Chris Eubank Jr in talks for ‘fire fight’ but wants opponent to make a catchweight

Chris Eubank Jr’s return to the ring seems to be edging ever closer.

Eubank’s rivalry with Conor Benn dominated 2025. He won the first fight but lost the second convincingly, leading many fans to questions whether or not retirement was on the cards. Following treatment in hospital for an undisclosed health condition, the 36-year-old is now plotting a comeback.

According to Chris Mannix, that could come against Edgar Berlanga. Speaking on the DAZN broadcast for Emanuel Navarrete and Eduardo Nunez’ unification bout this past weekend in Arizona, he revealed ongoing discussions.

“Edgar Berlanga has been sorting through what he’s going to do in his next fight, but I’ve been told there are plans in the works to bring Edgar back in the first half of this year. An interesting fight has been discussed with Team Berlanga, and that is a potential showdown with Chris Eubank Jr.

“[Eubank] is moving back up in weight, and they have discussed a fight … What is holding up those talks is the weight. Eubank Jr, I’m told, wants the fight at 164 pounds. Berlanga says I can’t go any lower than 168. Can they work it out? I don’t know, but that’s a big fight.”

Supporting the report, Berlanga – who has lost to Canelo on points and, more recently, Hamzah Sheeraz by stoppage – took to X to talk the fight up.



Fans may be surprised at Eubank’s desire for a catchweight over a straight move to super-middleweight, particularly given his documented struggles making 160 for the two Conor Benn fights. However, the rehydration of only 10lbs may have been the real test in those stadium bouts, and there would be no such clause this time around.

The Brit’s team may also be thinking about the catchweight as more of a disadvantage to Berlanga – who has fought at 168 since 2020 – rather than an advantage for their man.

Whatever the reason, it seems Berlanga will not budge on the 4lbs.

Edgar Berlanga has called for a "firefight" with Chris Eubank Jr.

The super middleweight is searching for a route back to prominence after being brutally stopped by Hamzah Sheeraz in Queens, New York IN "The Ring III" main event last July.

The former world title challenger has decided that a fight with another high profile Briton offers him the ideal opportunity. On Sunday, Berlanga took to X and posted: “Me and Chris Eubank Jr. will be a fire fight in LONDON."

Over the weekend, Chris Mannix reported that while talks are advancing, the major stumbling block is Eubank's insistence that the fight takes place at 164 pounds, a weight that 28-year-old Berlanga (23-2, 18 KOs) hasn’t made since 2019.

Eubank (35-4, 25 KOs) spent most of 2025 talking about the difficulties of making the middleweight limit of 160 pounds and adhering to a morning after 10-pound rehydration limit for his two fights with Conor Benn.

In April, Eubank overcame the struggles and battled to a thrilling unanimous decision victory over his hated rival. The Fight won The Ring’s 2025 Fight of the Year award.

A rematch was inevitable but the 36-year-old was a shadow of himself during the November return and lost a wide unanimous decision.

Two weeks later he revealed that he had been struggling with health issues and wouldn’t box until he was back to 100 percent fitness.

It seems like Eubank has got to the bottom of his problems and stepping directly into a fight with the aggressive, heavy-handed Berlanga would be a meaningful - and potentially dangerous - return to action.

When’s the last time Jr beat a live opponent who wasn’t shot ? Korobov maybe and that wasn’t a real win.

I like Chris and I respect the career he’s had but the last half a decade at least has been a prolonged game of smoke and mirrors

The narrative that Eubank was tight as 160 was to sell the fight with Benn. He never hydrated more than the clause in his previous fights. He wants 164 because he's not physically big enough for a 168'er who hydrates up.

In footage shared by Fight Hub TV, Berlanga vowed to ‘smack’ Eubank Jr should he attempt to hit him with any eggs in the build-up to a potential clash, a controversial stunt that he pulled prior to his first bout with Benn last year.

Berlanga eager for Eubank Jr. battle in England

A rematch with WBO champ Hamzah Sheeraz isn't the only fight for which Edgar Berlanga would make a transatlantic trip to England.

The rejuvenated super middleweight contender considers a bout with Chris Eubank Jr. perhaps the most profitable option in the immediate future for both boxers. Eubank has expressed interest in potentially battling Berlanga, who stopped Steven Butler in the seventh round Sunday night of his first fight since Sheeraz beat him by fifth-round knockout a year ago.

“I’m looking forward to getting a real big fight with Chris Eubank,” Berlanga told The Ring. “I want that fight. And I told Dana [White], Nick Khan, tKeith Connolly, my manager, ‘Let’s do it in London. It’s gonna be big. We gonna do some numbers over there.’

“Because Chris Eubank is a sh*t-talker and he comes to fight. You know me, you get me started and I become a sh*t-talker and I love to fight. So, everything just makes sense. I feel like a fight between me and him at the end of the year would be big, especially in London.”

Eubank (35-4, 25 KOs), of Brighton, England, hasn’t fought since rival Conor Benn beat him by unanimous decision in their 12-round rematch November 15 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Eubank, 36, suffered two knockdowns during the final round of that bout, but he was depleted physically from dropping down to the middleweight limit of 160 pounds.

A return to the super middleweight maximum of 168 could re-energize Eubank, who hasn’t fought that high in weight since he defeated former champ James DeGale by unanimous decision in February 2019.

Signing with Zuffa Boxing could entice Eubank as well because the emerging promotional company has paid purses above market value to secure proven, marketable boxers since it officially launched in January.

Zuffa added Berlanga to its roster in April, six weeks after it signed Benn (25-1, 14 KOs), who will challenge WBC welterweight champ Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs, 1 NC) on September 12 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Berlanga (24-2, 19 KOs) had to get off the canvas late in the second round of his Zuffa debut. The 29-year-old Brooklyn native responded by hammering Montreal’s Butler (38-6-1, 32 KOs) until referee Eric Dali halted their scheduled 10-rounder at 1:14 of the seventh at Madison Square Garden’s Infosys Theater in New York.

Berlanga would gladly fight in Eubank’s proverbial backyard after headlining back-to-back events in his hometown.

“Everybody would be tuned in for that sh*t,” Berlanga said. “He’s a fly dude, I’m a fly dude, he talks sh*t and seems open to it. Right now, he’s not signed with nobody, so I think he’s in a position where he’s looking who to sign with.

“But he knows – for real, for real – at 168, the bag is with me and him. I feel like he could make money with [WBA champ Jaime] Munguia or one of these guys, but what I feel makes sense is with me and him.”

You can't say making 160 drained you if you don't go up to the next weight class after saying that because then you're just full of sh*t. Just another guy looking for an excuse.

The issue was never making 160. He made a big deal about it in the first fight, it was a selling point. Barely mentioned in rematch. But in both fights, he definitely would have felt it due to the rehydration
