Jesse Rodriguez reportedly moving to bantamweight to face Antonio Vargas

Pound-for-pound great “Bam” Rodriguez might be moving up to challenge WBA bantamweight champ Antonio Vargas

The historically reliable Julius Julianis reports that unified super flyweight champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez will move to bantamweight to challenge WBA titlist Antonio Vargas on a date to be determined.

No word as to whether it’s a permanent move or a pit stop while IBF super flyweight champion Willibaldo Garcia, who stands between Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs) and undisputed status, deals with mandatory challenger Andrew Moloney next month in Kyrgyzstan. Rodriguez has effectively laid waste to the division, destroying fellow titlists Phumelela Cafu and Fernando Martinez with little difficulty, so I don’t think anyone’s going to give him grief for leaving a job unfinished.

Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KOs) went from interim champ to full champ when reigning titlist Seiya Tsutsumi suffered an injury, then successfully defended it in a slugfest with Daigo Higa that saw Vargas score a final-round knockdown to even things up on all three cards. He was supposed to face Tsutsumi in a title consolidation next month, but Tsutsumi isn’t fully healed from his own title consolidation against Nonito Donaire, leaving an opening that Rodriguez is in prime position to fill.

When life gives you lemons and all that.

He probably doesn't want to rush his body along too much. I know everyone wants to see him fight Inoue, but he doesn't need to rush into it without testing the waters at the weight classes against lesser names than that first.

Realistically, it's only 1.5kg per weightclass. I know he's small and that seems like a lot in terms of percentage of his body but it's not that big of a jump with a year to do it. There's a reason that the guys in the lower weights can become 3+ weight world champions without being that good and the best guys in the heavier weightclasses struggle to get more than 2.

1 or 2 weight classes is one thing, but 3 or 4 or 5 begins to be a challenge even at those sizes. Going up to 122 would be his 3rd weight class, that's usually where things at least can start to get tough.

Remember the list of guys who have been Flyweight and Bantamweight Champions or Bantamweight and Featherweight Champions isn't all that long.

To my knowledge there's no other fighter who was ever Champion at 108 who has ever established dominance as a Bantamweight and Jr. Featherweight the way Inoue has.

'Bam' Rodriguez to challenge Vargas for WBA bantamweight title

Unified junior bantamweight champion Jesse "Bam" Rodriguez will make the move up to bantamweight and face WBA champion Antonio Vargas on June 13 in Glendale, Arizona, Matchroom Boxing announced Friday.

Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs) is ESPN's No. 3 ranked pound-for-pound fighter and has been dominant between junior bantamweight and flyweight. He's stopped his last five opponents inside the distance, with Sunny Edwards, Juan Francisco Estrada, Pedro Guevara, Phumelele Cafu and Fernando Martinez all falling victim to Rodriguez. He'll now look to dominate a third weight class with his tenure as a bantamweight starting with WBA champion Vargas.

"New weight class, same goals - dominate and pick up all the belts," Rodriguez said in a statement. "On June 13, I look forward to becoming a three-division World Champion."

Matchroom Boxing also announced they have signed Rodriguez to a multifight extension.

Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KOs) was recently elevated from interim champion to full champion after a fight with Seiya Tsutsumi was unable to come to fruition after the Japanese fighter was sidelined with an injury. He battled Daigo Higa to a draw last July but hasn't lost since a 2019 knockout loss to Jose Maria Cardenas.

"Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and that's exactly why I took this fight," Vargas said. "These are the moments champions live for. I respect his skill, his IQ, everything he brings to the ring. I look forward to defending my WBA World title and I'm ready to prove that I'm one of the best fighters in my weight class."

‘Bam’ Rodriguez-Antonio Vargas Official For June 13 In Glendale

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez’s long-rumored move up to the bantamweight division is official.

Matchroom Boxing, Rodriguez’s promoter, announced Friday that the undefeated, unified junior bantamweight champion will challenge Antonio Vargas on June 13 in Glendale, Arizona. DAZN will stream Rodriguez versus Vargas as a 12-round main event from Desert Diamond Arena.

Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KOs, 1 NC) is expected to defend the WBA 118-pound championship against Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs), who owns The Ring, WBA, WBC and WBO 115-pound crowns.

“New weight class, same goals,” Rodriguez said. “Dominate and pick up all the belts. June 13th I look forward to becoming a three-division world champ.”

Matchroom also announced that Rodriguez, ranked fourth on The Ring’s pound-for-pound list, has signed a multi-fight extension with the promotional company headed by Eddie Hearn.

“Matchroom has been my home for the last four years and I can’t wait to keep making history with them by my side,” Rodriguez said. “Many more world titles to win and new divisions to take over.”

The 26-year-old Rodriguez wanted his next fight to take place in his hometown of San Antonio, where he last fought in April 2023. The card wound up in Glendale because Frost Bank Center, Matchroom’s preferred venue, isn’t available the night of June 13 because it’s reserved for the San Antonio Spurs in case the team is still alive in the NBA playoffs.

Rodriguez has drawn well in the Phoenix area, where he has headlined Matchroom cards three times since February 2022.

The left-handed Rodriguez stopped England’s Sunny Edwards after the ninth round of their December 2023 bout at Desert Diamond Arena. His following fight, a seventh-round knockout of esteemed Mexican Juan Francisco Estrada, took place at nearby Footprint Center in Phoenix in June 2024.

Despite facing Vargas, Rodriguez intends to keep his 115-pound championships, at least temporarily, so that he’ll have the flexibility to return to that division.

He wants to eventually challenge the winner of the junior featherweight showdown between undisputed champ Naoya Inoue (32-0, 27 KOs) and Japanese rival Junto Nakatani (32-0, 24 KOs) on May 2 at Tokyo Dome. Rodriguez remains interested, too, in becoming the fully unified junior bantamweight champion, which would require him to defeat the winner of the bout between IBF champ Willibaldo Garcia (23-6-2, 13 KOs) and mandatory challenger Andrew Moloney (28-4, 18 KOs) on June 6 at Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, Japan.

Rodriguez, a former IBF/WBO flyweight titleholder, could become a champion in a third division by beating Vargas. He won the WBA 115-pound crown from Argentina’s Fernando Martinez (18-1, 9 KOs), who he knocked out in the 10th round of the co-feature of “The Ring IV: Night of Champions” card November 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Vargas, 29, settled for a 12-round unanimous draw with Japan’s Daigo Higa in his most recent action July 30 in Yokohama.

The 2016 U.S. Olympian from Kissimmee, Florida retained the WBA bantamweight title that night. He was elevated from interim champ by the WBA last May, but he was later relegated to champion in recess because a family tragedy prevented him from facing another Japanese opponent, Seiya Tsutsumi, last fall.

Tsutsumi was previously designated the WBA’s bantamweight champion in recess because he couldn’t defend his belt against Vargas due to injuries he suffered during his own unanimous draw with Higa (21-3-3, 19 KOs) in February 2025. With Vargas unavailable, Tsutsumi defended the WBA bantamweight crown when he defeated Nonito Donaire by split decision December 17 in Tokyo.

Tsutsumi (13-0-3, 8 KOs) and Vargas were scheduled to fight last Saturday night on the Tenshin Nasukawa-Estrada undercard in Tokyo, but Tsutsumi hadn’t recovered from injuries sustained during his victory over Donaire, including a facial fracture. The WBA then agreed to sanction Vargas-Rodriguez as a bantamweight title fight.

Bam doing well here, becoming a belt collector.

Would have been nice to collect the IBF title as well, become undisputed.

Willy García only just won the vacant IBF belt

Antonio Vargas relishing star-making challenge against 'Bam' Rodriguez

The 2016 class of Olympians has produced numerous world champions and a trio of stars in Claressa Shields, Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez.

Shields won her second straight gold almost 10 years ago and has since become one of the best female boxers of all time. Stevenson, who won silver at bantamweight, secured his status as a four-division champion after winning The Ring and WBO 140-pound titles in January and is The Ring's No. 3-rated pound-for-pound fighter.

Lopez, who represented Honduras, didn’t medal, but has since gone on to be a two-division titleholder, including becoming the unified lightweight champion in 2020.

Antonio Vargas hasn’t reached that level of stardom in his career, but can change that June 13 when facing Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona on DAZN worldwide.

“It represents a lot because he's a big name, and my name is not that big,” Vargas told The Ring.

“I know beating a guy like this, it’ll put my name on the map, and give me the exposure I’ve been looking for. Every fight is to build a big name, generate big money and big fans, but I’ve got to beat somebody big. When they told me about this guy, I’m like, ‘Wow, this would be the perfect fight.’ After I beat him, it’ll put me where I believe I belong.

“I grew up with Lopez, Stevenson, Shields – we all come from that same era, and they got big names. I feel like I should be on top. When I took the loss, I had to work my way back up, and I’m right there again. So, I’m like, ‘Lord, I believe this is a good season I’m in right now,’ and all I got to do is just get past this guy, and I’ll be on top with my peers.”

Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KOs) is the WBA bantamweight champion in recess, but he and his co-promoter, Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn, expect him to be reinstated as the full champion before facing Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs).

Vargas, of Kissimmee, Florida, won the interim WBA title with a 10th-round stoppage of Winston Guerrero in December 2024. That win began him and Seiya Tsutsumi alternating turns as full champion and champion in recess.

The 29-year-old was elevated to full champion in May 2025 and Tsutsumi (13-0-3, 8 KOs) became the champion in recess when he couldn’t defend his title due to injury. In his lone defense, Vargas fought to a unanimous draw on July 30 against Daigo Higa in Japan.

The death of his mother prevented Vargas from defending the title against Tsutsumi in December 2025, so they swapped titles.

Tsutsumi, 30, defeated future Hall-of-Famer Nonito Donaire by split decision on December 17 in Japan. All signs pointed toward Vargas and Tsutsumi finally fighting on April 11, but the former was still recovering from a facial fracture against Donaire and was unable to defend his title that soon.

“It’s confusing,” Vargas said. “It’s a headache because you want to train, you got a fight date, you want to take the fight and it gets a little frustrating because you don’t want to hit your peak too early. It’s weird. It’s really hard to prepare. I’m just thankful now that I guess that chapter is closed. I got a fight date in front of me, which is almost two months from now. It keeps me level-headed. I’m more focused, and don’t got to worry about Tsutsumi.”

Rodriguez, a two-division champion and The Ring’s No. 4 fighter pound-for-pound, will fight for the first time at bantamweight. The dynamic southpaw from San Antonio, Texas, holds The Ring, WBA, WBC and WBO 115-pound titles and could potentially move back down to junior bantamweight to try and become the undisputed champion.

Along with Rodriguez’s pure boxing ability, Vargas praised his boxing brain and views him as the toughest challenge of his career.

“He likes to press, but it’s his angles, he presses forward, while angling and shifting,” Vargas said. “So that makes him very unique and different. We’ve definitely been training for a style like that. He’s a southpaw, too, so that’s a little different. Got to keep the foot out and know when to shift.

“He has a very high IQ [and] very good resume. He’s beaten a lot of good champions, and it’s definitely one of the best fights on my resume. I’ve definitely been training really hard and preparing. If I’ve got to box the guy or press him, I will. Definitely want to have at least two, three different game plans going into the fight, because I know he’s not just going to have one game plan.”

Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez anticipates tough fight against Antonio Vargas

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez isn’t overlooking Antonio Vargas by any means.

Rodriguez faces Vargas for the WBA bantamweight title on June 13 at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on DAZN. While Rodriguez, The Ring’s No. 4-ranked fighter pound-for-pound, is a significant favorite heading into the clash, he expects that he’ll have to earn it if he’s going to become a three-division champion.

“He's a tough fighter,” Rodriguez said at the press conference in Las Vegas. “He has good speed, so I'm expecting a very tough fight. A lot of people are writing him off just because he doesn't have a big name, but come June 13, I'm expecting a great fight [and] a tough fight from Antonio Vargas. It's just going to make that much of a better fight.”

Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs) holds the Ring, WBA, WBC and WBO 115-pound titles. He last fought on Nov. 22, when he knocked out then-WBA titleholder Fernando Martinez in the 10th round.

Rodriguez’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, said the plan is for Rodriguez, 26, to move back down to 115 pounds in his next fight to try to become the undisputed champion. The dynamic southpaw from San Antonio would have to face the winner of IBF champion Willibaldo Garcia vs. Andrew Maloney, which takes place on June 6 in Japan.

Rather than stay at 115 pounds for a title defense, Rodriguez preferred moving up to face Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KOs). The 2016 U.S. Olympian last fought to a unanimous draw against Daigo Higa on July 30 in Japan.

Vargas, 29, of Kissimmee, Florida, told The Ring he expects to be elevated from champion in recess to full champion ahead of the Rodriguez fight, because the current titleholder, Seiya Tsutsumi (13-0-3, 8 KOs), is sidelined with facial injuries he suffered in his split decision win over Nonito Donaire on Dec. 17.

“The title defense wouldn't have excited me as much as this fight does,” Rodriguez said. “Moving up to another division, trying to conquer another world title against a fighter like Antonio Vargas will push me that much more inside the gym and make me go out there and perform a lot better come fight night.”

Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez: Naoya Inoue showdown is 'inevitable'

Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez is going upscale, getting bigger, both in weight and pound-for-pound clout. But not much else has changed.

Plans and place are the same for a so-called little guy with global ambitions.

Naoya Inoue, Japan’s Rising Son and still on a mission to prove that nobody at any weight is better, is still the target.

“I think that fight is inevitable,’’ Rodriguez said Thursday at a Central Boxing gym crowded with fans who withstood triple-figure temperatures just for the chance at an autograph.

For at least a couple of years, the Rodriguez-Inoue possibility has been there, a dream fight that now has a realistic chance at happening.

Even Inoue mentioned it amid all the hype surrounding his victory over Junto Nakatani in front of a crowd of 55,000 at Tokyo Dome on May 2.

A lot still has to happen, including a Rodriguez victory over World Boxing Association secondary champion Antonio Vargas on June 13 in his bantamweight debut at Desert Diamond Arena in nearby Glendale.

“Win here, and I’ll move on for good from 115 pounds,’’ said Rodriguez, who has the WBC, WBO and WBA super-flyweight belts

Long-term, the Vargas fight is seen as one more step toward Inoue, who has been campaigning at junior-featherweight (122 pounds) and has said he’d also be interested in moving to featherweight.

For Inoue, the most significant factor, however, looks to be age more than weight. He’s 33. The little guys tend to have shorter careers than fighters at heavier weights. Translation: The clock is ticking on how much longer Inoue will be in his prime.

That’s one reason why there’s increased talk about Rodriguez-Inoue sometime in 2027. A past-due date looms for perhaps the biggest fight ever between two little guys.

First, however, there are inevitable moves upscale for the 26-year-old Rodriguez, who said Thursday he was at about 135 pounds. Vargas is an initial test after Rodriguez’ dominant title runs at flyweight and super-fly.

Has anyone seen much of Vargas?

His one loss is a weird one. He got kayoed in under two minutes by a bloke who only won one of his last five fights (against Vargas) - although all of those were against good opposition.

Still, if it taught him a lesson about being switched on early in bouts then it's a good one.

But I don't see much in his record that makes me think he can beat Bam. I'll have a dig around & see if I can find highlights.

Elif Nur Turhan faces Gabriela Tellez in co-feature to Bam vs Vargas

Turhan makes her second defense of the IBF flyweight title, while Tellez makes her first attempt to become a champion

Elif Nur Turhan defends her IBF flyweight title against Gabriela Tellez at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on June 13. The contest serves as the co-feature to Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez vs Antonio Vargas.

Turhan (13-0, 8 KOs) of Turkiye makes the second defense of her belt. The 31-year-old comes off a split decision victory over Taylah Gentzen in January after dethroning Beatriz Ferreira by fifth-round TKO last December.

Tellez (7-0, 3 KOs) makes her first attempt to become a champion. The 19-year-old native of Vero Beach, Florida, was last in action in February, defeating Crystal Garcia Nova by first-round RTD.

Matchroom Boxing announced the clash joining next Saturday’s card via a social media post.

In the main event, San Antonio’s two-division world champion Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs) challenges Antonio Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KOs) of Houston, Texas, for the WBA bantamweight title.

Among the undercard bouts, Ronny Alvarez (6-0, 5 KOs) of Cuba faces Serbia’s Filip Stankovic (9-3, 6 KOs) in a super middleweight matchup.

The undercard also includes:

Arturo Cardenas (17-0-2, 9 KOs) vs. Jordan Martinez (16-0-1, 15 KOs), Cardenas’ WBC Continental Americas super bantamweight title

Adrian Rodriguez (10-0, 6 KOs) vs. Elias Montoya Terraza (13-0, 8 KOs), lightweight

Trini Ochoa (21-1, 9 KOs) vs. Cristian Perez Hernandez (12-4-1, 7 KOs), super lightweight

Hector Beltran (7-0, 5 KOs) vs. Shaquile Felicia (3-1, 1 KO), super welterweight

Elif Nur Turhan vs. Gabriela Tellez added to Bam-Vargas card

A world title fight has been added to the undercard of Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez versus Antonio Vargas on June 13.

Matchroom Boxing announced Thursday that a bout between IBF lightweight champion Elif Nur Turhan and Gabriela Tellez was added to the card, which will take place at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, and be streamed on DAZN.

Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs), The Ring’s No. 4-ranked fighter pound-for-pound, is moving up to 118 pounds to face Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KOs) for his WBA title in the main event.

Turhan (13-0, 8 KOs is The Ring’s No. 1-ranked lightweight. She last fought on Jan. 31, beating Taylah Gentzen by split decision in her first title defense.

The 31-year-old from Turkiye had won four consecutive fights by knockout before facing Gentzen. She won the title with a fifth-round stoppage of Beatriz Ferreira on Dec. 6.

Tellez (7-0, 3 KOs) will be making a big step up in competition to face Turhan. The 19-year-old from Vero Beach, Florida, beat Crystal Garcia Nova by second-round stoppage in her last fight, on Feb. 20.

The Rodriguez-Vargas undercard also includes a rematch between Arturo Cardenas (17-0-2, 9 KOs) and Jordan Martinez (16-0-1, 15 KOs) in a 10-round junior featherweight bout. They fought to a split draw on Feb. 28.

And a 10-round bout between undefeated lightweights Adrian Rodriguez (10-0, 6 KOs) and Elias Montoya Terraza (13-0, 8 KOs) is on the card.

Bam Rodriguez vs Antonio Vargas: WBA title on the line, Vargas again recognized as champion

Yes, Bam Rodriguez will fight for the WBA bantamweight title against Antonio Vargas

Any confusion over the WBA’s bantamweight title situation has been clarified by the sanctioning body, and Antonio Vargas is recognized as the organization’s bantamweight champion heading into next Saturday’s fight with Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez.

The WBA had previously, until a few days ago, listed Seiya Tsutsumi as bantamweight champion, and not Vargas. But their latest update to their rankings does now list Vargas as WBA world champion, with Tsutsumi removed.

Tsutsumi has been moved to “champion in recess” status “due to a medical condition,” according to the WBA.

Over the last year and change, Vargas and Tsutsumi have been in a dance that is strange even by WBA standards. This has not been the standard “super world” and “world” issue people who care about this stuff usually expect to see from the group.

Tsutsumi won the title from Takuma Inoue in October 2024, then defended against Daigo Higa in February 2025. Their bout went to a draw. The WBA ordered a fight between Tsutsumi and Vargas, who was interim champ at the time.

Instead, Tsutsumi became “champion in recess” due to injury, and Vargas was elevated to defend against Higa in July 2025. Their fight also went to a draw.

Vargas has not fought since. In the meantime, Tsutsumi returned, was reinstalled as champ, and successfully defended against Nonito Donaire in December 2025. Tsutsumi’s name appeared on the WBA rankings page, Vargas’ did not.

Now, we’re back to Vargas as the champ recognized by the WBA, and Tsutsumi sidelined. If Rodriguez beats Vargas on Saturday, he will officially have won the WBA bantamweight title, and then if, as anticipated, he moves up to 122 lbs to face Naoya Inoue late this year or in early 2027, the WBA may not even have to fill a vacancy, as Tsutsumi could come back off the shelf and be reinstalled again.

None of this is even meant to pass any aggressive or new judgment on the situation. Boxing’s world titles are hard enough to really take as seriously as you’d want to, unless you’re just extremely passive about it all, and the WBA have the tendency to be the most ridiculous of the four big bodies.

But this is definitely a unique situation, even for the WBA. And if anyone needed any air cleared ahead of Bam vs Vargas, there you go. Yes, Antonio Vargas is recognized as WBA champion, and will be defending against “Bam” Rodriguez

BoxLab Press Release

WBA 118-pound champion Antonio Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KOs) has put the finishing touches on what he describes as the best training camp of his professional career as he prepares to defend his title against pound-for-pound star Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs) in a twelve-round championship showdown on Saturday, June 13th at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Promoted by Matchroom Boxing in association with Boxlab Promotions, it will be streamed live worldwide on DAZN. Rodriguez is moving up from 115 pounds after capturing three world titles in that division. Vargas enters the biggest fight of his career as an underdog determined to prove he belongs among the sport’s elite. As fight night approaches, Vargas says the preparation has been intense, focused, and driven by the opportunity in front of him. "This has honestly been the best camp I've ever had,” said Vargas, “Every day I've been pushing myself beyond my limits as I know what is on the line. When you're preparing to face a fighter like Bam Rodriguez, you can't leave anything to chance. I've surrounded myself with a great team, we've studied everything, and I've put in the work physically, mentally, and emotionally. I feel stronger, sharper, and more confident than ever before, and more importantly my faith in God is lifting me up.

Vargas believes the demanding camp has elevated every aspect of his game and positioned him to deliver a career-defining performance. "We've focused on every detail. The conditioning, the strategy, the sparring, everything has been executed at a championship level,” continued Vargas. “As a world champion, you must continue evolving, and I feel like I've reached another level during this camp. I'm hungry to show the boxing world this version of myself.”

Facing Rodriguez, widely recognized as one of boxing's pound-for-pound best fighters, is a challenge Vargas welcomes with open arms. "I have a lot of respect for Bam Rodriguez and everything he's accomplished in the sport. He's earned his reputation as a pound-for-pound great for a reason. But this is the kind of fight every fighter dreams about. As a champion, you want to face the best and prove yourself against the best. That's exactly what I'm doing on June 13th."

Vargas views the matchup as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. "A lot of people are counting me out, and that's fine. I've been doubted before. What motivates me is knowing that this is my chance to shock the world. I didn't work my whole life to be satisfied with just winning a world title. I want to keep building my legacy. Bam is standing in front of me, and I'm ready to rise to the occasion. Fans should expect a determined champion who's coming to defend his belt with everything he has."

Vargas fully understands the magnitude of the opportunity that lies before him and recognizes that a victory over Rodriguez would be far more than just another successful title defense. Defeating a fighter widely regarded as one of boxing’s pound-for-pound best would validate his place among the sport’s elite, elevate his profile on the global stage, and serve as a defining moment in his career. Despite the potential rewards, Vargas remains focused on the task at hand.

"A win over a fighter like Jesse Rodriguez changes everything,” Vargas stated. “He's considered one of the best fighters in the world, regardless of weight class. Beating someone of that caliber would show everyone that I'm one of the best fighters in the sport. This is the type of victory that can define a career and open the door to even bigger opportunities. I try not to get too caught up in what comes after the fight because my focus has to remain on June 13. But there's no denying what's at stake. This is the biggest moment of my career, and I'm ready to embrace it. I believe this fight will bring out the absolute best version of me."

With millions of boxing fans across the globe expected to tune in on DAZN, Vargas views this title defense against a pound-for-pound star like Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez as a tremendous opportunity to showcase his skills on one of the sport's premier international platforms. Aware of the magnitude of the moment, Vargas is embracing the spotlight and is determined to deliver a memorable performance that resonates with fans watching around the world.

"Defending my world title on DAZN and in front of a global audience means everything to me,” Vargas concluded. “These are the moments fighters work for their entire lives. As Jesus lifts me up, fans from all over the world are going to be watching, and I plan to give them a performance they'll remember while giving all the glory to God. I want people tuning in to see a champion who refuses to back down from any challenge. This platform gives me an opportunity to represent my family, my supporters, my faith, and everyone who has believed in me from the beginning. I'm grateful for the opportunity, but I'm not satisfied just being here. I going to humbly leave Arizona still holding my title and prove that I belong on the biggest stages in boxing."

Boxlab Promotions president Amaury Piedra believes the Rodriguez fight represents the most important challenge of Vargas' professional career and a chance to elevate himself into boxing superstardom. According to Piedra, a win of this magnitude would transform Vargas from a respected world champion into a recognized star, opening the door to major unification bouts, larger events, and greater opportunities on the international stage while solidifying his place among boxing's elite fighters. "Without question, this is the most important fight of Antonio Vargas' career," said Amaury Piedra, President of Boxlab Promotions who promotes Vargas. "He's stepping into the ring against a fighter who is universally recognized as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world. These are the opportunities that define champions and shape legacies. If Antonio wins this fight, it completely changes the trajectory of his career. He won't just be viewed as a world champion; he'll be viewed as one of the elite fighters in boxing. A win over Jesse Rodriguez would instantly become one of the biggest victories in the sport and open the door to major fights and even greater opportunities. We believe in Antonio, we've seen the work he's put in, and we're confident he's prepared to deliver the performance of his life."

Antonio Vargas leans to higher power as Jesse 'Bam' Rodriguez awaits

It feels like a foregone conclusion that unbeaten Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez will win his third divisional title when he takes on WBA bantamweight beltholder Antonio Vargas on Saturday.

While Florida’s Vargas, 19-1-1 (11 KOs), is wearing the strap now and has the pedigree of being a former U.S. Olympic boxer, he’s nearly a 14-to-1 betting underdog and has struggled in his past two bouts versus competition far inferior to Rodriguez, 23-0 (16 KOs).

For the 29-year-old Vargas, however, the widespread lack of belief in his chances is only making him work harder ahead of the DAZN-televised clash at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

“Obviously, I understand he's done a lot of good things in the sport of boxing and he's trying to build a legacy. I respect that part,” Vargas said of Rodriguez. “As for myself, it motivates me to train harder and to really get this win, because I’ve got to beat a big name like this to get the recognition I've been fighting all these years to get.

“It puts me in a place of hunger, discipline and focus, because I know after I beat this guy, it will show I've been training and working hard to build my own legacy as a fighter.”

Vargas emphasized to Boxing Scene that faith has brought him to what “is definitely the biggest fight of my career.”

Vargas said he believes he’s been the beneficiary of divine intervention, pulling from his religious faith to survive knockdowns in two of his past three fights while emerging through last year’s demanding title defense against Daigo Higa in Japan to keep his belt via draw.

“Just looking back on the last few fights, I see the hand of Christ over me, and my confidence in my strength comes from him, and I wouldn't even be in this position to take a fight like this if I wouldn't have got to draw my last fight,” he said.

After rising from the canvas after early fight knockdowns by Jonathan Rodriguez and Winston Guerrero to stop both men in 2024, Vargas gained the draw versus Higa last year by knocking him down late last July.

“One thing I can say – that wasn't me. That was the hand of Christ giving me the strength I needed. To put that guy down just to even the playing field… I know when I need to go into the same place with ‘Bam,’ the same guy who strengthened me and delivered me in my last couple of fights is gonna be the same guy who’s gonna strengthen me, and give me what I need to get the victory,” Vargas said.

“That’s the difference that comes from within myself. I believe on June 13, we're gonna see that, and I'll be able to testify to who he is and how he's been able to strengthen me and help me to overcome.”

That’s deep faith considering three-belt super-flyweight champion Rodriguez, 26, has knocked out or stopped his past five opponents while posting the scalps of the best 115lbs fighters of the prior generation – Juan Francisco Estrada, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and Carlos Cuadras.

With a victory Saturday, Rodriguez is expected to hotly pursue undisputed junior featherweight champion Naoya Inoue for a super-fight in Japan.

Vargas, however, is convinced he's about to thwart the grand plans with help from a higher power.

“Every time I feel that pressure, you can probably see my mouth moving… when I got dropped [by Guerrero] and I was hurt really bad and on the floor, I'm like, ‘Jesus, help me Lord,’” Vargas said. “I remember getting up and I've never dealt with the my legs being wobbly like that, and fear gripped me even more. I remember that the ref gave me the eight-count and I remember once the ref was done man. I remember [Guerrero] coming to finish me. I remember holding him and I went blank the last 30 seconds of that round, and I still was blank in the corner.”

Vargas recalls only the instruction to start winning rounds, and a lesson from the Bible.

“Those who call upon the name of the Lord shall be delivered, and when I cried in my desperation, God heard me. The only part I could take credit about is the training,” he said.

Vargas said beyond the spiritual assistance, he scouts opponents to identify weaknesses he can take advantage of.

What has he taken from the “Bam” sessions?

“He’s been dropped [by Estrada] so there's definitely some openings there,” Vargas said. “Every fighter has them. It's just about finding them, and training hard enough to bring the openings out – catching them between shots and making sure that he hits the canvas.”

Vargas said the fact Rodriguez needs to move up in weight to meet a world champion is another advantage since the champion intends to weigh near 130bs after rehydrating for fight night.

“Over the years, I've been seeing my body grow and develop as a man, so it's definitely a strength – I'm pretty sure people are gonna see the size difference,” he said.

Vargas said he and Rodriguez’s mutual promoter, Eddie Hearn, has motivated him by pointing to the recent bouts as proof he carries “the heart of a warrior.” Hearn advised Vargass to “endure” the Rodriguez pressure and become “the best version of myself.”

Vargas reflected on the start of the journey to get here. He started boxing when his father scoffed at his grade-school’s recommendation that the then nine-year-old Vargas required Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder medication, instead taking him to a boxing gym to burn off the extra energy.

“A week after that, the school said, ‘Hey, the medication is working.’ My dad just smiled and I fell in love with the competition,” Vargas said. “If I could play a role in leading kids off medication and leading them towards sports and health, I would like to be an advocate to help the next generation coming up.”

His voice and mission will certainly resonate if he can find a way to defy the odds and defeat “Bam” Rodriguez.

WBC: Junior Bantamweight Title 'Bam' Rodriguez Held Now Vacant

Jesse ‘’Bam” Rodriguez no longer owns the WBC junior bantamweight title.

The WBC announced its decision Tuesday after Rodriguez, The Ring’s No. 4-ranked fighter pound-for-pound, said he won’t move back down to 115 pounds. Rodriguez (23-0, 16 KOs) will look to become a three-division champion when he challenges WBA bantamweight champ Antonio Vargas (19-1-1, 11 KOs) on Saturday night in a 12-round main event DAZN will stream worldwide from Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

“Following the official announcement of undefeated American boxer Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodríguez moving up in weight, the World Boxing Council formally declares the organization’s world junior bantamweight championship vacant,” the WBC announced on its website. “The WBC expresses its most sincere gratitude to Rodríguez for being a dignified and proud ambassador of the Green and Gold colors, wishing him the absolute best of success in his career.”

Rodriguez, 26, will also relinquish his Ring, WBA and WBO 115-pound championships.

If Rodriguez emerges victorious Saturday, he hopes it’ll set the stage for an eventual showdown against The Ring’s No. 1-ranked fighter pound-for-pound, Naoya Inoue, later this year or in early 2027.

Rodriguez has twice held the WBC 115-pound title. He first won it when he stepped up as a late replacement and beat Carlos Cuadras by unanimous decision to win the then-vacant belt in 2022.

After defending the belt twice, the San Antonio native moved down to 112 pounds for two fights and became a unified champion in 2023.

Rodriguez moved back up to 115 pounds in June 2024 and stopped Juan Francisco Estrada in the seventh round to become the Ring 115-pound champion and claimed the WBC junior bantamweight title for a second time.

The dynamic southpaw went on to become a unified champion at 115 pounds, stopping Phumelela Cafu and Fernando Martinez in 2025 to respectively claim the WBO and WBA titles.
