Former heavyweight Gene Innocent has died of cancer at the age of 61.

A pro between 1967 and 1973, big Gene claimed stoppage victories over Welsh rivals Len 'Rocky' James and Mal Isaac, but was outpointed when he faced fellow Cardiffian Dennis Avoth for the national title in June 1973.

The man from Splott, who was managed by Benny Jacobs, also fought future world title challenger Joe Bugner, who stopped him in three rounds.

He leaves a wife and four children.

A lovely guy. He supported many functions during the Johnny Owen statue appeal, a real gentle giant, very approachable and always smiling.

He'll be missed. R.I.P. Gene.
