Who said that hitting the speed bag these days was 'in-effective" anyway ?
Show me the last Champion or top contender that really hit the speed bag
the 'old school way" and I will show you the last boxer from the "Golden Age" of boxing.

I mean compare that hitting of the speed bag to the HW champ of 20 years earlier !
( must have been a slow but steady decline to the art)

Man, watching Big George Foreman hitting the speed bag the way he did,
reminded me of Bluto hitting Popeye in those old Popeye cartoons on TV.
here is some (really brief footage) of Leon Spinks hitting the speed bag.

BTW feel free to post any of your favorite boxers punching the speed bag.
I think this must have been similiar to how Bob Fitzsimmons must have had hit the speed bag
back in the 1890's, with the arms extended whist doin' it.
( Except Fitzsimmons must have had hit it a heck of a lot harder one would imagine)

Luis Firpo looks to have had hit the speed bag in a similiar manner.
(standing further back and arms punching straight ahead)

the speed bag is still in every gym, pretty much every active boxer will have hit it, this extinction narrative isnt true. its just not a major part of training, you do it for a few rounds at most. guys talk about how much sparring they got in or how well they worked with their trainer, not about how many times the hit the speed bad.

i do enjoy the vids though, keep posting :yay:

Watch the very first minute of this movie.
do boxing gyms still sound like that when you walk into one ?
(this one was somewhere at Miami Beach)

the 2 gyms i trained in would a lot of the time, actually yes

now, the one thing i think u do see far less of in recent years, is fighters actually punching the speed bag. its more just the pounding the bag with the side of the hand.

i generally didnt use the speed bag that much because i felt the double end bag offered pretty much every thing the speed bag does, and then some. you'd get plenty of training on your hand -eye reflexes (like the speed bag) while being able to use the bag in a more fight applicable way, incorporating punches and movement more realistically. you can box on the double end bag like you do in the ring, not so much standing in ones spot swinging your arms around like the speed bag. that said i still used the speed bag , it was just a smaller part of the work out

Gorblimey tho-look at the quality of the speed bag back then, must have been some fine thick leather ones.
btw does that trainer look like he may have "ADS"? he goes from one thing to another in mere seconds !

Back in the 1970's, I always enjoyed these old boxing movies, because some times in watching them,
you could pick up a few "boxing tips".
(check out 20:00 of this clip on how to begin working on hitting a speed bag and minutes later hitting one like a champ !)
