I'm still buzzing over Dalton's win and suspect I will be watching this fight several times in the next week

Beating a champ away from home for your first World title is special isn't it.
I think the two loudest cheers I've ever given were for Barker v Geale and Brook vs Porter. I know Matias and Geale weren't technically 'at home' but you get what I mean, winning in American is clearly much tougher than having home advantage here.
Obviously last night wasn't the best win by a Brit abroad but bloody satisfying. There are a few obvious away wins that are right up there, one that doesn't get mentioned as often as it deserves is Wayne McCullough winning in Japan.

Probably just behind AJ's win on away soil over Jake Paul.

Went to bed knackered at midnight with no intention of getting up to watch it. No alarm was set.
I woke up at 5am (norway time) for a slash and checked ny dodgy drogon.tv streaming service on the phone. The bell was ringing for round one.
The inbuilt boxing clock must have woken me up. I never wake up that early.
Glad I did cos it was a beauty. Problem was I was on such a high afterwards I didnt get back to sleep and spent today knackered again

Sometimes I think I don't know boxing. Or at least I see things very differently.
I've seen many calls Dalton's win totally dominant and that he put a beatdown on Mathias.
Apart from the first I saw the rounds as very close with both men busted up and hurt.
When I saw Smith walk back to the corner at the end of the 4th, his face mashed and eye bleeding I thought he was struggling.
Yes, he was giving it to Mathias big time, but I saw it as a close even battle, back and forth, to toe. Smith landing the better shots, cleaner, harder but Mathias's work doing more damage.
Watched it again last night. Epic fight and for once a Brit stands firm when the moment calls, showed he had the grit and the toughness to put it all on the line for glory and come through the fire. Brilliant and hats off to the man

It was a beat down in that Matias was clinically beat! But as you said until then there wasn't much in it(although I always had Smith a step ahead), it was a close enthralling fight.forcefraser wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026, 05:47 Sometimes I think I don't know boxing. As champ, I would have let Matias continue, but I think the end was nigh.

Re: Subriel Matias vs. Dalton Smith | PPV.com - 10 January 2026
Watching it back last night, Smith may have been closer to defeat himself than I’d first thought. He was starting to ship a lot of solid punches and wasn’t exactly returning fire in a technical manner.
I was and am delighted that Matias wilted under the bombs, but it may have been a bloody good job that happened.

I've only watch it the once but that was the same impression I had. It was the kind of fight that might have gone differently on another occasion. That's not to take anything away from the performance, it's what you should get at the top level: proper, competitive fights.Kilburn wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026, 07:20 Watching it back last night, Smith may have been closer to defeat himself than I’d first thought. Re: Subriel Matias vs. Dalton Smith | PPV.com - 10 January 2026
Funnily enough when I watched it back I thought Dalton was actually better than I thought and matched Matias all the way.
Nobody ever beat Matias like that. It was always going to be a slugfest if the opponent is willing to take some punches to get inside and land his own. He took some shots but nobody is going to beat Matias like that without taking shots like that. The actual knockout reminded me of his knockout of Nathan Bennett during the pandemic, in Eddies back garden. It was the exact same punch.
I think the performance is extremely good. It wasn't a case of running on the backfoot. He showed some guile to hold and spoil at times. Getting inside and smothering Matias at times so that Matias wasn't effective at those points, was very impressive.
I was on the Azim bandwagon before and I thought he would do Dalton. It's a different kind of fight, with Dalton having to get inside of a longer reach and sharper straight punches.

Completely agree with the commentary, particularly from one of the commentators (don't know which was which) the other one was slightly more balanced..Coco wrote: ↑11 Jan 2026, 08:03Exactly that, the commentator is from Puerto Rico, was equally as biased in the previous fight with Manny Rodriguez.Bigdogsnose wrote: ↑11 Jan 2026, 04:50 Fantastic that.
Commentary was shite. They were making out that Matias was bsting dalton up. There actually didnt look like much on Matias shots, Smih was smothering him and then stepling back to get his own shots off.
Matias is a bully. Smith wasnt for being bullied.
I thought Smith was doing well and winning whereas this fella clearly saw it the other way!
With prospects on the way up, you always wonder how they will cope in the deep end.
Smith just took Matais into deep water and drowned him

Re: Subriel Matias vs. Dalton Smith | PPV.com - 10 January 2026
Yeah, it looked touch and go to me too. I didn’t see Smith hurt, he’s definitely got a good chin, but he was hanging it out and getting caught cleanly and dropping his hands at one point, that will spell trouble against someone better than Matias. When you’ve got a great chin like that, don’t ruin it by taking too many shots. That’s why I think he’s in trouble if he fights the bullet proofed chin Isaac Cruz like that, but hopefully he tightens up.
His performance was awesome, and a few weeks ago Sam Noakes was just as impressive in other ways, and had a better fighter in front of him for sure.
Hearn has to make up for losing the fight bid and burying it on a PPV and get the rights to show that fight all over Sheffield. He can buy them for peanuts, because the promoter must be flat broke now, poor guy. Matias comes across as a decent man.
What’s the accent Dalton has? it doesn’t sound like normal Sheffield, some sort of hybrid…
Sam Noakes Dalton Smith could be a hell of a fight soon

Raul Marquez was on commentary. He's been on the commentary circuit in America for about 20 years. He was too pro matias and didn't call the fight well I thought. At points he did mention good work by Dalton but only usually when Dalton was clearly landing heavy leather. There was plenty of good Dalton work that went ignored

Delighted for Dalton, cracking win away from home. Held when he had to and showed a solid chin at times, but offensively was good and took advantage of minimal defence/head movement from Matias.
Watching it first time around I was a little surprised the referee stopped it when he did but looking at it agains Matias did look in big trouble.
Great watch!

When a fighter staggers back at anything past 7 when they have just got up I always think they are a bit daft to complain. If you can't stand up without swaying around then the ref is going to start getting worried.NoScoutingReports wrote: ↑12 Jan 2026, 12:04 Delighted for Dalton, cracking win away from home. He seemed just about ok at the end of the count.
On the other hand, Fury v Wilder, if the ref had then said walk towards me, he may have been ok.
