Top 50 HW'S 1940-49.

Post by mattdonnellon »

This is the 7th in the series, same rules, just fights that took place within the decade count for rating purposes. I found this decade difficult as the depth really fell off and I was scrambling to fill out a decent 50. I reckon the reason for this was the missing years due to WW2. Indeed, there is a paucity of European fighters in contention. Let me know if I missed anybody or if you consider any rating as crazy!

Meant to respond to this earlier. Another great list!
Yeah, World War II certainly hurt the sport. Who knows what fights would have happened that didn't. I would rank Elmer Ray in the top 10. Probably would down Maxim or Mauriello.

Very valid post, I think all three are very close and I'm torn about taking up your suggestion, I was actually surprised at the lack of depth on Ray's ledger, Savold(who everybody beat) and Walker and wins and losses to Lovett and Reddish. Loss to Thompson and then winding down defeats by Riviera and Holman. The Charles fights seem to be both wins for Ez but the Walcott fights were impressive. Maxim and Mauriello have similar records, pretty much interchangable IMO.

Would be awesome of to see the first Charles-Ray fight and see if it was a bad decision or not. That was Ray's third fight that month. Both had fought 11 days earlier!

Nice list Matt and well done. I am surprised that there is no place for Bruce Woodcock amongst the fifty. Whilst he was no great shakes, his knockout victories over Lesnevich and Oma plus his victory over Olek surely puts him ahead of Joe Muscato, for instance.

Savold, too, I don't know what I was thinking. Amended in my Excel at 47, thanks, Miles.
