Does anyone know when this tradition started ? It continues today with a short card.

Based on some quick Google "research," here's what I found:

The "tradition" of professional boxing on Christmas Day in Belgium isn't a long-standing national custom, but rather a more recent pattern largely associated with Belgian boxer Jean-Pierre Coopman, who fought on that specific day five times in the 1970s and 1980s.

In Belgium, the occurrence of Christmas Day fights is most notably linked to heavyweight boxer Jean-Pierre Coopman (nicknamed "The Lion of Flanders"), who fought on December 25 in the following years:

1972
1974
1976
1979
1980

Other professional boxers have also had Christmas Day bouts in Belgium, such as Tony Booth and Pat Barrett in the 1990s. However, these appear to be isolated events or part of a trend specific to certain promoters or individual fighters, rather than a deep-rooted historical tradition like the Christmas Day football matches in the UK.

Professional boxing matches on Christmas Day were a common occurrence in the U.S. and parts of Europe in the early 20th century, particularly before World War II, but the practice became rare in most countries after that period.

It's gone on in Belgium since at least the 1950's.

Obviously, my curiosity is now piqued. And Google research is ... well, just that, Google research. Maybe it's just me, but I do enjoy finding out about some of the "old time traditions" and their origins.
