Nick Wells had defeated Larry Holmes twice in 1972.
The first time during the National AAU tournament.

I didn't know either that it was Larry Holmes in the photo until I read the caption beneath it.
But you can tell its Larry Holmes by the shape of his arms.
It is a AP(Associated Press) wire photo.Maybe the AP still has he original negative?
The same news story was printed in papers across the country,.but only the Spokane WA. paper
was the only one that published a photo of Wells vrs Holmes,
at least that is available on (free)newspaper archives.
However there may be a better reproduced photo of it in one of the pay-per-view newspapers articles.
(but I refuse to pay to see any article from these greedy newspapers they should be all public domain if more then 20 years old)
BTW Wells had knocked Holmes down twice in the first round.

Does anyone have a listing of Larry Holmes amateur record?
19-3.
Was it his last 3 consequetive amateur fights that he lost?
How was it that it was Larry Holmes who got another oppertunity
to go to the Olympics in Munich Germany
by facing Bobick in the Olympic Boxing Trials?
Did Holmes fight Don Nelson or Ron Draper since his loss(by KO)
to Nick Wells in the semi-finals earlier in July?
Why didnt Holmes fight LeRoy Jones then to determine
which one got to fight Bobick?

Has anyone here seen any video of Nick Wells fighting as either an amateur or professional?
I seem to remember a few of his amateur and professional fights were televised in the 1970's

Holmes turned professional 8 month later. Kinda weird that Holmes was sparked as an amateur in one round then ended up having a very good chin as a pro.

Sure, quite a few of his am fights were shown on network TV during the 70's when am boxing was huge in the US. A short hard hitting southpaw with limited defense and poor stamina, he was exciting to watch but doomed in the pro ranks.

As far as his professional fights,I think Nick wells vs Mike Koraniki was shown on the old CBS Friday Night Fights April-29- 1977.
and also Nick Wells vs GG Maldarndo May-15- 1978 was televised too.
Unfortunatly he lost both of those bouts.

Nick Wells was still fighting in the amateurs clear up to early 1976,
when he was in his mid-20's if I remember correctly.
He probably was on television a number of times competing
for either a spot on the Olympic team and other amateur tournaments either live or on tape in the finals.
i think ABC Wide World of Sports had shown him against the Russian Yuri Nestorov
U.S.A vrs Russia January-27-1973.
I seem to remember also later on TV he had fought the same fighter from Poland that George Foreman had fought in 1968 at the Olympics in Mexico City .
yeah, as a heavyweight ,being a 5 ft 10 inch tall boxer may have been a little more diffuclt in the professionals.

Just looking over Wells record,he was a tremendous amateur. Maybe he hung in the ams to long. Over two hundred fights. You see this on occasion with some fighters who were in the ams for years and years. There is a burnout factor. It also looks like after he couldn't get by a couple a few of the noted trial horses of the day, namely James Dixon and Cookie Wallace,he got tossed in with savage punching Jeff Simms. That may have taken the final wind out of his sails. That wasn't a good match for him to be put in. Its classic pro matchmaking. Take a guy who has a name like Wells but who has struggled, and put him in with the prospect fully expecting the prospect to win.

Is Nick Wells amateur record of 207 bouts posted anywhere?
Is anyone else we would know whom he had defeated other then Larry Holmes?
I read where Lou Duva had approached him in around 1975 to turn professional but he chose someone local in Texas instead,

I wonder what Duva wouldve done differently for Nick though. It seems looking at his record they were moving him along sensibly. That is of course until they threw him in with Simms. Duva pulled a similar move throwing Meldrick in with Terry Norris. That mightve even been worse. Maybe Wells was better off with whoever had him.

Wells was a great amateur but as a pro he had endurance problems.
