Marvelous Marvin Hagler Last Great Performance 40 Years Ago.

Post by elmersalsa »

Today marks the last great performance of one of the greatest middleweights in boxing history, the great Marvelous Marvin Hagler of Brockton, MA.

Marvelous successfully defended his middleweight crown for the 12th time, eleven by knockout, against future champion John "The Beast" Mugabi of Uganda in 10 rounds.

It was reported that Marvelous had enough of the sport and wanted to retire. Marvelous was quoted saying: "It's hard to keep the hunger when you're sleeping with silk pajamas!"

It was 40 years ago this day of March 10, 1986 in Las Vegas, NV

I believe it was 11 rounds, no?

My favourite anecdote here involves Michael J Fox telling SRL at ringside to shut up and have another beer after Ray said that he thought he could beat this level of Marvin.

This ties in to a fascinating (to me) ringside exchange between Duran and Leonard after Duran had just lost to Hagler. According to George Kimball, Duran spotted Leonard at ringside and called out "you fight him, you win!".

Mugabi was never the same force after this battle. In my opinion that shouldn't detract from Haglers victory. He went toe to toe with a skillful, unbeaten puncher in the twilight of his career and he won decisively.
