Yeah he was still growing at that time ,but probably quite tall for a flyweight, Carpentier was an incredible athlete and man.Taansend wrote: ↑31 Dec 2025, 17:47I'm going to guess that the 14 year old Georges was not the same height as the 27 year old Georges.Old bones Ian wrote: ↑30 Dec 2025, 17:56 Panama Al Brown was 5' 9" when he turned pro as a flyweight, before going on to be one of the great bantamweight champions.
Georges Carpentier was 5'11" and would fight for the heavyweight title , but turned pro as a flyweight was he that tall then though as he was 15 years old at the time.
He might have been, but unlikely, especially given the difference in weight as he was around 100 pounds on turning pro & 172 when fighting Dempsey.
Flying hero in WW1 , world boxing champion , multi weight euro champion and then went onto stage and film after retirement from the ring.

He was amazing. My favourite Euro fighter (UK & Ireland not included).Old bones Ian wrote: ↑31 Dec 2025, 19:25Yeah he was still growing at that time ,but probably quite tall for a flyweight, Carpentier was an incredible athlete and man.Taansend wrote: ↑31 Dec 2025, 17:47I'm going to guess that the 14 year old Georges was not the same height as the 27 year old Georges.Old bones Ian wrote: ↑30 Dec 2025, 17:56 Panama Al Brown was 5' 9" when he turned pro as a flyweight, before going on to be one of the great bantamweight champions.

As a kid (80s) I used to read articles by people who attended the Dempsey fight - or who had spoken firsthand to attendees. The swaying hastily built stands, Carpentier being the 'Good' guy & war hero as opposed to draft dodging Dempsey. Newspapers even compared their skull shapes to determine who would win
I can only imagine the build up to it. The talk on the street & in bars, workplaces & probably even church.

I've got quite a collection of postcards from the Carpentier v Beckett fight , over the years managed to find about 20 , made by Beagles in 1919.Taansend wrote: ↑31 Dec 2025, 21:02He was amazing. Lebedev reminded me of a crazy dude.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑31 Dec 2025, 17:46 ya i remember the lebedev fight really well, crazy stuff. lebedev absolutely mangled but still firing away bravely and teeing off with flush shots on jones, jones just smiles back at him. lebedev valiant effort and actually up on the cards
but finally fell with just a couple rounds left
i thought that fight would ruin lebby, but he actually had his best run after
He was lethal.

Jibaro Perez, I was convinced he was well and truly unbeatable back in the day.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑08 Jan 2026, 10:34 Raul 'thin man' Perez was a bantam world champ who was 5ft10 on Boxrec (they used to say 5ft11)

Akeem Anifowoshe aka Kid Akeem, was a super flyweight, at 5'8 and was lethal.
Had one of the most brutal fights I have ever seen with Robert Quiroga.
Neither was the same after and both died young. Kid Akeem, broke and due a blood clot, I think, at 26 and Robert, murdered at 34 by a member of the Bandidos gang.
