LEON SPINKS TRAINER

Post by overhand_right »

Manny Steward is listed however I cannot recall any period when this was correct.

In the 70s Sam Soliman was his trainer, and obviously for the Ali win George Benton was brought in to co-train.

From the Jan 4, 1985 NY Times:

SPORTS PEOPLE;
Change in Trainers

Published: January 4, 1985

Livingstone Bramble , the mercurial boxer who won the World Boxing Association's lightweight title from

Ray (Boom Boom) Mancini last June, was on his best behavior yesterday at a New York news conference to announce that the rematch was set for Feb. 16 in Reno. But Bramble always does something unusual: He has dismissed the trainer who helped prepare him for the 14th-round knockout upset of Mancini,

Tommy Parks , and replaced him with the trainer who first taught him how to box in the Virgin Islands,

Ruppert Nell Brown . . . .

Leon Spinks , the former heavyweight champion, has joined the Detroit- based Kronk Boxing Team and will return to the ring this month after a 21-month absence.

Spinks's boxing affairs will be managed by

Emanuel Steward , manager of the Kronk team, and his business and personal matters will be handled by National Sports Inc., based in Taylor, Mich., Steward and National Sports said in a joint statement. The statement said Spinks would fight on Jan. 31 Cobo Arena, but no opponent was named.

Hello.

So just to clarify- the trainer Spinks used very briefly in 1985 when he was washed up & past his glory years is the one who is listed as his overall trainer?

Are there any Boxrec guidelines on this sort of thing?

Surely it would be more logical to list Sam Soliman and George Benton as these are the men who guided him to the world title & trained him during his prime years?

Yay? Nay..?

I would tend to agree. Since on the bio there is basically room for only one name, then I would think for retired fighters, the trainer should be the one he is most known to be with or with during the peak of his career. The wiki page can and is frequently used to show an expanded list of trainers. I believe this is the unofficial/unspoken guideline most of the editors attempt to follow, but I'm sure there are hundreds of fighters that fall outside of this.
