the "Durable Dane".
In your opinion ?
has he been just 'over-hyped" over the years ?
how would he have done against later competition ?

I think he gets destroyed by Joe Brown, Duran, Ike Williams, Arguello, Loma, Chavez-just to name a few. But, a great in his own day.

Well , he took a bath in the enormous vat of lemonade at the Willard - Johnson fight. Or was it the Willard -Dempsey fight? Either way, he must’ve been quite a fun guy to be around…

I'm not a Psychologist (actually I'm even surprised I spelt the word correctly there for once) but sounds to me like he may have had some deep rooted psycholcil problem,
(similar to perhaps Jake LaMotta's) and used that for his benifit inside the ring.

I found out the other day reading a book, that Battling Nelson had once lived and worked in a small town that I use to live in
back in the 1980's.
Battling Nelson had been working there at a "Meat store" and also at "Moms" Robinson's Boarding house back in the 1890's.

I wanna say he was from Hegwisch which is a neighborhood on Chicagos far south side.
Tough blue collar area. Not crime tough so much but hard working tough people tough.
I could be wrong about him being from there.
Might be someone else.
