Proper shithouse behaviour that
Something must be eating him up inside
Always thought he was alright, the man's obviously a complete fool.

WTF.
I worked with John when he turned over under Joe Gallagher, who he was very close to.
This doesn’t sound like him at all. He was really polite, easy to work with and very funny - remember when he wowed with a speech at the Boxing Writers Dinner.
Seemed to have the world at his feet.

not to be cliche, but really do wonder about brain damage. cte and trauamtic brain injuries can really transform people and make them much more volatile. impulse control gets shot and they can be set off wildly in an instant, after having been all good just a moment before. the son of a family friend has a tbi and he will just suddenly start going off over the seemingly smallest things. was always a laid back guy before.
john was a warrior who had so many gruelling fights....took a lot of shots. i remember having him even with rios in his world title challenge going into the 9th, before rios took over. those 2 were like stylistic twins.

I think he had the longest unbeaten streak in European boxing at one point.
Mitchell was class that night

Re: John Murray jailed for three years
That is true, and im surprised his defence didn't go down that route instead of the gym owner doing bits for the community spiel
Something about head trauma damaging the frontal lobe
Re: John Murray jailed for three years
It's very sad because he was always one of the good guys. Humble, tough and guaranteed entertainment. Hopefully he can move on from this when he gets out and it's not just part of a continuing spiral downwards.
Re: John Murray jailed for three years
You would think following murray on his Instagram everything seemed fine just living his normal life.
From memory murray was beating Mitchell before Mitchell stopped him, think murray was parting in Germany before the fight from what I can recall.
Think murray of today would have had a much better boxing career with better pay days and arena fights, instead of spending his prime years in leisure centers.

Isn't CTE diagnosis only possible post-mortem?Oiky wrote: ↑30 Jan 2026, 03:39That is true, and im surprised his defence didn't go down that route instead of the gym owner doing bits for the community spiel

I've got zero time for woman beaters, utter scumbag, hope he rots in there.
Chisora should have gone to prison for what he did as well.

As others have said I wouldn’t rule out CTE issues especially if this is completely out of character for him.
Re: John Murray jailed for three years
Obviously it has been a while since John was last in the public spotlight through boxing and I have not followed his post boxing career. In addition to the comments regarding head shots in a tough career - I also wonder about some fighters particularly with a come forward style and the accolades of being super tough and when they get pushed backed themselves and stopped - they are often not the same fighter again and you do wonder what it does for them psychologically during and post career. Probably since being young kids they have been pigeoned holed and championed for their toughness and I think when they get "out toughed" it is incredibly hard for them mentally both in terms of the their career and out of the ring - it is part of their identity.
I struggle to think of anyone really with that style who seemed to ever be the same fighter after they were stopped or also had great mental health post career. I guess in terms of a career, Dereck Chisora earned more money post David Haye exposing him than after.

Neither of whom I would describe as their biggest strength being their strength. Barrera especially was a slick, skilled defence boxer. Pacquiao - yes was aggressive - but his speed was the key asset. Indeed though aside from a freak one punch KO in a fight he was dominating - I cannot remember a time where Manny was forced to change approach and go on the back foot. He lost decisively vs Mayweather, but he didn't get "outstrengthed".veriton wrote: ↑30 Jan 2026, 11:06Pacquiao and Barrera have done ok.stujones wrote: ↑30 Jan 2026, 07:35 Obviously it has been a while since John was last in the public spotlight through boxing and I have not followed his post boxing career. People with the style of John Murray, Ricky Hatton and even Mike Tyson. If they didn't come forward and "be first" they were not effective at all. With those three you know - get them on the back foot and they are beaten. Easier said than done though.
Steve Robinson and Paul Hodkinson would be two though - in terms of their fighting career neither were the same after they were essentially "bullied onto the back foot" by opponents - but in terms of life after boxing - Steve Robinson is seemingingly in a good place and I hope Hokko is also.
You knew when Robinson started going on the back foot vs Naz - his fight was done, same with Hatton, same with Hokko, Murray and Tyson.

Re: John Murray jailed for three years
John has taken a lot of punches. I remember there was outcry after the Rios fight when he wasn't stopped sooner and took too much punishment. Can't condone the conduct in any way but does he have CTE
Re: John Murray jailed for three years
Not swarmers exactly, but Margartio and Kovalev never seemed the same after getting pushed back and stopped by Mosely and Ward.stujones wrote: ↑30 Jan 2026, 11:28Neither of whom I would describe as their biggest strength being their strength.
