Efe Ajagba-Charles Martin to headline February 14 Zuffa Boxing show

The details for Zuffa Boxing’s second planned show remain forthcoming, but it appears the upstart company has already secured a main event for its third outing.

Boxing Scene has learned that a heavyweight match between Efe Ajagba and Charles Martin will headline the planned February 14 Paramount+ show from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The card comes at the tail end of three planned shows in a four-weekend span for Zuffa, in alignment with the January 24 debut of UFC on Paramount+.

Zuffa and UFC are both under the TKO Group Holdings umbrella.

News of the February 14 main event was first reported by Fight Freaks Unite founder Dan Rafael. The event itself is listed on the Nevada State Athletic Commission schedule, as are shows planned for January 23 and January 30.

The January 23 launch show will be topped by a junior middleweight matchup between unbeaten prospect Callum Walsh and former title challenger Carlos Ocampo. No fights are yet confirmed for the January 30 show, though Boxing Scene has learned that former WBA 140lbs titlist Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela is likely to top the bill.

Ajagba-Martin represents an interesting pairing, given the series’ proposed direction of showcasing rising talent.

It also resurrects a previously planned matchup, as the bout was once eyed by Top Rank to headline a November 2023 ESPN+ show from Stateline, Nevada. Ajagba instead faced Joseph Goodall, whom he stopped in the 4th round.

The 2016 Olympian – representing Nigeria – was tabbed earlier last year to face Frank Sanchez in an ordered IBF title eliminator in what would have been a rematch to their October 2021 meeting won by Sanchez.

The bout went to a purse bid hearing, won by Sampson Boxing, LLC.

However, Ajagba, 20-1-1 (14 KOs), was displeased with the purse offering and declined to move forward with the fight. It cost him the chance to avenge his lone career defeat, and ultimately led to the end of his agreement with Top Rank.

Martin, 30-4-1 (27 KOs), previously held the IBF heavyweight title, having won the belt in January 2016. His stay was brief, as he was stopped in the second round by then-unbeaten Anthony Joshua in his first title win in April 2016.

Just 10 fights have followed in the near-10-year period since that outing for the now-39-year-old southpaw. He provided stiff tests for unbeaten rising heavyweights Jared Anderson and Adam Kownacki and former title challenger Luis Ortiz along the way.

There have also been some memorable wins as well, such as his February 2020 knockout victory over former title challenger Gerald Washington.

That said, Martin has not had the chance to walk this earth like a god since a November 2024 early knockout victory over Matthew McKinney in Redwood City, California.

The trio of cards presented by Zuffa Boxing are the first boxing events to appear on a Paramount Skydance platform since cable giant Showtime’s exit from the sport at the end of 2023.

Top Rank was doing nothing for his career but Zuffa have no heavyweights signed. Martin is also a terrible opponent in 2025. He's 39 and has fought 3 times since 2022. There are genuine opponents for him out there like Anderson (Top Rank), Bakole (Boxxer), Torrez (Top Rank), Wilder (Unassigned?), Makhmudov (?), Miller (Matchroom) plus others. Zuffa will pad his record with has-beens or never beens like Martin, Ortiz and Pettigrew to try to make him a name in the US but I don't see them having success.

Apparently Feb 1st card is looking like Oleksandr Gvozdyk vs Radivoje ‘Hot Rod’ Kalajdzic as headline.

Zuffa boxing 3rd card. Not totally bad if you ask me. Should be entertaining while it last. Wondering if they can get some good fun undercard

would have been a decent matchup 3 or 4 years ago (both fighters have the same upright style tailor made for ko).

but Martin hasnt had a competitive fight since 2023 and the only thing he appears to have done since then is remove his age from his boxrec profile.

no one watches Paramount, i doubt this will thrill too many.

i think there will def be a KO win for Ejagba but my worry is that Martin is just picking up the paycheque and will do a Malik Scott in round 1

I don't think Martin reaches the mid rounds even if he was trying. Anything but a KO within 3 rounds makes Ajagba look bad. He's a KO artist against an old, inactive boxer that has been dropped many times.

Считаю Аджагбе могли найти более достойного соперника. Мартину 39 лет и он уже сильно простойный, у него 1 бой за последние три года :KO:

Charles Martin… why? Fucks sake.
Because most heavyweight contenders have their own plans.

Ajagba dismisses Martin's Power; Predicts KO Of 'Scared' Ex-Champ

The hard-hitting Nigerian heavyweight will meet Martin on Sunday night in Ajagba’s first fight since his debatable majority draw with Bakole nine months ago. Ajagba was mindful of Bakole’s heavy hands, but The Ring’s No. 8 contender for Oleksandr Usyk’s title won’t approach Martin with the same level of respect.

“He’s not a puncher,” Ajagba told The Ring. “I’ve fought people that punch, not people like Charles Martin. Charles Martin can’t punch. I can’t wait.”

Martin is 39 and has fought only once in the past 31 months. The former IBF champ noticeably buzzed then-unbeaten knockout artist Jared Anderson twice in his last meaningful fight, though, and dropped dangerous Cuban southpaw Luis Ortiz twice two bouts before he lost to Anderson by unanimous decision in July 2023.

Ortiz recovered and stopped Martin in the sixth round of their action-packed clash in January 2022. Ajagba anticipates joining Ortiz and former unified heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua as opponents who’ve beaten Martin inside the distance.

“I’m gonna knock him out,” Ajagba said. “Charles Martin doesn’t like to put his hands up. But I don’t care – if he picks his hands up, it doesn’t matter to me. I’ll just touch him, touch him, touch him, touch him.”

Ajagba, 31, won five fights in a row before he battled Bakole (21-2-1, 16 KOs) on May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The 6-foot-6, 240-pound Ajagba (20-1-1, 14 KOs) has lost only a unanimous decision to Cuban contender Frank Sanchez (25-1, 18 KOs), who was undefeated when they fought in October 2021.

The 2016 Olympian appreciates the opportunity to headline a Zuffa Boxing card, which Paramount+ will stream from UFC’s Meta APEX performance center in Las Vegas (9 p.m. ET; 6 p.m. PT). Though Ajagba expects to dominate Martin, he hasn’t overlooked the 6-foot-5, 250-pound southpaw because he also realizes Martin (30-4-1, 27 KOs) will approach this 10-round bout as his last chance to rejuvenate his career almost 10 years after Joshua knocked him out in the second round to earn the British superstar his first world title.

Ajagba nonetheless knows he has been installed as an 11-1 favorite by DraftKings for good reason.

“He doesn’t have anything to bring to me,” Ajagba said. “He doesn’t have any chance. Even though he fought Joshua, Ortiz, Jared Anderson, I was not impressed at all. … Everybody says Charles Martin is the former IBF world champion. Good for him, but I don’t care. It isn’t a fight because Charles Martin is scared of me, to be honest. He’s scared. We were supposed to spar last year and he refused to spar me.

“I said, ‘Let’s do sparring.’ He said if I’m fighting a southpaw, let him know. I said, ‘I’m not fighting a southpaw, but [we can spar].’ And he refused. He didn’t wanna spar. He knows that. But here we are – he wants to fight me in a real fight. I was like, ‘Oh, I’m glad you accepted the fight.’ I was surprised.”
