MURRAY KEEPS ROLLING

Post by Brian Tomas »

Murray keeps rolling By Dave Spencer, FightNews Canada

A name familiar to Canadian fight fans, Lightweight John Murray of Manchester England has received the prestigious Geoffrey Simpson award given by the British Boxing Press for young boxer of the year. Murray fought in Gatineau Quebec a year ago this month and was impressive in a knockout win of Tyrone Wiggins. Since that time Murray has posted three more wins, pushing his record to 18-0 and capturing his first championship belt, the WBC Youth championship. Talk is of Murray returning to Canada at some point, possibly next March in Montreal . Murray joins the likes of Barry McGuigan, Frank Bruno, Nigel Benn, Naseem Hamed, Ricky Hatton and Amir Khan who have won the award in the past. Like last year’s winner Kevin Mitchell, Murray would like a shot at Olympic Games silver medalist Amir Khan. “The best fight out there would be against Amir Khan,” said promoter Mick Hennessy, “I understand Khan is looking to fight for a title before the end of the year. Like John, he wants to win world titles in the future and according to a lot of people he will achieve that.

i cant better your homer simpson award, but as this is the british forum maybe we could create something similar along the same lines.murray could be nominated for the audley harrison award, given to a fighter who takes one step forward givin it large, followed by three steps back in ignominous retreat.

  Can't beat your Audley Harrison award either. How about an award for the fighter who gets knocked on their arse and keep on getting back up, The Rubber Ball Award, can you better Herbie Hide against Bowe.

He should get the O.J. Simpson award , he's going to take a few peoples heads off at his new weight. Making the weight was one thing , but to be strong is another.
I look for big things from this lad at the higher weight , he did not have the pop his last time out. I was disappointed that he pulled out of that fight , but by years end I am sure he will take a large step up in class and look great.
