Smith title fight on despite Matias adverse drug sample

Briton Dalton Smith's world-title challenge against WBC light-welterweight champion Subriel Matias remains on, despite the champion returning adverse drug-test findings.

The Puerto Rican tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine in a Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) out-of-competition test taken on 9 November.

A 'B' sample also returned an adverse finding, but the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) says the concentration detected was below the threshold used by major boxing jurisdictions, meaning the fight in New York on 10 January can proceed.

"The New York State Athletic Commission is aware that Mr Matias, who is currently licensed, has received an adverse analytic finding from VADA concerning an out of competition test," the commission told BBC Sport.

"The reported concentration was below the applicable threshold used by multiple jurisdictions, including Nevada, California, and New York."

The commission added that Matias has been cooperative but that the situation remains under review and he will be subject to additional testing.

It added: "At this time the fight is scheduled to proceed on 10 January 2026."

Ostarine, a non-steroidal drug used to support muscle growth, has been on the World Anti-Doping Agency's banned substance list since 2008.

Following the initial A-sample finding, the WBC said it had identified mitigating factors in Matias' case.

The sanctioning body indicated the adverse result was linked to the fighter's use of supplements known to carry a risk of Ostarine contamination, adding that the levels detected were low and consistent with accidental ingestion.

However, the organisation has placed him on a 12-month probation period.

The WBC also warned that any further positive test during the probationary period would result in an indefinite suspension, pending further investigation.

Sheffield's Smith, 28, has won all 18 of his professional bouts, and his team have said he will not pull out of the contest.

Matias, 33, has 23 wins and two defeats on his record.

WBC provide result of super-lightweight world champion Subriel Matías adverse findings

WBC World super-lightweight champion Subriel Matías update

On November 15, 2025, VADA notified WBC World Super Lightweight Champion Subriel Matías and the WBC of an adverse analytical finding consistent with the presence of Ostarine in a urine sample collected from him on November 9, 2025.

Several anti-doping result management authorities have set thresholds for the presence of Ostarine under which an Ostarine positive result is not considered an adverse finding.

Findings under the threshold are considered atypical, whereupon the athlete is cleared after a cursory review. For example, the New York State Athletic Commission, which is the jurisdiction where the upcoming Subriel Matías vs Dalton Smith WBC World Championship bout will take place, does not consider a concentration below 0.1 ng/ML to be an adverse finding. The reported concentration of Ostarine in Champion Matías’ sample was 0.085 ng/mL, which is below that threshold.

The WBC conducted an expedited but thorough investigation following the prescriptions of its Clean Boxing Program protocol.

Champion Matías and his team were fully cooperative with every aspect of the process. The process concluded with the WBC and champion Matías entering into an Adjudication Agreement which requires Champion Matías to be subjected to and comply with the following conditions:

A. Probation for one (1) year from the date of the sample collection;

B. Undergo additional random anti-doping testing during the probationary period at his own expense;

C. Participate in a nutrition education program designed and conducted by the WBC Nutrition Committee;

D. Participate in social responsibility activations such as visiting boxing gyms to speak about the dangers of consuming potentially contaminated nutritional supplements; and

E. Be suspended indefinitely without further inquiry if a sample collected from him results in an adverse finding during his probationary period.

Unfortunate, inaccurate, and speculative information was reported last week regarding Champion Matías when the results of his Sample B became available. It is important that the public recognizes that, in the anti-doping testing context, B Sample results are overwhelmingly the same as the A sample ones.

The contents of the A Sample container and those of the B Sample are exactly the same. The testing of the B Sample contents is just confirmatory of the A Sample one. The B Sample test results, therefore, do not represent a new or additional adverse finding nor a new violation of any rules.

During its annual convention, the WBC ruled to modify the Clean Boxing Program Protocol. The modifications are necessary due to the fact that there is a definite link between most of the adverse finding results and actual or alleged contamination of supplements boxers use. The WBC will publish and implement its new Clean Boxing Program Protocol starting in February of 2026.

Tricky one
Matias has better skills but has some miles on him
Smith well conditioned but limited and not varied in his ability

Sheffield star Dalton Smith leads Yorkshire boxers into the New Year

Dalton Smith will be the first of many Yorkshire boxing stars to fight in the New Year

Undefeated Dalton Smith kicks off the New Year with a world title fight, which will be the first outing of a busy schedule in 2026 for Yorkshire boxing stars.

Dalton Smith vs Subriel Matias

The undefeated Sheffield superstar Dalton ‘Thunder’ Smith (18-0, 13 KOs) challenges WBC world super-lightweight champion Subriel Matias (23-2, 22 KOs) at the Barclays Centre, Brooklyn, New York on January 10.

Smith wants to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Sheffield world titleholders Kell Brook, Naseem Hamed, Junior Witter, Johnny Nelson and Clinton Woods.

It’s a significant step up in quality for Smith, but the 28-year-old has been knocking at the door for some time now and has more than earned his chance at the green and gold title as the WBC #1.

Smith reached pole position by claiming the WBC Silver super-lightweight title against Jose Zepeda in March 2024 and defending the belt twice successfully.

The 33-year-old defending champion from Puerto Rico won his world title in his last fight wit Alberto Puello in July 2025. He won via mixed decision, the only victory of his 10-year pro career to go the distance after previously scoring all 22 of his wins via KO.

On the one hand, I was really pleased to see this is next week

on the other hand £40 pay-per-view - What madness is this? Why price it like that and ensure you’re going to get virtually no buys?

At this rate he probably wants to break even.

These kind of shows only do around 4k in the arena.

Using a big arena too.

Is Smith taking fans over?

Just after Xmas.

Ruthless-RKO wrote: 12 Jul 2025, 21:35 SUBRIEL MATIAS-DALTON SMITH WBC 140-POUND TITLE FIGHT ADDED TO RING IV NOV. 22 CARD

Subriel Matias will defend his WBC junior welterweight title against mandatory challenger Dalton Smith on The Ring IV card Nov. 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Puerto Rican Matias (23-2, 22 KOs) had just won the green and gold 140-pound belt from Alberto Puello (24-1, 10 KOs) via majority decision before HE Turki Alalshikh announced in the ring he would face Sheffield, England's Smith (18-0, 13 KOs) in four months' time.

The winner of Matias-Smith will fight Puello, The Ring's Mike Coppinger revealed on the broadcast.

Dominican Puello looked to have done enough to earn a decision win over Matias on The Ring III bill in Queens, New York City at Louis Armstrong Stadium.

The aggressive, come-forward work from Matias, however, was enough to win over the judges, who scored the bout 114-114, 115-113, 115-113 in his favour.

And now he'll fight Smith, the WBC No. 1 contender in what should be an all-action match-up on a card headlined by David Benavidez and Anthony Yarde.

Smith has fought twice this year, knocking out Walid Ouizza in a single round in January before dominating Mathieu Germain across 12 in April.

"You will fight [Smith] on the November card for the world title," Alalshikh told Matias in the ring following his victory over Puello, to which the 33-year-old replied: "You want an exciting fighter? I'm here."

Elsewhere on the Nov. 22 card, The Ring's fourth event, Brian Norman Jr will defend his WBO welterweight title against Devin Haney, Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez takes on Fernando Martinez in a 115-pound unification bout and Abdullah Mason clashes with Sam Noakes for the vacant WBO lightweight strap.

We’re really taking it on faith that Dalton can pull this off. Not that he can’t he’s clearly talented but so far he’s only proven himself a level or two below this. Looking forward to seeing how it goes! 🥊

This one has crept up, didn’t realise it’s so soon. Marias is dangerously with all the PED stuff. Really hope Smith wins. I hope he does, be good to have a clean athlete win, seems a really decent fella as does his Pa too.

It's a close one
Matias has skills, but Puello and Paro put him through the wars
How much has that taken out of him
Cant help but think that later rounds favour Smith

Yeah I guess so. It seems his promoters, fresh promotions, Probably went a bit mad, trying to secure the fight with a bid of nearly 2 mill. I think it’s clear they’re not gonna make a profit here. matchroom bid not much less, but I guess they would’ve looked at it as an investment in their man Dalton Smith, give him home advantage plus the winning combination of Howard foster, Marcus McDonnell and lee Every.

Emmanuel Rodriguez excited to start third 118-pound title tilt vs. Fernando Diaz

Former two-time bantamweight titleholder Emmanuel Rodriguez will snap a 20-month spell of inactivity when returning on Saturday.

The Puerto Rican will face battle-hardened Fernando Diaz (16-6-1, 6 KOs) in a scheduled 10-round contest on the undercard of Subriel Matias' WBC junior welterweight title defence vs. Dalton Smith at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

"It's truly a great fight to make my return to the ring," Rodriguez (22-3, 13 KOs) told The Ring.

"He's the perfect opponent, a good fighter, and this would be the path to my third world title. After January 10, there are good plans and that's why this fight is so important to me. Being on such a big stage as the Barclays Center, where Subriel will headline and defend his world title, is a big commitment for me and everyone."

The event will be broadcast live on PPV.com, from 8 p.m. ET/1 a.m. GMT.

His extended spell away from the sport has served as a good point to step away, reviewing his career before returning rejuvenated.

"First, I injured a rib in sparring," he shared. "Then I took some time off to rest, spend time with my family, and do the things I enjoy in my free time, but I'm back on January 10th."

In a bid to become a three-time bantamweight champion he enlisted none other than compatriot Roman "Rocky" Martinez, who also won three world titles at junior lightweight during a productive run from 2009-16.

"The only thing that's changed is my trainer, who is now Rocky Martinez," he continued. "Everything else remains the same. We have good chemistry. He's a very disciplined trainer and very demanding when it comes to training, but you'll see me in good physical and mental condition, which is the most important thing."

Martinez feels he can help Rodriguez match his feat.

"Working with Manny is truly wonderful. He's a two-time world champion with the experience, has demonstrated great talent and consistency in training," explained Martinez.

"He hasn't let me down; those who work with me, when they fail, don't come back. Manny is in top condition for the fight. He's 100 percent and we hope, God willing, for a decisive victory and to fight for a world title in 2026."

The 33-year-old remains steadfast in his desire to win another bantamweight world title.

"I'm going after my third world title," he said. "If I do, Rocky would like me to move up in weight, but it's like everything else, step-by-step. There are plans but first, I need to become a world champion for the third time."

Diaz turned professional in 2018, with the California native having fought largely in Mexico and across several American states.

He scored upset wins over previously-unbeaten pair Jan Salvatierra (KO5) and Lorenzo Smith (UD10) during a three-month spell between November and early February.

However, the 25-year-old has fallen short in subsequent fights against Yankiel Rivera (UD8), John Ramirez (SD10) and, most recently, Dominique Crowder (UD 10) on October 18.
