Chris Kongo starched by 1-18 Elliot Eboigbe

Post by TheLeprechaun »

Fall from grace from when they were singing his praises on Sky for outboxing/running against Marku. Marku himself has legal trouble and we probably won't be hearing about him. I always thought he was pretty limited. Never expected Kongo to lose to this level of opposition in a KO1 although it has to be said that any boxer is susceptible to a KO1 loss if they get caught cold.

Although can't see how he got caught looks likely he was swinging and got caught by one, the way he is after stoppage could of carried on , I expect a quick rematch but Congo was definitely floored.

Ah it can happen , a quick rematch once mandatory ban is over and get the win , build again from there . Probably more of a chance of getting a shot at someone because they think he's vulnerable

You can see the punch here, that’s a seriously heavy shot - if that guy is a journeyman, they’re gonna be nervous about matching him after that one

seemed quite a fast count though to be fair

Poor matchmaking. Eboigbe had a 100% KO record going into this fight

Bit hard to see the state of Congo when he got up but seemed clear headed enough to argue stoppage, maybe he could of gone on, but ref is closest to make that decision.

And at one point I proclaimed that Florian Marku would be an undisputed welterweight champion :brick:

By the way, how often do things like this happen? A prospect or a semi prospect or a semi semi prospect loses to a journeyman? In the near past I can only recall Robeisy Ramirez and his debut catastrophe

There's been a few , sometimes it's a prospect that never was going to make it and that's it , or they learn from it and come again.

Paul Wesley starching Neville Brown 11-0 in a round , Brown would go on to win British title.
Darren Dyer was a Commonwealth Games gold medalist and looked a locked on big punching prospect, lost an early one on points to Del Bryan which can be excused but few fights later got sparked in a round by Trevor Mortimer and career never really recovered.
Kelcie Banks was the supposed star of the 1988 USA Olympic team, but lost by first round KO at the Olympics, he turned pro and his chin let him down in his second fight losing by KO again.

Yeh not very often, but another thread reminded me of Darnell Boone, a journeyman who flattened future world champ Adonis Stevenson in similar fashion.

Boones record isn't that bad. He also dropped Andre Ward very heavily. He lost a SD to Kovalev which was pretty close. I'm not familiar with him beyond some highlights so I can't make a solid analysis of him.

The list of who Boone fought between 2005 and 2015 is impressive, to say the least. It's filled with a ton of easily recognizable names and numerous future champions.

Sky were praising him after the Marku fight, but his stock has clearly fallen; Marku has legal issues so we likely won’t hear much about him, and Kongo losing by KO1 to that level of opposition is surprising, although any boxer can get caught cold and stopped early.

Boone is a strange one. Perhaps he could only get motivated for the very biggest fights.

Adding the late lamented Paul Wesley to this thread for his first round knockout of future British champ Neville brown.

Reminds me of Freddie Pendleton, who at the time was something like a 50-50 journeyman and they threw him in with rising star Tyrone Trice - Freddie knocked him out in one round in a big shock. .

Freddie eventually shook off the journeyman tag and went on to be a world champ, and has one hell of a lineup of names on his record.
Tyrone Trice very nearly won a world title too, losing to Simon Brown in one of the great fights of the 1990s
