Newly available clips: Cerdan, Joe Brown, LaMotta, Humez, Brian London, Villemain, Downes, Robinson, and others

From the 1930s to the early 1960s, newsreels were typically shown in U. S. movie theaters as part of the entertainment. Hearst Movietone News was a leading newsreel operation. The Hearst newsreel material has been donated to the UCLA Film and Television Archive, which, incidentally, has a significant collection of boxing bouts that aired on the DuMont television network.

Some of the Hearst newsreel material is now available for free on the Internet. In what appear to be outtakes, there are snippets of boxing bouts of various sorts. There are a number of clips of amateur bouts, particular from New York City Golden Gloves competitions. There are some weigh-ins and publicity items. There are also brief highlights from the following bouts:

Robert Villemain TKO 9 Egisto Peyre (Paris, 1947)
Marcel Cerdan KO 2 Giovanni Manca (Paris, 1948)
Hein ten Hoff KO 5 Arno Koelblin (Berlin, 1948)
Hans Stretz D 12 Gerhard Hecht (Berlin, 1950)
Jake LaMotta W15 Tiberio Mitri (New York, 1950)
Gene "Tiger" Jones KO 5 Conny Rux (Berlin, 1950)
Jake LaMotta KO 15 Laurent Dauthuille (Detroit, 1950)
Conny Rux TKO 7 Giorgio Milan (Hamburg, 1951)
Charles Humez KO 7 Emile Delmine (Paris 1951)
Joe Brown KO 1 Orlando Echevarria (Havana, 1958)
George Chuvalo KO 12 Yvon Durelle (Toronto, 1959)
Dick Richardson TKO 8 Brian London (Porthcawl, 1960)
Terry Downes W 10 Ray Robinson (London, 1962)
Marcel Cerdan, Jr. W 6 Alexis Scheid (Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1964)
Piero del Papa WDQ Norbert Grupe (Berlin, 1965)*
*This bout is not in the BoxRec database.

The visual quality of this material is outstanding, with restoration work done through a contribution from a foundation associated with Hewlett-Packard founder David Packard. Some clips are silent, and there are some soundtracks. There is a great deal of non-boxing material in the collection, and UCLA plans to post more material as the restoration process is completed.

Here's where to find it: newsreels.net . Use "boxing" as the search term.
