Dan Rafael reported that Torrez has accepted the order and both he and Sanchez have been given till December 17th to reach an agreement before the fight will go to purse bids.

Torrez was not available when initially asked due to an already booked "fight" against Salek.

I think it all depends on Sanchez's injury recovery. Either Sanchez is going to move in and out with quick combos to get a decision win in typical Cuban style or he's going to get KO'd for staying in the pocket for longer than he realising he is. His age doesn't particularly help that so I'd favour the latter outcome.

Frank Sanchez-Richard Torrez Jnr ordered for IBF title eliminator

Frank Sanchez is back at the negotiating table.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that the IBF has formally ordered a heavyweight title eliminator between Cuba’s Sanchez and California’s Richard Torrez Jnr. The two sides will have until December 17 to reach terms, though the process has proven problematic for much of the year.

Sanchez is promoted by Warriors Boxing and Ural Boxing promotions, and co-managed by Mike Borao and Lupe Valencia. Torrez Jnr has been with Top Rank since signing out of the amateurs following his silver medal haul during the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

IBF officials were in a position to move forward with the eliminator once Torrez submitted in writing his willingness to participate in the ordered contest. It was an improvement from his previous involvement in this ordeal, when Torrez’s team never responded to an earlier invitation from the sanctioning body.

Torrez, 14-0 (12 KOs), was already scheduled at the time to appear on a November 15 event co-promoted by Top Rank and Zanfer Boxing in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. It served as just the second fight of the year for the 26-year-old southpaw from Tulare, California, who earned a 1st round, injury stoppage of Poland’s Tomas Salek.

The bout came nine months after Torrez’s lone other appearance of the year, a 10-round, unanimous decision over Guido Vianello on April 5 in Las Vegas. It marked the first time that Torrez was forced to go to the scorecards as a pro. His two fights in 2025 marked his least active campaign since turning pro in 2022, having fought exactly four times in each of the past three years.

Still, his year was a hell of a lot more productive than the heavyweight he could potentially face next.

Sanchez, 25-1 (18 KOs), has literally waited all year to land a willing opponent in a bid to become the IBF mandatory challenger. Worse, he’s fought just once since a May 2024 stoppage defeat to Agit Kabayel in their WBC interim heavyweight title fight. His lone bout in that period came in a walkover knockout victory on February 22 in Tijuana, Mexico.

The rest of the year was spent watching the likes of Moses Itauma, Filip Hrgovic, Efe Ajagba and – most recently – former IBF titlist Daniel Dubois all decline on the chance to face Sanchez.

Torrez is one of at least five heavyweights who were in the mix at some point, only to ultimately decline to move forward with the process.

The latest step comes more than a week after former IBF heavyweight titlist Daniel Dubois, 22-3 (21 KOs), was withdrawn from the ordered match on the morning of a purse bid hearing. The session was already delayed by seven days at the request of Dubois and Queensberry Promotions, only to bail altogether.

Moses Itauma, Filip Hrgovic and Efe Ajagba – a former Sanchez opponent – have also declined to go the distance during these proceedings.

A rematch with Ajagba was actually set to move forward after Sampson Lewkowicz’s Sampson Boxing won a purse bid to secure promotional rights. However, the 2016 Nigerian Olympian was disappointed with his share of the purse and opted to bow out of their targeted rematch.

Sanchez previously defeated Ajagba by 10-round, unanimous decision in their October 2021 meeting of unbeaten heavyweights.

Hrgovic and Dubois both opted to wait until their separately ordered fights with Sanchez went to a purse bid hearing before they withdrew from the process.

In the event that Sanchez-Torrez sees the light of day, the eventual winner will become the sanctioning body’s mandatory challenger to unified champ Oleksandr Usyk, 24-0 (15 KOs). Fabio Wardley was recently named the WBO full champion from his previous interim title status after Usyk declined to move forward with an ordered title consolidation match.

Usyk still holds the WBA “Super”, WBC and IBF belts. Kabayel remains the recognized WBC interim titlist, while Kubrat Pulev possesses a secondary version of the WBA title, which he will defend against former unified cruiserweight titlist Murat Gassiev on December 12 in Dubai.

RICHARD TORREZ AND FRANK SANCHEZ GIVEN UNTIL JAN. 6 TO AGREE ON DEAL

The IBF is willing to be a little more patient.

Initially, Richard Torrez and Frank Sanchez were given a deadline of December 17 to come to an agreement on an ordered IBF final eliminator. However, The Ring has been informed that both sides have been given an extension.

They will have until January 6 to sort things out. If they fail to come to terms, a purse bid will be ordered.

Sanchez (25-1, 18 KOs) wants to prove that his loss to Agit Kabayel in May of last year was simply an off night. Sanchez was dropped twice before losing via seventh-round stoppage.

The normally slick Cuban, ranked No. 3 by the IBF, bounced back by beating Ramon Olivas Echeverria by third-round TKO in February.

Over the last few months, Moses Itauma, Efe Ajagba, and Filip Hrgovic all turned down offers to face Sanchez for various reasons.

Meanwhile, Torrez (14-0, 12 KKOs) has momentum. The 2020 Olympic Silver medalist is ranked No. 4 in the IBF. The 26-year-old hasn’t come close to losing a fight and spent this year claiming wins over Tomas Salek and Guido Vianello.

I hope this fight happens. It would be good for the division to have some exciting new contenders like Torrez to replace the inactive old ones like Sanchez.

Torrez could be ready to leapfrog everyone else to a title shot. Also, with Chisora being a possible opponent for Wardley, the second eliminator position will be up for grabs for the final eliminator. It's not unrealistic that we could see Torrez Vs Jalolov for the IBF final eliminator. That's the best case scenario.

We will not see Torrez vs Jalolov until one of them have the belt. This fight will be built up first.

Will Jalolov turn down an IBF eliminator against Anderson, Bakole, Vianello, Riakporhe etc? Would he then turn down a shot at Torrez as a final eliminator?

Richard Torrez vs. Frank Sanchez Purse Bid Delayed, Both Sides Inch Closer To A Deal

The IBF was set to conduct purse bids on the heavyweight final eliminator between Frank Sanchez and Richard Torrez on Tuesday but both sides have been given extra time to seal a deal.

Sanchez doesn't believe his recent form is an indication of who he is as a fighter. In May 2024, Sanchez was bullied and stopped in the seventh round of his clash with Agit Kabayel but has since come back to defeat low-ranking contender Ramon Olivas Echeverria in 2025.

In the immediate aftermath of that win, Sanchez was ordered to take part in an IBF eliminator. However, the likes of Filip Hrgovic, Daniel Dubois, and Efe Ajagba all declined.

The opportunity fell into the lap of Torrez (14-0, 12 KOs), who accepted.

The 2020 Olympic silver medalist would likely be the favorite against Sanchez. He’s coming off arguably the two biggest wins of his career, beating both Guido Vianello and Tomas Salek.

The winner of their supposed matchup would move near the top of the line for a shot at Ring, IBF, WBA, and WBC heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk. The Ring’s No. 1 ranked pound-for-pound fighter is currently negotiating a showdown against former long-reigning titlist, Deontay Wilder.

Frank Sanchez-Richard Torrez Jnr purse bid rescheduled for January 22

There is still time for the teams representing Frank Sanchez and Richard Torrez Jnr to reach a deal.

It just hasn’t come on a timeline agreeable with the sanctioning body who ordered their fight.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that the abovementioned IBF-ordered heavyweight title eliminator will head to a January 22 purse bid hearing. The development comes less than a week after all involved parties were granted an extension in hopes of coming to an agreement.

Instead, the proposed matchup will be made available to all IBF-registered promoters.

Cuba’s Sanchez is promoted by Warriors Boxing and Ural Boxing promotions, and co-managed by Mike Borao and Lupe Valencia. Torrez Jnr has been with Top Rank since signing out of the amateurs following his silver medal haul during the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

There was discussion at one point about the fight landing on the February 21 Mario Barrios-Ryan Garcia card in Las Vegas, Nevada. At the time, it was believed that the Barrios-Garcia fight would headline a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Prime Video pay-per-view event.

However, that dynamic drastically changed when Turki Alalshikh obtained the rights to the WBC welterweight title fight, which will now headline a Ring Magazine show on the same date.

Sanchez’s handlers have a relationship with Alalshikh and Riyadh Season, as the Cuban heavyweight has twice fought in Riyadh. Therefore, placement on the card is not yet out of the question. However, that decision would have to be made prior to the January 22 purse bid.

Cuba’s Sanchez, 25-1 (18 KOs), has not fought anywhere at all since last February in a confidence-restoring bout in Tijuana, Mexico. It came nine months after his lone career defeat, a seventh-round knockout to Agit Kabayel in the May 2024 WBC interim title fight in Riyadh.

Torrez, 14-0 (12 KOs), is coming off a first-round stoppage win over Tomas Salek on November 15 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The show was the closest to a full-fledged production from Top Rank since the end of its seven-year deal with ESPN last July. While not a Top Rank card outright, the event was loaded with several fighters under the Vegas-based promotional outfit.

The fight itself was the reason why Torrez previously had to pass on this very opportunity. He was one of five heavyweights offered the chance to face Sanchez, in a process that dates back to last April.

With the win, Torrez re-entered the queue at a time when Filip Hrgovic, Moses Itauma, Efe Ajagba and former IBF heavyweight titlist Daniel Dubois all declined to move forward.

Sanchez-Torrez was ordered in December, with multiple extensions granted both during the negotiation period and the purse bid process. The time has now come to settle this matter and crown an IBF mandatory for unified heavyweight titlist Oleksandr Usyk, 24-0 (15 KOs).

Wonder if this will be elevated to final eliminator. Chisora won the other semi final eliminator but it's fighting wilder now. If he retires then he won't fight the winner of this, if he loses he won't fight the winner of this.

Frank Sanchez-Richard Torrez Jnr eliminator set for March, purse bid canceled

The latest extension turned out to be the most productive for the Frank Sanchez-Richard Torrez Jnr IBF heavyweight title eliminator.

BS has confirmed that both sides were able to come to terms ahead of their rescheduled January 27 purse bid hearing, which was canceled as a result. Their elimination contest will land on a March 28 Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Prime Video pay-per-view event from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The show will be headlined by the rescheduled Sebastian Fundora-Keith Thurman WBC junior middleweight title fight.

Fight Freaks Unite’s Dan Rafael was the first to report the deal reached between Sanchez and Torrez.

Cuba’s Sanchez is promoted by Warriors Boxing and co-managed by Mike Borao and Lupe Valencia. Through that relationship has come his frequent appearances on PBC shows. Torrez Jnr – who hails from Tulare, California – signed with Top Rank out of the amateurs.

The development puts an end to a process that dated back to last April, and which saw Sanchez wait out six separate rounds of ordered fights. Torrez, 14-0 (12 KOs), initially declined the opportunity when it was first offered last year, but only because he already had a fight scheduled at the time.

That fight turned out to be a quick hit, as Torrez stopped Poland’s Tomas Salek in the first round on November 15 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Soon thereafter, the unbeaten heavyweight and 2021 Olympic silver medalist for the U.S. informed the IBF of his availability to face Sanchez, who still needed a dance partner at the time.

Several extensions were granted, both during the negotiation period and the purse bid process. Normally – and as it often related to Sanchez’s plight in moving forward with this opportunity – the requests for extensions are mere stalling tactics.

This time, it proved to be just enough to find common ground and come to an agreement.

The timing will leave Sanchez, 25-1 (18 KOs), out of the ring for more than a year. He has not fought since last February in a confidence restoring bout in Tijuana, Mexico. It came nine months after his lone career defeat, a seventh-round stoppage to Agit Kabayel in the May 2024 WBC interim title fight in Riyadh.

Torrez was comparatively busier but still had his slowest year as a pro, with just two fights in 2025 after having fought four times each in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

The slowdown was due in part to Top Rank no longer having a network or streaming deal. Their long run with ESPN and its platforms came to an end last summer. The Las Vegas-headquartered company is now reduced to streaming the occasional card on its Top Rank Classics FAST Channel and piecemealing the rest of its rosters on shows such as this.

Whoever prevails in Sanchez-Torrez will become the IBF mandatory challenger for unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, 24-1 (15 KOs). The point in which a mandatory title fight is ordered, however, will not be determined for some time. Ukraine’s Usyk is currently eyeing a summertime return, likely in a voluntary defense.

Honestly THIS fight shouldn't result in a title shot. It's certainly worth a bump or two up the rankings for the winner though. No harm in that.

Is this fight still happening? Haven’t heard much on it. I’d love torrez to get a win here…

He is very unorthodox but his win over guido is a real quality win.

I think there’s always a need for a torrez like fighter in the heavyweight division.
