that. Just the excuses for their guy.

He quit because he saw the bull crap between the lines. Not because he had stomach cramps. He got the raw deal of everything. I would have quit, too.

Finally we agree on something. Duran turned his back on the biggest fight of his life and he was never the same again.

Interesting stat on Duran's record I thought some of you might be intrigued to know.

On Duran's record are 16 losses. 13 of those 16 losses came against American Fighters.

I thought elmer "America Got to be the Greatest" salsa would like that stat

He has a record of 39-13 against Americans overall.

Interesting stat. I watched from ringside here in Chicago when he fought Jeff Lanas. I thought Lanas beat him too.

The biggest fight of his life was in Montreal. Do not change the script.

The second fight was nothing but greed and betrayal. Thanks to Carlos Eleta and Don King.

Yes, much of this was in Gordon's article. Well remembered.

Duran simply could not apply the pressure like he did in the first fight, not without a proper training camp and not just weightwatchers. He was a fool to meet Leonard on those terms and he paid the price.

But Eleta and King didn't quit in the ring, that was, we both agree, Roberto Duran.

The second fight was lack of preparation turning a great fighter into a coward.

Duran is a great fighter. Nothing can ever change that.

Duran quit in the 2nd Leonard fight. Quit like a dog. Nothing can ever change that either.

DURAN quit. Not Carlos Eleta. Not Don King. Roberto Duran quit. He quit because he was frustrated that Leonard had improved for their rematch while he didn't. He quit because he was getting embarrassed. He quit because he didn't want no more of what was happening to him. He quit because he didn't train for it like Leonard did, and he didn't come to win. Leonard did.

The fight was still close in the judges scorecards even though Sugar Ray Leonard was "fighting his fight".

I think that Roberto Duran quit because he saw the BULL CRAP that everything was against him. His own manager Carlos Eleta betrayed him. And also his own promoter Don King did the damage.

Duran could have fainted in that ring by the low and lack of preparation time he had. He could have died in that ring because he was not on his optimal physical shape. He only trained to lose weight. He asked for more time and King declined the postponement. Ain't he was the champion? Duran got fuuucked in the azz by his own people.

If Sugar Ray would have asked for more time, they would have given him time. He was America's Darling. America could not say no to him. But, Duran didn't get the time nor the respect that he wanted.

It's sad because it took away Leonard's performance in a way. Leonard knew that he didn't beat Duran. It was Eleta and King that beat him.

What's sad is your refusal to accept reality on this fight. Everyone lost except Duran according to you.

I can tell you what elmer will say since he has talked about Duran's career a billion times. He does actually count one of Duran's 16 losses. The one to DeJesus. There are excuses for the other 15.

You don't want to accept reality. The REALITY of all was that Roberto Duran was hookwinded, sold, betrayed and humiliated by his own greedy manager and his own promoter.

It was a BEAUTIFUL STRATEGY by the Sugar Ray Leonard management team. The REALITY was that these greedy promoters wanted a third fight for much more money. It would have been a mega million payday for both fighters if Duran lose, about $15 to $20 million for each fighter.

The PROBLEM was that Duran quit and screwed up the negotiations. That No Mas was nothing but revenge and it was to accommodate Sugar Ray Leonard and not Roberto Duran. It was not about sportsmanship nor fighting on even terms. It was as WICKED and SAD at the same time.

Esteban De Jesus didn't pay Roberto Duran's manager to win the fight. He never flew to Panama City to do the dirty work. He didn't had a promoter to do the thing possible.

But, Sugar Ray Leonard did paid Carlos Eleta. You got to go to another country to pay someone's manager is as wicked as adultery. There was no righteousness in that No Mas. Everything was shady and creepy at the same time.
