There have been stories about Marciano having pro fights before he officially became a pro. don't know how much there is to it. Never seen it confirmed by anyone credible. Holmes did want to go 50-0. Had he done that, I think he would have retired right then. The night that he lost to Spinks, he went on a rant ripping Marciano. He claimed that Marciano had defeat his own brother and weird stuff like that.

He did turn pro, then go back to the amateurs for a year, then go back to the pro ranks, which likely caused some confusion. And he did lose in the amateur ranks during that stretch. So, he did not go 49 straight fights undefeated... in a strict sense.

I guess Larry Holmes may have been "insinuating" that Marciano had lost some of those fights he had fought under an 'assumed" name and did not count them (he only counted the ones that he had won.... according to ole Larry LoL).
