It doesn't look to me like he had every fought the same way that he had did earlier, fast and ultra-aggressive , once he won a title belt from Mike Weaver tho

The drugs hurt him. He never developed fully, and there were a couple of others guys around that could have beaten him even at his best.

He was like several other guys of his era. Had some talent, looked good in some fights and awful in others.

I remember when he was getting in title contention and was on TV twice against Ocasio. Looked mediocre in getting draw. In the rematch, stopped Ocasio in the first round.
He was lucky to get the decision against Chaplin in a lethargic performance.
Also remember when he fought Holyfield. He had not fought anyone good in several years and was almost an afterthought. He fought a very good fight until he was stopped.

Wish he would have fought more guys like Witherspoon, Thomas, Page, Tubbs etc.

I wanted Michael Dokes to fight the great Larry Holmes. That never happened. He was a very fast heavyweight for his size. And could also hit. His fights with Mike Weaver in 1982 was something else.

I thought Weaver beat him by 3 pts in their 2nd fight. Dokes at his best would have given Larry Holmes trouble.

He was lucky to get a draw in that second Weaver fight, I thought he clearly lost. I think that was one of the best fights Weaver had, handling a prime Dokes like he did that night.

He could have been so much better than he turned out to be. Drugs ruined him.

Michael would not have been able to handle Larry's jab.

Larry used to spar with him in the late 70's and commented on it.

I thought everone at the time thought it was close. I thought it could have gone either way. Maybe a draw. This was a very close fight and Dokes did not look good.

chaplin himself said that it was the right decision. lethargic and unimpressive yes, but a dokes win for sure. to say dokes was lucky is nonsense

Agreed. But I thought when I saw it years ago that Dokes took it, albeit looking bad.
