Fast forward the best part of a decade and the sporting public seems perfectly happy with such events taking place. Have people become more stupid or just less caring ?
Difference. Pac has still been fighting here and there for the last 10 years and FMJ has maintained his weight and been hitting pads, having exhibitions

Many looked at Eubank and Benn as grandads for Some reasons

Boxing was a serious sport back then. Now it’s half-filled with YouTubers, social influencers and former UFC guys doing it for a jolly. This is just one more clown show to add to it.

This is what i started to think. It’s a bit of a mad thought to say this might be a good fight.

If Pacman wins, which is very possible, a lot changes in terms of how people will rate them looking back
It won't affect how I rate them looking back. Pacquiao is too far ahead. I would've always had Floyd ahead of him until recently when I went back and watched all available fights of both of them.

It wouldn't be the most shocking thing though if it turned out to be a better fight. Tim Witherspoon vs Greg Page 2 when they were old men was WAY better than the fight they had for the title when they were much younger.
Hindsight is a crazy thing. I’ve always, always been more Floyd, but it might depend on your age as well.

This is not take anything away from Floyd or Pacquiao for any of us here, but it will forever be brought up as a stat.
Most definitely, but Larry Holmes beat Muhammad Ali, and he doesn't rank ahead of him on the All Time list either.

Pacquiao already had a career equal to Floyd's prior to ever setting foot in the Welterweight division. His achievements fighting at Welterweight put him a class by himself, but he does I'm sure WANT this win for his own personal pride, and for the perception of the common folk. This is the biggest mountain he didn't climb.

Now this is interesting. I’m sure the exact order is different for every fighter, but age takes certain things first. The “power is the last thing to go” shout is a proper boxing cliche
The power went on these 2 years ago. The reflexes are gonna be the bigger problem for 'em both.

I remember Holmes beating Ali as I’m sure do most of us here but when younger fans come to a sport they’re more likely to just see stats and records.

There's more to records than simply being undefeated though. Who did you beat? How did you look beating them? All that plays a part.

Pacquiao is the only Flyweight ever to have moved up and won Championship at 147 and 154.

To put that into perspective, I don't think any other Flyweight has even risen as high as 130 pounds before successfully. Manny went to 130 and well beyond that. His achievement is truly unprecedented. If he avenges the loss to Floyd it somehow makes him EVEN MORE of a Legend which doesn't really seem possible, but the opportunity has presented itself to him.

Good fight, Mayweather did the square root of zero in the first fight, I don't expect him to do anything in this one either, but he won't be able to run as much, could see him getting stopped tbh.

Manny Pacquiao on Floyd Mayweather rematch: 'This is my moment to prove it'

Manny Pacquiao, in his first public comments regarding his coming September 18 rematch versus Floyd Mayweather Jnr, told Boxing Scene Tuesday that he’s confident he’ll deliver his rival a first defeat.

“I’m very excited for the rematch. This is my moment to prove it,” Pacquiao said from the Philippines, where he awoke to learn Netflix had formally announced the bout will occur at the Sphere in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao, 47, has yet to visit the unique big-screen venue that has hosted concert residencies by U2 and Eagles, and now will stage the second bout between the top two fighters of this century who are each already residents of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Pacquiao, 62-8-3 (39 KOs), is a record eight-division champion who fought for world titles in four decades. Mayweather, who turns 49 today, retired 50-0 after posting victories over the likes of Pacquiao (2015, UD 12), Oscar De La Hoya, Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto.

In their first bout, which generated a record 4.6 million pay-per-view buys and more than $600 million in revenue, Mayweather won 116-112, 116-112, 118-110 on the scorecards in an event widely panned for its inactivity as Pacquiao struggled through a torn right rotator cuff suffered in training, which required post-fight surgery.

Coming to this rematch healthy will be a major difference for Pacquiao, as will the fact that he just emphasized his ability by fighting recent WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios to a draw in July after maintaining a rigorous training camp.

The Mayweather fight is also scheduled for 12 rounds.

“I know I can improve my strategy this time,” Pacquiao said.

Mayweather has only participated in one professional fight since 2015, the 2017 stoppage of former UFC champion Conor McGregor.

Since then, Mayweather has participated in a handful of global exhibition bouts, including one against Logan Paul, while traveling the world. Recently, reports including a deep dive by Business Insider indicate Mayweather confronts financial peril.

He sued Showtime weeks ago, alleging it shorted him more than $300 million in pay-per-view earnings during his 2013-2017 destiny on the premium cable network.

Pacquiao assesses Mayweather isn’t being lured back by the riches of the fight. Rather, Pacquiao believes, it’s Mayweather’s tell-tale need to secure his legacy against his fiercest rival – men who were interchangeable as the top two pound-for-pound fighters for more than a decade.

“It’s the pressure from the fans: How can he claim he’s the GOAT (greatest of all time). In an analysis of the categories of boxing history, in which one can he say he’s the only one?” Pacquiao asked. “He’s not the only one to retire undefeated.”

Pacquiao said his own unprecedented feat of winning belts in eight divisions – from flyweight in 1998 to junior-middleweight – while winning a welterweight belt in 2019 and fighting two more titles bouts this decade is unmatched.

“I’m not insisting I’m the GOAT. It’s hard to raise up your own chair, but claiming those eight divisions is the hardest record in boxing, and the four decades of title fights has never been done,” Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao concedes that, with each man fighting at this age, it’s difficult to use the outcome to separate one from the other.

But if he can add to his existing accolades by being the only man to defeat Mayweather in a professional fight, that may clinch the debate in some minds.

“Whatever happens in this fight will happen, but based upon our accomplishments,” Pacquiao said when asked if the winner earns GOAT status.

“If [Mayweather] wins and helps people and is a good man, he will be considered the GOAT.

“At the end of the day, I’ve learned fame and our position are only temporary. We are here to help others.”

Team Pacquiao: Floyd Mayweather’s record will be 50-1 after rematch

“Better late than never” has been a description attached now to both of the Floyd Mayweather Jnr-Manny Pacquiao fights.

In the first match, Mayweather’s defensive habits and Pacquiao's injured shoulder took all the fun out of the most lucrative prizefight in history.

Now comes word, nearly 11 years after the first bout happened – which was five years after interest in the showdown peaked – that the two International Boxing Hall of Fame inductees will reconvene at the Las Vegas Sphere on September 19 on Netflix. Mayweather is turning 49 on February 24 while Pacquiao is 47.

“It’s happening because Manny looked so good in his last fight [a 2025 draw against recently deposed WBC welterweight titleholder Mario Barrios] and because he is always working out,” Pacquiao’s longtime adviser Sean Gibbons told BS Monday, minutes after the bout was formally announced.

“The fact that Netflix wanted this … the timing is perfect. These guys have been tied together for the past 20 years, so it’s fitting. The fact that both are still capable of fighting at this high of a level, that Manny will be healthy, unlike the first fight, and that it’s a real fight – not an exhibition – makes it so unique.”

Mayweather, 50-0 (27 KOs), hasn’t fought a professional boxing match since his novelty event against then-UFC champion Conor McGregor in August 2017, and his most recent bout with a former boxing titleholder was a win over Andre Berto in September 2015.

Mayweather has fought a string of exhibitions since, including one against Logan Paul. But amid reports of Mayweather’s financial struggles and his recently filed lawsuit against Showtime and its former executive Stephen Espinoza, there’s heightened speculation that Mayweather is more willing than ever to put his cherished “0” in the loss ledger on the line.

“Both guys have been a thorn in the other’s side – in a good way – for so long, standing 1-2 in the pound-for-pound rankings for so long,” Gibbons said.

While Mayweather defeated record eight-division champion Pacquiao by scores of 118-110 and 116-112 (twice) on May 2, 2015, at MGM Grand, the highly anticipated bout was blamed for years for decreasing interest in the sport as Mayweather avoided entertaining exchanges, and Pacquiao aggravated a torn right rotator cuff in the bout and threw limited power punches.

Now, Pacquiao, 62-8-3 (39 KOs), is just seven months removed from nearly taking the belt from Barrios – who surrendered his WBC strap to Ryan Garcia this past Saturday in Las Vegas. Pacquiao has remained in shape while expecting another important bout.

As of now, Pacquiao is slated to meet former Wild Card Boxing Club stablemate Ruslan Provodnikov in an April 18 exhibition in Las Vegas, and Mayweather is due to meet Mike Tyson in an April 25 exhibition in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“With Manny at his highest level, Floyd has a tremendous chance to lose his ‘0,’” Gibbons said. “He made it to 50-0, which is tremendous. It’s going to be 50-1 after this.

“I have always said Manny’s 62-8-3 record is better than Floyd’s 50-0. Manny Pacquiao fought guys in their primes – Juan Manuel Marquez (four times), Marco Antonio Barrera (twice), Erik Morales and Tim Bradley (three times each). Floyd waited for all his guys to get old.

“He’s finally chosen wrong this time.”

Years ago, when Mayweather-Pacquiao I was first announced, those around the bout were highly confident a rematch would occur quickly. The widespread disappointment over the fight quieted calls for that.

What Netflix, Jas Mathur of Manny Pacquiao Promotions and Nicole Craig of Mayweather Promotions are aware of is that the veteran fighters’ names still resonate in an era where novelty bouts including Jake Paul and Tyson draw strong viewership.

And the cost is less – just for the price of a Netflix subscription.

“The first boxing match at the Sphere brings intrigue,” Gibbons said. “Who doesn’t want to see these guys throw down again?”

Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao rematch set for September 19 on Netflix

More than 11 years after they broke box office records, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao are going to have a rematch.

Mayweather-Pacquiao II has been announced for Saturday, September 19 at Sphere, a remarkably designed entertainment venue in Las Vegas, Nevada. Their match will be broadcast for free to Netflix subscribers, the streaming service announced on Monday, soon after a report by Mike Coppinger of The Ring magazine.

This will be the fifth boxing match carried by Netflix. Three have taken place: Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson in November 2024; Katie Taylor’s third fight with Amanda Serrano in July 2025; and Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford this past September. The fourth is set for this April 11, when Tyson Fury will return from his most recent retirement to take on Arslanbek Makhmudov.

“Earlier in my career, I spent weeks in Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao’s training camps in Las Vegas and the Philippines. It was undeniable that they were the two hardest workers in boxing, and their wins and accolades were a product of that,” said Gabe Spitzer, vice president of sports at Netflix, in a press release. “Bringing this rematch to Netflix is a massive ‘full-circle’ moment. We’re thrilled to combine their storied rivalry with the immersive technology of Sphere to deliver a landmark sporting event to our members worldwide.”

Mayweather and Pacquiao are both Hall of Famers and all-time greats who recently came out of retirement. Their first match in May 2015 took place after years of anticipation and failed negotiations, with Mayweather triumphing via a clear unanimous decision.

Last year, Pacquiao returned at the age of 46 after nearly four years away and fought to a draw with then-welterweight titleholder Mario Barrios. Pacquiao is now 47 years old and is 62-8-3 (39 KOs). He is scheduled to take part in an exhibition bout with Ruslan Provodnikov on April 18 in Las Vegas.

“Floyd and I gave the world what remains the biggest fight in boxing history. The fans have waited long enough – they deserve this rematch, and it will be even bigger now that it will be streamed live globally on Netflix,” Pacquiao was quoted as saying in a press release. “I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him.”

Mayweather had multiple retirements during his career, with his last two coming after a September 2015 swan song victory over Andre Berto and then after returning for a huge temptation that Mayweather understandably couldn’t resist, with him stopping UFC star Conor McGregor in a boxing match in August 2017.

Mayweather, who turns 49 on February 24, has been taking part in exhibition matches in the years since, and he recently made a combined set of announcements: confirming an exhibition bout this spring against Mike Tyson, and saying that he would return to professional boxing afterward.

“I already fought and beat Manny once,” Mayweather was quoted as saying in a press release. “This time will be the same result.”

Mayweather-Pacquiao rematch set for September on Netflix

Floyd to exit retirement for official bout at the Las Vegas Sphere 11 years after their disappointing blockbuster in 2015

Eleven years after Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao squared off in the richest fight by far in boxing history — but one that did not come close to living up to the hype — the Hall of Fame greats will meet in a rematch.

They fight, announced on Monday by Manny Pacquiao Promotions and Mayweather Promotions in partnership with CSI Sports/Fight Sports, with whom Mayweather recently signed, is scheduled for Sept. 19 at the Sphere in Las Vegas. The venue will host boxing for the first time and instead of the fight costing $100 on pay-per-view, the price of the first fight, the rematch will stream for free to Netflix subscribers.

The specific number of rounds and the weight were not announced because they have not been agreed to yet, a source involved told Fight Freaks Unite, although the source said it would be scheduled for either 10 or 12 rounds and likely “around 150 pounds.” Also still needing to be ironed out are the specific terms for drug testing, which was a massive issue in negotiations for their first fight, the source said.

“I already fought and beat Manny once,” Mayweather said in a statement. “This time will be the same result.”

Pacquiao, who lost a clear decision to Mayweather in their long-awaited historic 2015 showdown, has campaigned for a rematch.

“Floyd and I gave the world what remains the biggest fight in boxing history,” Pacquiao said in a statement. “The fans have waited long enough. They deserve this rematch, and it will be even bigger now that it will be streamed live globally on Netflix. I want Floyd to live with the one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him. As always, I dedicate this fight to my fellow Filipinos around the world and to bringing glory to the Philippines.”

Paddy Power have opened with FM at 1.57, the draw at 16.0 and PacMan at 2.4.

That’s 4/7, 16/1 and 7/5 respectively. Which is about what I remember the first fight being? Maybe even closer?

How have I talked myself into this being good

The first one almost killed my love of boxing. I'm staying clear of this one for that reason.

It's an embarrassing pantomime that will only appeal to Carling drinkers.

I love Pacquiao and his exciting style, and yes he did have many component wins where he preformed much better… Hatton, DLH, Cotto. However, I simply cannot have him ahead of Mayweather. Pacquiao had some losses and clear losses that Mayweather didn’t have. DLH and Hatton also were clearly superior in the Mayweather fights.

The clincher for me is Marquez. Pacquiao and Marquez will be forever tied together. In fact, I would say that whilst it was 2-1-1 officially to Pacquiao, that could easily be 3-1 or even 4-0 Marquez. The third fight was definately Marquez’ . The second one was closest for me.

Mayweather completely dominated and outclassed Marquez and did the same vs Manny. I think it has to be Mayweather ahead of Manny.

Is this gonna be an officially sanctioned fight, one which will count on their pro records ?

If so the glorious possibility of Floyd losing his 0 might entice me to tune in to this.
