Charlie Magri Dementia Fundraiser

Post by jamesmcdonnell »

Just saw this pop up on facebook.

Charlie has been diagnosed with dementia.

I spent a fair bit of time with Charlie when I worked on him with his autobiography, and felt that he was a guy who had not really been treated too well by boxing, and hadn't made anywhere near the money he should have.

He had a pub, but lost that in the end, and then spent many years, at quite an advanced age in demolition.

I think the book came out in 2007, and even back then, Charlie's recall wasn't very good, I had to watch his fights with him a he had little recollection of who he fought and when, and there was a lot of detail of his life he had to ask his wife Tina about as he simply couldn't remember.

Charlie's life after boxing, like many, has been pretty rough, for a guy who left so much of himself in the ring.

Sad to hear. The fact you say his memory wasn’t great in 2007 when he was only around 50 years old is yet more evidence of the damage boxing can cause.

Yeah, more than likely that was pre-dementia, and was just damage caused by a long career in boxing.

Yeah, I saw this last week and contributed, felt the right thing to do, as some of my earliest boxing memories are of Charlie Magri, including the shocking newspaper back page photo when he finally lost his unbeaten record, right on the cusp of a world title shot. So I was forever willing him on in the following years, to get over the line.

I guess he took too many punches, boxing news was forever trying to get him to retire…at least Harry Mulan was… I don’t remember he went on noticeably too long, though allegedly broke into the big time by putting a past his prime Charlie in with the great Sot Chitalada, on ITV, but he gave it a great go in the first couple of rounds there.

I really hope he gets looked after here

To be fair, people get dementia all the time, 69 is on the young side, but not by much.

He took his fair share of lumps, but certainly there's plenty who took a lot more, and were still going strong at that age.

Dementia is a real lottery.

My aunt smoked like a fornicating chimney she passed away at 92, never stopped smoking for over 70 years, and only got dementia at around 90.

My mum quit smoking in her early 50's, and had dementia by 70.

The thing is though, Charlie should have made enough money to have been more financially secure, he was a big ticket seller, and was famous nationally, I guess in this day and age, he would have been a PPV fighter, because he was all action.

That's a very sad update on "Champagne" Charlie :verysad:

I visited Magri's pub with David Walker in 2005...and there was Charlie behind the bar !

Talk about being star struck :OhYes:
Magri came over to our table (he knew Dave well), but as a complete unknown he was surprisingly friendly to me and told me a story of when he boxed a tall Mexican boxer. That made my day sitting opposite a British boxing icon I'd watched on TV as a young lad.

Magri packed a hell of punch at Flyweight :bag:

Wishing Charlie all the best :box:

Scary thinking about the future...especially after a few years after boxing

Yeah, spent a lot of time at that pub, interviewed Charlie on and off for around 3 months to get the material together for the book. There was a lot of stuff had to be left out of the book for legal reasons and never made the final edit.

Charlie was quite bitter about his career overall, and I don't blame him. For all of Warren's detractors, which I've been among over the years, Charlie said that Frank paid him more for his fight with Chtilada than any other fight he had, and by a long way.

FW was always the best payer.
With them, for the undercard fighters you got a cheque.
Hearns usually paid cash but sometimes a cheque.
Everyone else was always cash.
And always on the night.
Apparently some of FWs bigger fighters needed to wait for their money, but he always paid the best.
A pal of mine fought on a little Maloney show, before Panix, got a cheque, which was unheard of then, it bounced!
