Emanuel Navarrete vs. Charly Suarez II - Who wins a rematch?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Charly Suarez adamant rematch with Navarrete will come next

Last May, Charly Suarez headed to San Diego and nearly upset Emanuel Navarrete for the WBO junior lightweight title.

Suarez, rated No. 5 by The Ring at 130 pounds, gave Navarrete all he could handle through seven rounds when a cut to the defending champion brought an abrupt end to their fight. Many felt the cut came from a punch, but an instant replay ruled it from a clash of heads, and the fight declared a no-contest.

Due to the controversial nature of how the fight ended a rematch looked in order. However, Suarez had to wait while Navarrete met IBF ruler Eduardo Nunez in a unification.

Navarrete posted a hugely impressive 11th round stoppage to add the IBF title to his WBO and moved to the No. 1 position in The Ring's latest ratings.

Suarez, who had travelled from his home in Manila to Glendale to witness the fight first hand, enjoyed what he saw.

"It was an excellent performance from Navarrete," Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs) told The Ring. "He dominated his opponent, Nunez.

"He showed his eagerness to become a unified champion. His stamina, his movement were excellent."

While some would have been shouting loudly for their shot in light of the first fight, that's not Suarez's style and the 37-year-old remains calm about what happened 10 months ago.

"I have feelings that it's an injustice, but I respect the decision of the referee and judges," he said. "I am thankful to fight for the world championship against Navarrete. It's not in my control, I do my best in the ring, outside the ring it's not my control. I accept it and I pursue my dreams."

Afterwards, Suarez was given some encouragement from Navarrete as well as fans in attendance.

"He told me, 'Navarrete and Suarez II for the belts,'" said the Filipino. "I'm happy and it's an honor to hear those words come from him.

"Not only Filipino people but people around the world they want the rematch. The Mexican people when we go outside told me, 'Navarrete-Suarez 2.' They're waiting on social media; they're asking, 'What's next for Navarrete?' I'm happy to hear that.

"I'm waiting for the time and moment. The WBO sent a letter mandating the winner of this fight [faces me.] I'm happy. It takes so long but on Saturday it was clear to me that it's possible. I'm praying that I'm next for Navarrete."

The two sides have 30 days, which is until March 28 to come to an agreement or the fight will go to purse bids. The WBO also said the fight must take place within 120 days of the fight, which is June 28th.

Hungry Charly Suarez wants Emanuel Navarrete rematch in Las Vegas

Charly Suarez flew across the Pacific Ocean to be in Arizona this past weekend to watch his old rival Emanuel Navarrete unify two of the junior lightweight title belts against Eduardo Nunez. He had a good vantage point to watch as Navarrete scored one of the biggest victories of his career, battering Nunez into submission before the fight was stopped in the 11th round.

Navarrete’s dominance surprised many in the boxing world, but it didn’t surprise Suarez.

“I wasn’t surprised at all. I think he did excellently and you can tell that he was in great condition,” said Suarez, 18-0 (10 KOs), a 2016 Olympian from San Isidro, Davao del Norte, Philippines.

Suarez was likely the most interested observer in attendance as the World Boxing Organization had ordered Suarez to face the winner next, with the sanctioning body granting a 20-day negotiation period, after which the fight will have to take place within 120 days.

Suarez is being represented in negotiations by promoter Chavit Singson and an attorney by the name of Ricardo Navalta. Navarrete is represented by his promoter, Top Rank.

Suarez says he had a brief interaction with Navarrete, 40-2-1 (33 KOs), after the fight.

“He called on me as I was standing at ringside and asked me to come closer so we can take a picture together. Then he said, ‘Suarez-Navarrete II’ while making a gesture pointing on his waist, indicating a fight for the belts,” said Suarez.

Delfin Boholst, the manager/trainer for Suarez, says they will be pushing themselves to the limit to get the win in this fight.

“In the preparation, I'll pour all my skills and research into how to increase Charly's skills and conditioning. Charly and I will give it our all to win the fight,” said Boholst, a former national team boxer and trainer.

Suarez, 37, gave Navarrete all he could handle in their first meeting last May in California, before the fight was stopped at the beginning of the eighth round due to a cut over Navarrete’s left eye. Originally ruled by referee Edward Collantes to be caused by an accidental headbutt, Navarrete was ruled the technical decision winner before the fight was changed to a no-contest by the California State Athletic Commission.

Replay footage showed that Navarrete’s cut was caused by a punch, which would have made Suarez the winner by technical knockout.

While Navarrete’s win likely makes him a bigger favorite in the rematch, he knows it also means the fight is now bigger the second time around. Suarez says he plans to make the most of this next opportunity.

“This is a good fight in our division. People are looking forward to it, especially the Mexicans and Filipinos,” said Suarez, who hopes the rematch takes place in Las Vegas.

“The opportunity comes to me only once, and I hope I can achieve my dream of becoming a world champion. By God's grace and will, he will give it to me. Let's do everything for it.”

I mean.. he was down on points.

Also,
I have a feeling. Had they known it was caused by a punch, they’d probably let it go on longer.

Like I said. They probably wouldn’t have stopped it.

Same way they didn’t stop Fury. I know Nava is small fry compared to him, but there’s politics everywhere.

Yh, you’re right tho. He should have. What can we do. Scams happen everywhere

ya that is true, i am waiting for a comission to slip up one day in a case like this and say the reason they didnt change it to a loss rather than a no contest is cuz the guy's cut actually wasnt that bad and he would have continued if they ruled it a punch

WBO Orders Emanuel Navarrete To Fight Charly Suarez Next

Emanuel Navarrete’s next fight will come against a familiar opponent.

The WBO has ordered Navarrete (40-2-1, 33 KOs, 1 NC) to fight Charly Suarez next. The IBF and WBO champion is being asked to immediately engage in discussions as both sides have just 20 days to lock in a deal. If an agreement is not in place by the deadline, the sanctioning body will take matters into its own hands.

“Please be advised that the WBO World Championship Committee has unanimously voted to order negotiations between Unified WBO/IBF Jr. Lightweight Champion, Emanuel Navarrete & the #1 world-rated contender & mandatory challenger, Charly Suarez to discharge pending mandatory obligation,” WBO President Gustavo Olivieri wrote on his X account. “The parties are granted twenty (20) days to reach terms. Failing an agreement, purse bid proceedings will be ordered in accordance with WBO regulations. The minimum bid for the Jr. Lightweight (130 lbs.) division is set at $150,000.”

Navarrete and Suarez first fought on May 10, 2025, at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. Heading in, most expected Navarrete, who was attempting to defend his WBO 130-pound belt for the fourth time, to win fairly easily. But Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs, 1 NC) fought brilliantly. In the sixth, Navarrete suffered a brutal cut over his left eye in what appeared to be a clash of heads. By the eighth, the wound was deemed too severe and the fight was stopped.

Since it was ruled a head clash by referee Edward Collantes, the judges were asked to hand in their scorecards. Pat Russell scored it 78-75 for Navarrete while Lou Moret and Fernando Villarreal had it 77-76, also in favor of Navarrete.

However, after further review, it was revealed that a punch from Suarez, not a clash of heads, was the reason for Navarrete’s gash. Had the stoppage been ruled as a result of a punch, Suarez would've won by technical knockout. Their contest was later ruled a no-contest by the California State Athletic Commission.

Suarez has remained on the sidelines since then. Navarrete, on the other hand, is coming off a spectacular 11th-round stoppage over Eduardo Nunez to add his IBF 130-pound strap to his collection on February 28, at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale Arizona.

Emanuel Navarrete-Charly Suarez II ordered (again) by the WBO

Charly Suarez could get his rematch with Emanuel Navarrete, this time with an additional world title on the line.

The WBO has ordered Navarrete-Suarez II, sanctioning body president Gustavo Olivieri announced this morning. The fighters have 20 days to reach an agreement. Barring an extension to the negotiating period, the bout would then be sent to a purse bid, with the minimum bid amount set at $150,000.

Navarrete, 40-2-1 (33 KOs), a three-division titleholder, has held the WBO belt at 130lbs since February 2023 and just added the IBF title last month after stopping Eduardo Nunez in the 11th round of their unification match.

That was Navarrete’s first fight since his controversial no-contest against Suarez this past May.

Navarrete suffered a cut over his left eyebrow in the sixth round that was bad enough for the bout to be stopped at the start of the eighth. The referee had ruled that the cut was caused by an accidental clash of heads, which meant the fight would be sent to the scorecards. Navarette was named the winner by narrow technical decision.

Except that would prove to be the wrong ruling – and therefore the wrong result.

Replay footage had initially seemed inconclusive until about 30 minutes after the stoppage, when it became clear that the cut had actually been caused by a shot from Suarez. That meant Suarez should have been the TKO winner.

Weeks later, the California State Athletic Commission recognized that it didn’t want to end Navarrete’s title reign after the fact through a commission meeting. So it instead overturned Navarrete’s win into a no-contest, and the WBO ordered a rematch with Suarez, 18-0 (10 KOs), who had been and remains the top-ranked mandatory challenger.

Suarez, a 37-year-old from the Philippines, hasn’t fought since then. While he is also ranked 11th by the WBC, he is not currently rated by either the IBF or WBA.

The first fight was a robbery and should have been a tko win for Suarez.
That being said, I'd have Navarrete winning a rematch. Either on points or late stoppage. He is a great, if not always top form fighter.

CHARLY SUAREZ SIGNS PROMOTIONAL DEAL WITH SAMPSON BOXING

Charly Suarez has secured additional backing to get the meaningful bout he desires.

Suarez has signed a promotional deal with Sampson Boxing, it was announced on Wednesday, one week after the WBO ordered a rematch between Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs, 1 NC) and WBO and IBF junior lightweight champion Emanuel Navarrete (40-2-1, 33 KOs, 1 NC).

Suarez is the WBO No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger, and the 37-year-old Filipino hasn't fought since facing Navarrete for the WBO title in a controversial clash on May 10 in San Diego.

The hotly contested contest was stopped a second into the eighth round when a ringside physician determined Navarrete couldn’t continue after suffering a cut near his left eyebrow. Suarez was surging and coming on strong at the time the fight suddenly ended.

Originally, it was ruled that the cut was caused by a headbutt and Navarrete was awarded a technical decision win. However, previously unavailable replay footage emerged within the hour after the fight ended, which showed it was actually a legal punch from Suarez that sliced Navarrete’s skin.

On June 2, the California State Athletic Commission ruled the fight a No Contest.

At the time, Navarrete promoter Top Rank said Suarez would get a much-deserved rematch, but the Mexican fighter ultimately moved on to a title unification clash against Eduardo Nunez last month, stopping his fellow Mexican in 11 rounds for the IBF title.

“I am very happy to officially join Sampson Boxing and to work with Sampson Lewkowicz, who has guided many world champions in the sport,” Suarez said in a statement.

Lewkowicz currently handles a deep roster of fighters featuring David Benavidez, Sebastian Fundora and Gabriela Fundora, among others.

“This is an important step in my career as I continue my pursuit of a world title,” said Suarez. “I have worked my entire life for this moment, from representing the Philippines in the Olympics to competing on the world stage as a professional. With Sampson’s experience and commitment, I believe we have the right team to bring my career to the next level.

“My goal remains the same: to bring pride to the Philippines as a soldier and a world champion boxer.”

Navarrete is ranked No. 1 by The Ring at 130 pounds; Suarez is rated fifth.

Charly Suarez deepens Emanuel Navarrete pursuit by retaining Sampson Lewkowicz

In a sport that can be all about the connections, unbeaten super-featherweight challenger Charly Suarez has aligned with a veteran insider in his bid to land a rematch with newly unified champion Emanuel Navarrete.

The 37-year-old Suarez, 18-0 (10 KOs), announced Wednesday that he is now represented by promoter Sampson Lewkowicz, who is fast at work aiming to make Navarrete-Suarez II now that Navarrete promoter Top Rank has a new streaming deal in place with DAZN.

Lewkowicz has said he believes Navarrete-Suarez II can be one of the first main-event offerings in the new Top Rank-DAZN alliance, revisiting a May 10 battle in San Diego that closed in controversy.

In that first meeting, Mexico’s three-division champion Navarrete 40-2-1, (33 KOs), was first awarded a unanimous technical decision by scores of 77-76, 78-75, 77-76 after eight rounds when California State Athletic Commission officials couldn’t immediately conclude if a punch or accidental head butt caused a fight-ending cut over Navarrete’s eye.

Since the in-ring ruling was an accidental head butt, Navarette was declared the winner. Minutes later, a clearer ESPN replay emerged indicating the cut was caused by a Suarez punch, which should’ve made Suarez the winner.

The California commission later changed the outcome to a no-contest, and the WBO ordered a Navarrete-Suarez rematch.

Navarrete instead moved to a February 28 unification versus IBF champion Eduardo “Sugar” Nunez, winning an impressive unanimous decision in Glendale, Arizona, and saying afterward he was open either to the Suarez rematch or a shot at WBC 130lbs champion O’Shaquie Foster.

Former featherweight champion Raymond Ford is also reportedly interested in fighting Foster.

“That’s the plan. Great fight,” an official connected to Ford-Foster negotiations told BS Wednesday.

The disputed outcome of the first Navarrete-Suarez bout make it a compelling draw, as 2016 Olympian Suarez toiled in the Philippines, taking five fights there and Vietnam in 2022 before coming to the U.S. in 2023 and parlaying a 2024 TKO of Texas’ Jorge Castaneda to the title shot.

Lewkowicz will surely emphasize how Suarez gave a sterling account of himself versus Navarrete in toe-to-toe conflict, and Top Rank officials, who’ve long worked with the promoter, are warm to the idea of a rematch given how strongly Navarrete performed after easily making weight versus Nunez.

"This is an important step in my career as I continue my pursuit of a world title," Suarez said of joining forces with Lewkowicz. "I have worked my entire life for this moment... With Sampson's experience and commitment, I believe we have the right team to bring my career to the next level.

"My goal remains the same: To bring pride to the Philippines as a soldier and a world champion."

SUAREZ RETURNS JULY 11 AHEAD OF POSSIBLE NAVARRETE REMATCH

World-rated junior lightweight Charly Suarez will end a yearlong hiatus return on July 11.

Suarez, who is rated No. 5 by The Ring at 130 pounds, will face Manuel Avila over 10 rounds at Civic Center in San Francisco.

"I'm grateful to be back in the ring this July," Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs) told The Ring. "Staying active is important for me, but my focus hasn't changed."

To some, Suarez was unlucky not to win Emanuel Navarrete's WBO title last May when a cut over the Mexican's eye was deemed a head clash and not from a punch and the fight ended in an eighth round no-contest.

Navarrete returned in February to score what maybe a career best win over Eduardo Nunez to add the IBF junior lightweight title to his WBO title.

The WBO announced shortly afterwards that Navarrete had to face Suarez next.

Avila is seen as a stay-busy fight before the rumored rematch which could take place in September.

"I believe I did enough to win against Emanuel Navarrete, and I'm looking forward to the rematch to prove that — this time without any questions," he said.

Avila (25-2-1, 9 KOs) won 22 consecutive fights before tasting defeat to future world champion Joel Diaz (UD 10) in 2017.

Since then, he's fought just five times, including a stoppage loss to three-time world title challenger Joet Gonzalez (TKO 6) in July 2019. This fight will end a three-year.

WBO: Lomachenko can fight Navarrete after Suarez gets his shot

The WBO won’t let Vasiliy Lomachenko skip the line.

As reported by The Ring’s Mike Coppinger, the three-division world champion is planning to end a two-year retirement in the fall, with one of his desired opponents being Emanuel Navarrete, the WBO and IBF junior lightweight champion.

The WBO informed The Ring that it is willing to let Lomachenko get a crack at the unified champion, but not until Navarrete fights Charly Suarez.

Shortly after beating Eduardo Nunez to unify the 130-pound titles, the WBO ordered Navarrete to fight Suarez, his mandatory challenger.

The two fought last May and with Suarez being the heavy underdog. Despite that, he had plenty of success and gave Navarrete a serious fight.

Navarrete (40-2-1, 33 KOs, 1 NC) initially won a technical decision after suffering a cut which stopped the fight in the eighth round. The cut was believed to have been caused by an accidental headbutt and Suarez was down just one point on two judges' scorecards. However, the decision was eventually overturned to a No Contest as the large gash that opened up over Navarrete’s left eye was proven to be the result of a punch, not a clash of heads.

Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs, 1 NC) will first take a stay-busy fight against Manuel Avila on July 11. Navarrete will have to fight him immediately after.

In the meantime, Lomachenko, who held Navarrete’s WBO 130-pound title in 2016, could wait around for the winner. He may also go down another path.

Gervonta Davis was also mentioned as someone Lomachenko (18-3, 12 KOs) wants to get his hands on. The two were initially in discussions to fight at the end of 2024, shortly after “Loma” beat George Kambosos for the IBF lightweight title.
Those discussions never gained any traction, however, and soon after, Lomachenko abruptly retirement

Charly Suarez keeps leverage by staying in 130lbs title-rematch position

Charly Suarez’s yearning for the WBO junior-lightweight belt is fierce.

Much of that is rooted in the belief of the WBO No. 1-ranked contender that he won the May 2025 bout against current unified champion Emanuel Navarrete when a video replay system failed to show quickly enough that Suarez had cut Navarrete with a punch.

The referee’s ruling that an accidental headbutt caused the cut sent the bout to the scorecards, and a thin victory by Navarrete was later changed to a no-contest by the California State Athletic Commission, with a rematch ordered.

Fighting for the first time since that San Diego bout, Suarez, 18-0 (10 KOs), returns to the ring Saturday night versus Manuel Avila, 26-2-1 (9 KOs), in the co-main event of Saturday night’s ProBoxTV card at the Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino, California, a bout for a minor WBO belt that will keep him positioned for a shot at Navarrete.

More than that, Suarez recently declined another bout that would have represented his richest purse yet, telling his promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, that he prioritizes the 130lbs championship belt over purse money.

In Avila, Suarez meets a 34-year-old who has taken two three-year sabbaticals from the ring since 2019.

Victory will keep Suarez positioned for that rematch with unified WBO/WBA champion Navarrete, although the expectation is that the WBO will permit Navarrete to stage a unification bout against WBC champion and fellow Top Rank fighter O’Shaquie Foster if those sides successfully conclude ongoing negotiations.

Boxing Scene reported previously that former three-division champion Vasiliy Lomachenko is targeting Suarez for his return bout, and now that Navarrete and Foster are in talks, a Suarez-Lomachenko winner would be fighting the Navarrete-Foster winner for three belts.
