They Got Away With It!

Post by gilgamesh »

I'll move this thread to the Boxing history section once it plays itself out, but for now I wanted to put it in the Current Scene section to get a little more activity in it.

What are some examples we can all think of where a guy won a fight on a Foul, and actually got away with it. Still has the W on his record, even though we all see that foul

A few obvious ones that jump to mind are Roberto Duran winning the Lightweight title from Ken Buchanan on a low blow. Andre Ward winning the Kovalev rematch on low blow(s) plural.

I feel like I've seen oodles of hitting a guy when he's down moments that happened close enough for the referee not to call it, but the guy throwing the blow was lucky not to get called on it.

What do we got fellas? What's some of the Shadiest wins in Boxing history?

I'm specifically focusing on KO finishes with a foul here, not Bad decisions.

Imagine how many guys over the years got a TKO stoppage on a cut caused by a headbutt. That has to have happened 1000's of times over the history of the sport. Probably not so much in the video era, but surely more times than you could count in dodgy situations or a guys' hometown or whatever.

I know recently a lot of people took issue with David Adeleye's win over Jeamie TKV where he hit him on the break in a clinch. So that's another one.

Ward vs Kovalev 2. I have no problem with Ward taking close decision in 1st fight, despite Kovalev deserved it more. It was close fight. But that blatant low blows in rematch, supported by ref was too much for me. Worst thing is, Ward is widely recognized as sweet science master lol. Got away with so much dirty sh!t it makes me sick.

I would say Salido low blows against Lomachenko, that was pure madness, ukrainan has balls of steel. on the other Hand, Lomachenko did a loooot of holding in that fight, so that is not that unfair.

I just rewatched that fight yesterday in fact as you say that, and I agree with you. Salido lowblowed the living sh*t out of Loma in that fight. It's insane he didn't get more point deductions or a DQ.

It's to Loma's credit that he just took them like a man, and kept doing his best to just fight back to the best of his ability, but someone in his corner should've been raising hell about all the low blows. The language gap I'm sure was a problem there.

Whenever Loma is opening up on Salido in the 12th, and has him in a lot of trouble. Salido fends him off almost exclusively with body shots at least 75% of 'em going low.

Ward v Kovalev 2 is a clear one.
I was going to say Holyfield v Tyson 2 due to Holyfield using his head, but then Mike bit his ear off.

Most impressive thing is that Lomachenko was still able to step on the gas in 12th and almost Stop Salido. Unbelievable conditioning

As far as rating Loma's accomplishments all time. I don't consider the Salido "loss" to be a black mark against him. It was only his 2nd fight, and he basically gave as good as he got in spite of losing the decision. It was a valuable learning experience and he took it forward into his next several fights.

I remember thinking it was a liberty someone would get a title shot with so few bouts.

Khan Vs Barerra springs to mind.

Accidental head clash in the first sends it to the scorecards in the 5th.

Khan was rightly up on the cards, but that cut was a horror show. Severely impacted Barrera's performance.

his first fight he beat the wbo international belt holder, who had a top 15 wbo rating. when you beat that type of guy, it usually gets you rated in the top 15 yourself, which then makes you an eligible opponent for voluntary defenses. lomachenko simply bypassed the usual 20 or so mediocre opponents that most guys face before getting to that stage.

i have seen some people say it was unfair he got a shot so early, but he got the ranking legitimately, through beating a guy who was a wbo sub titlist and already ranked before he even turned pro. thats how the abcs work, for loma and other fighters. those intercontinental titles we dont care about actually are relevant for getting a world ranking and title shot

Two similar ones:

Dempsey vs Sharkey - series of low blows from Dempsey, Sharkey stopped to protest to the ref and Dempsey knocked him out.

Kid Lewis vs Carpentier - Lewis knocked out when he thought the ref had called break.

Both very contested at the time.

Kovalev was out on his feet from a clean head shot. The low blows ended it when he stopped throwing back as ward was trying to finish him

Just providing context. He didnt just hit him in the gonads and get a stoppage

Kovalev was not out on his feet but he was hurt from the repeated low blows to his nuts. This is the fight that finally turned me off boxing.

He had Kovalev in trouble. Out on his feet is a bit of a stretch. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that he may have been about to get a clean stoppage, but he didn't get one. At the end of the day though a win is a win. I definitely don't think that's the kinda win you want to spike the ball, and go out on, but whatever.

Duran has the questionable win over Buchanan, but it kinda is forgiven because he went on to have such a dominant reign, and fight everyone people wanted to see him fight.

Ultimately both were lucky to get away with the W in those circumstances. Jack Sharkey in a similar position in Boxing history was not lucky.

Kovalev was wobbly but he was boxing back and avoiding punches. Defending effectively but on the back foot. Ward's last 2 or 3 punches were all low blows. Ref should've given Kovalev time rather than call the fight.

Can't remember which fights right now but for sure some boxers have gotten away with blatant KO rabbit punches?
And others hitting the opponent when clearly down.
