Just caught up on the fight on iPlayer.

I’m guessing the ref and and Simpson’s corner have some kind of money on him being dead before the age of 30. A stoppage loss after the second knockdown and probably Simpson comes back eventually to the level he is at now. After the shellacking that followed it’s probably taken years off his career.

The irony is that he, like Williamson, will benefit from a move up in weight..

The double irony is that the Lightheavy division is really tough at the moment.

tbf troy got beat by several guys in a row before this, not just kelly. even just months ago he got totally white washed and dropped multiple times by jahi tucker for example, who did a more throughouh job than kelly despite not being able to beat nick flaz or some other good prospect testers. i dont think that previous wins vs troy suddenly look anything that more impressive tbh.

moving up to 168 seems to have given him new life though, maybe draining himself too much way down at 154

ps i do think kelly is a very live dog despite what i said above, the win over tim flattered murta. he is good but not a monster. id recommend people go watch the grueling win he got over culcay before that, where his eye was smashed shut in a very competitive fight. though i do get the feeling he will be just a bit too hard in the end for jk but wouldnt surprise me at all if jk squeaks him a few points

Just caught up with this.

Simpson must've been caught in bed with the ref's wife.

That referee must be disciplined for that and taken off championship matches. That was an awful watch at the end, Simpson had nothing left long before it was stopped.
Cracking fight for the BBC though but I never want to hear that co-commentator again

What about Simpson’s corner?

If the ref ain’t gonna go the job, then why aren’t they?

Gumshield out. Flipping everywhere. He had over a minute left of the round. Defenceless. After the two KD’s it was surely over on the cards too.

They didn’t help him.

Yeah the refs are always in a tough position in the UK when the A side fighter is getting a hiding. The corrupt nature of the sport puts them in a position where they have to allow the A side to take far more punishment than is necessary at times. The ref looked like he didn't have a clue what he should be doing. Warrington vs Lara was another example of the A side guy taking too much and the ref not having a clue what to do. Cleverley Kovalev is a funny example too.

Poor Simpson even spat his gumshield out after the first (or maybe second, can’t remember now) to buy himself more time, and the ref didn’t even notice. Absolutely dreadful stuff.

The first knockdown, what is Simpson doing. It's a basic right left combo and he's just not good enough defensively. His attempts to tie up are very bad and he is caught with huge punches. I know Troy has shorter arms but if you're going to just stand there and get blasted while trying to tie up then you might as well just swing and try to make it a shootout. The ref should have been stopping it then when he was hurt before going down the second time. Certainly on being floored the second time. He gets up and I think his legs are not good enough despite him saying he's OK. Troy would be stopped already if it was him in this situation. He's then put face first on the floor with some clean punches and surely should be stopped now by the ref AND corner. He is being failed by his corner now. He's not even moving his head now and can't even bring his arms up. He's a sitting duck to be badly hurt but gets away with some cuffing shots putting him down and finally it's called off.

It's really bad for Simpson that he went through the brutal beatdown. Takes something out of him. He also fell apart off being caught with a simple 2-1 from range. His defence and chin are not good enough. Needs to work on his defence bigtime, for the sanctity of his health.

It reminded me of Tim Tszyu given a hiding against Murtazaliev in the same fashion. Nobody stopping the fight when it should have been stopped.

That was a great watch. Rematch was mentioned but can they not get a bigger payday for Troy with all the vacant belts?

What a win for Williamson, I wasn't enjoying the fight tbh, too scrappy, too much mauling from both guys especially Williamson although that's his style, making it ugly, Simpson was trying to at least get flurries off on the inside, Williamson was having success with the right hand, Simpson's work was a bit neater but Williamson just kept coming as he always does, finally found the breakthrough in the 10th reverse 1/2 dropped Simpson and he was out on his feet in the follow up, should've been stopped either by ref or corner, he was done, sure enough he was down again from a right, I was sure that was it but incredibly no, another right hand him down a 3rd time, amazingly it was allowed to continue before a last right had him down for the last time, Simpson too brave for his own good but the ref and corner were criminal, brilliant by Williamson
