Dunno, but if you thought Stanley Ketchel was " Aggressive".

Re: Terry McGovern-how good was he ?
They say this fight was a fix. If you watched that video without knowing anything about the fighters, it looks like a blowout in favour of Terry.
Boxing was banned in Chicago after this. Says a lot about the legitimacy of the fight.

How good was he? He was great. But this isn't the fight to use as proof. It sure seems suspicious to me.
the key is to concentrate on watching Gans alone a time or two. His overhand punches make it seem as if he's trying, but they are easy for McGovern to avoid. Plus, Gans has a way of letting shots loop around his neck. They look like they connected, but they did not. I can't claim credit for these observations, but once they were pointed out to me, I can't avoid seeing them.

I know, they're both supposed to be ATGs... but they sure don't look it in this footage!

i also watched the film before I looked it up in my copy of THE BIG BOOK OF BOXING (1987 EDITION)
and was surprised to read there that it was an 'ill-executed Fake".
Mc Govern punches were definately landing hard in round one.
It looked to me Gans was hit by some type of freak punch
a sliding left hook to the back of his head and upper neck(Rabbit punch)
the power of it continuing as it slide across rather then hit in one impact.
No way Gans would have been able to recover from it in 30 seconds
so was still dazed when round two started, (although Im not a doctor of course)

Looks like Terry McGovern had fought more "Tyson-esqe" then Mike Tyson himself !

BTW There is some rare footage of the 1903 re-enactment of the Terry McGovern vrs Young Corbett fight at 8:15 of the clip.

No evidence.
Wasn't the story that Gans threw the fight due to his manager, Al Herford, insisting on betting on him to lose, so he could make a bundle, something he had done before?
I did see clips of the fight and Gans went down like 7 times and honestly, at least 6 of them looked extremely suspect.
Given the above, the most dominant black fighter in that era and a lightweight gets blown away by a, albeit heavy punching natural featherweight McGovern with plenty of dubious knockdowns.....I dunno, man, a guy who went 20+ rounds with Battling Nelson several times and 15 with Sam Langford gets blown away in 2 by a Featherweight?
Does not resonate a legit.

In watching the film footage) Looks like a grazing left hook from Terry McGovern's to Gan's temple,
and it went all down-hill from there for Gans.

I'm sure the controversial nature of this would've been a lot more clear to see if you were ringside, and had a nice view for it. Hard to decipher anything from that era on video with the limitations of the film at that time.Caractacus wrote: ↑08 May 2025, 16:41 looked to me like Joe Gans had been 'ligitimally" KO'd ny Terry McGovern.
