Devin Haney vs. Rolly Romero - Who wins?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Devin Haney-Rolly Romero May 30 unification in late, 'serious' stage

Rolly Romero says he has signed to fight Devin Haney May 30 in a welterweight unification at Barclays Center in New York, and Haney is in “serious conversations” to finalize the bout, BS learned Thursday.

WBA champion Romero 17-2 (13 KOs) and his Las Vegas neighbor Haney 33-0 (15 KOs), a three-division champion now wearing the WBO welterweight belt, are pegged to fight under the Premier Boxing Champions banner in a Prime Video/PPV.com pay-per-view.

In addition to their common hometown, both are linked to new WBC champion Ryan Garcia.

Haney, of course, was knocked down three times in a 2024 decision loss to Garcia that was overturned to a no-contest due to Garcia’s three positive tests for the banned PED Ostarine while Romero, 30, defeated Garcia in his most recent fight, in May at Times Square.

Also that night, Haney, 27, defeated former unified 140lbs champion Jose Ramirez by unanimous decision.

“No more ball back in this court or that court. I’m signed, sealed and delivered,” Romero posted on “X” Wednesday. “Big boy deal. The Haneys have always been soft and full of lies. I’m going to end y’all for good.”

An official connected to the talks said, “It’s a fight we’re trying to make happen. It’s a fight I hope we can make.”

Devin Haney has expressed that the offer to fight Romero is quality, and BS has learned his father/trainer/manager, Bill Haney, is involved in scrutinizing the details of the financial structure.

Romero has only lost to unbeaten three-division champion Gervonta Davis and WBC interim 140lbs champion Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz.

He answered by knocking down Garcia in the Times Square main event on May 2, winning by unanimous-decision scores of 115-112, 118-109, 115-112.

Haney’s move to Romero delays his anticipated rematch with Garcia after years of acrimony over their 2024 affair at Barclays Center.

By defeating Mario Barrios February 21 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Garcia became a world champion and heightened the appetite for Garcia-Haney II.

Yet, by defeating Romero, Haney would make the bout a three-belt unification and further stoke interest for the showdown.

Since his victory over Garcia, Romero has staved off the effort by WBA mandatory challenger Shakhram Giyasov 17-0 (10 KOs) for a title fight, saying he had never heard of Giyasov while expressing interest in fighting Manny Pacquiao, Shakur Stevenson and Conor Benn instead.

“It’s disrespectful and unfair,” Giyasov manager Vadim Kornilov told BS Thursday. “They’ve been talking to like 10 people … they had a 30-day mandatory notice in October [from the WBA], there was a purse bid. They could’ve applied for an exception … but it doesn’t mean they can just make us wait.”

Kornilov said Giyasov attorney Pat English has written several letters to the WBA encouraging the sanctioning body to enforce the mandatory to no avail.

Giyasov, 32, hasn’t fought since April.

“We’ve been waiting on a response and we’re not looking to fight someone else [in the interim],” Kornilov said. “Manny, Shakur, Conor Benn, and now Haney … how many people are they going to mention before they fight Giyasov?

“He’s fought two eliminators and he’s fought for the mandatory. He deserves his shot now. We’ve given this two years. He’s not looking to do a step-aside [agreement].”

If Romero-Haney gets finalized, however, it may be his best option.

So Romero has never fought someone he does not know? Sounds like When Usyk began fighting at Heavyweight, excuses like nobody knows who he is and he doesn't even speak English were made. I think Romero and his Team are scared to fight Giyasov because a loss would ruin Romero's Marketability and The Money fights will be gone So if he fights Haney and losses he will make lots of Money, and not as much money losing to Giyasov and Yes Romero and his Team consider Giyasov High Risk. The Majority of fighters on Romero's Record he did not know, he was only Padding his record as all fighters do, If Giyasov had no chance, was considered safe or a showcase fight Romero would have no problem fighting him, Romero and his team definitely see Giyasov as a major threat, capable of winning, That is why they are so desperate to get another fight and Haney looks like he will be the opponent.

Romero knows his time as Defending Champion is 1 fight long. He wants to make it count.

Feels like Haney vs Kambosos 3, but with a bigger chance of an upset because at least Rolly has power.

I'd give Haney a ~70% chance to win by decision and even about ~20% chance to beat him by TKO.
The difference in skill is just too big.
Rolly has at best a ~10% chance to win. Would be fun for sure, but very unlikely.

Devin Haney says Rolly Romero unification is likely next

Devin Haney and Rolando Romero are working toward getting a deal done for a welterweight title unification fight on May 30 at the Barclays Center in New York.

Haney joined “Inside The Ring” on Monday to share an update on the fight.

“I can’t say that it’s a done deal yet,” said Haney. “We are working on it. I think that it’s very likely that it will happen. I think it’s a good fight for boxing and a chance for me to pick up another belt and beat the guy who beat Ryan Garcia. I'll move up higher in the pound-for-pound list and show how great I really am.”

Haney (33-0, 18 KOs, 1 NC) is the WBO welterweight champion, ranked No. 1 by The Ring in the division and is The Ring’s No. 9 pound-for-pound fighter. Haney, a three-division champion, knocked down and bested Brian Norman Jr. by unanimous decision in November for the title he currently holds.

Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) is the WBA titleholder and is rated No. 5 by The Ring at 147 pounds. Romero scored a massive upset win against Garcia in May, in which he dropped Garcia en route to a unanimous decision win. Romero's victory has aged well, as Garcia rebounded to beat Mario Barrios for the WBC title last month.

“Rolly has a very awkward style, and that's what makes it hard for guys to beat him,” said Haney. “Ryan had a lot of trouble with him just because he didn't know how to adjust to his awkwardness.

“This is a fight where I go in there, have fun, and show how good I really am. With a guy like Rolly, I'll be able to showcase a lot more of my arsenal, bring a lot more tools, and really open up on him.”

Devin Haney deep in talks over ‘very likely’ next fight with Ryan Garcia rematch to follow

Devin Haney and Rolly Romero are finalising terms for a welterweight unification fight in May.

'The Dream' snatched the WBO 147lbs strap from Brian Norman Jr in November via a lopsided unanimous decision, and is now hoping to add Romero's WBA belt to his collection.

“I can’t say that it’s a done deal yet,” Haney told Ring Magazine.

“We are working on it. I think that it’s very likely that it will happen [next].

"I think it’s a good fight for boxing and a chance for me to pick up another belt and beat the guy who beat Ryan Garcia.

"I'll move up higher in the pound-for-pound list and show how great I really am...

“Rolly has a very awkward style, and that's what makes it hard for guys to beat him.

“Ryan had a lot of trouble with him just because he didn't know how to adjust to his awkwardness.

“This is a fight where I go in there, have fun, and show how good I really am.

"With a guy like Rolly, I'll be able to showcase a lot more of my arsenal, bring a lot more tools, and really open up on him.”

Romero picked up the WBA 'regular' belt in May, outpointing Ryan Garcia in a low-output affair, before being upgraded to full world champion three months later.

During a recent interview with the Night Cap Show, posted on Thursday, Romero claimed that he had signed his side of the deal, but Haney hadn't.

"I think we have Devin lined up for the end of May," he said.

"But it's been a whole week now, and they are going back and forth.

"They don't want to sign the contract, but it is looking like they will."

According to various reports, the fight is being lined up for May 30 at New York's Barclays Center.

Both Haney and Romero had their darkest nights as professionals in the famous venue.

Romero was knocked out by Gervonta Davis at the Barclays Center in May 2022, while Haney's infamous inaugural encounter with Garcia took place at the same site.

Devin Haney vs Rolly Romero hits snag as mandatory challenger calls for ‘justice’

The potential unification showdown between Devin Haney and Rolando Romero has been doused with uncertainty, as mandatory challenger Shakhram Giyasov demands that justice is served.

Despite Giyasov’s status as the WBA ‘interim’ champion, it is now approaching three years and he is still yet to secure his shot at Romero’s world title.

Instead, the WBA welterweight champion has been in negotiations for a showdown with WBO titlist Haney, revealing a possible date and location earlier this month.

But while the pair appeared set to collide at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, on May 30, there is now a chance that ‘Rolly’ will be ordered to defend his title against Giyasov.

The 30-year-old was elevated from ‘Regular’ to full world champion following his last outing, a unanimous decision victory over Ryan Garcia in May 2025.

After that, the American was exploring a whole host of options, including a rematch with Garcia, before ultimately arriving at the negotiating table with Haney.

‘The Dream’ became a three-division world champion last November, claiming his WBO title at 147lbs by dethroning Brian Norman Jr with a unanimous decision victory.

But while Haney clearly represents his preferred option, it would seem that Romero could instead be compelled to fulfil his mandatory obligation against Giyasov.

Speaking with World Boxing News, the Uzbek called for the WBA to order their fight while, at the same time, confirming his readiness for any world title opportunity.

“I hope that there will be justice. I’m always ready for all fights. It doesn’t matter who the opponent is – the most important [thing is] belts and the big fights.”

The 32-year-old has not fought since last April, back when he defended his ‘interim’ title with a fourth-round stoppage victory over Franco Maximiliano Ocampo.

‘He’s afraid to get hit’: Negotiations between Rolly Romero and Devin Haney fall apart

Rolly Romero says he did his best to make a fight with Devin Haney.

Despite a lot of talk between the two fighters as of late, it appears that Rolly Romero and Devin Haney won’t be fighting one another after all, as talks have broken down. Initially when speaking on the negotiations, Haney readily admitted that he received what he deemed to be a very fair offer from Rolly and they only really needed to iron out the details.

Fast forward a short time later and Haney doesn’t appear at all satisfied with the financial terms of the agreement, as he outlined in a post on social media. Rolly, for his part, basically calls out Haney for balking when it was time to put pen to paper.

“I want everybody to know I tried my absolute hardest to make this Devin fight,” Rolly said. “Gave him 50% of the split, of everything, and apparently it’s not enough money but it’s a unification, it’s on PBC, it’s on Amazon Prime, it’s a PPV, all this stuff. And on top of that you get Amazon promoting it, PBC promoting, you get me promoting it — because Devin cannot promote anything to save his life. We’re talking about a dude that was on my undercard. So, it’s actually insane.

“Obviously, he’s afraid to get hit. We saw what I did to Ryan with no effort at all, so can you imagine what I do to Devin? Devin only does good when fighters are slow and have no power…He just don’t want to fight ‘cause he’s scared.”

With this fight currently going nowhere fast, both fighters will have to look elsewhere.

Devin Haney Rejects Rolly Romero Fight Over $6M Cost Demand

Haney claims deal required him to earn only after event expenses were covered before 50-50 split

Devin Haney says his proposed fight with Rolando Romero fell apart over a deal structure tied to event costs. He said he would only earn after $6 million in expenses were covered before a 50-50 split.

Haney said the offer required him to wait until roughly $6 million in event expenses were covered before earning anything, followed by a 50-50 split with Romero. He presented the terms as misaligned with his standing, noting Romero has never earned $2 million for a single fight.

“They came to me with a list of expenses of 6 million & I make my first dollar after the 6 million is allocated,” Haney said on X. “& on top of it all, I split it 50% with Rolando, who hasn’t made 2 million in one fight ever!”

The explanation shifts the focus from willingness to fight to the deal structure. The proposed bout had been targeted for May 30 and was positioned as a significant welterweight matchup, but the terms appear to have followed a model where fighters are paid from remaining revenue after costs rather than through a guaranteed purse.

If you look at this through Haney’s lens, it’s a refusal to be the only one gambling. Haney is essentially saying, “I’m the star, yet I’m the one taking all the financial risk while Rolly gets a 50% split of the upside.”

In boxing, a “pricing out” move is often a polite way of saying no, but here, the specific terms Haney leaked, waiting for $6 million in costs to be cleared before earning a cent, suggest a deal that was objectively lopsided for a fighter of his status.

A revenue-first model increases upside if the event performs, but it also transfers financial exposure onto the fighters if it does not. His comments suggest he was not prepared to take that risk under equal-split terms.

This reminds of when Hopkins rematched Jones.

Contract for that one stated that the first $3.5 million PROFIT would go to GBP and Hopkins.

Then Jones would be paid with profits exceeding that amount.

Based on the PPV sales and the ticket sales, the fight probably made less than $3.5 million in profit after cable/service providers and other were paid.

So in that case, Jones was probably not paid at all. Fought for free. :oo

‘I never want to hear them call me out again’: Rolly Romero responds to failed talks with Devin Haney

Rolly Romero says none of the top fighters around his weight class want to fight him.

During a conversation with Fight Hub TV, Rolly Romero talks about not being able to secure a fight with Devin Haney after it initially seemed to be tracking and breaks down why he says he’s the most avoided fighter in the entire sport.

“I told you they were just lying the whole time,” Romero said. “They said I sent them a great offer, did they not? They said all this stuff but they wanted any way out because Devin doesn’t have a chin. They like to waste people’s time, ‘oh, Deebo Dev doesn’t duck anybody.’ Before it was like because ‘I wasn’t entertaining’ but I’m like ‘we’re going to see, let’s press at it’ and now it shows. Those guys are deceitful, they lie nonstop.

“Everything that Devin and Bill touch gets shattered, every promotion company, because they cannot do anything, they cannot generate views, they cannot generate income for anybody and they know that. So they didn’t want to bet on themselves because, well, they know they are not worth anything. I never want to hear them call me out again or bring me up or any of that stuff. It’s dead. There’s no ifs, ands, buts about it — it’s done.”

Romero was then asked about Haney saying the terms of the deal weren’t to his liking.

“We’re putting up all the money, what more does he want?” Romero asked. “It’s a 50/50 split, we’re putting up all the money. Bet on yourself. You’re Devin Haney Promotions, right? That’s how it works, right? We told him, ‘go sell your 50% to DAZN, or go sell your 50% to —’ nobody wanted to put up the money because they know there was no money because Devin can’t sell. That’s what it is.

“It would’ve been Amazon and they could’ve brought in DAZN, we gave them permission to bring on DAZN or whoever they want. It would’ve been Amazon/DAZN.

“I am literally the most avoided fighter in boxing. I’ve had five mega fights duck me. Conor Benn ducked me as clear as day, we had the whole deal set up…Another one is Ryan, who disappeared. And then the Pacquiao stuff disappeared…Pacquiao disappeared long before Floyd even came into the picture [for a supposed rematch]…If I was such a bum they would call come take my title for a good purse, right? They’re all ducking me, every single one of them.”

‘Devin is scared of me’: Rolly Romero says Haney fight will never happen

Rolly Romero defends his title against Teofimo Lopez after he was unable to make deals with Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney.

During an interview with Fight Hub TV, Rolly Romero fielded some questions from his old elementary school, most notably about the chances we ever see him in the ring with Ryan Garcia again, and whether he’ll ever square off with Devin Haney.

Rolly on Ryan Garcia wanting the winner of his fight with Teofimo
“Didn’t he duck me twice? He ducked me after our direct rematch clause and then he ducked me after he fought Barrios. You’re going to tell me this dude wants to fight? He’s just chasing whatever clout he can get right now. Same way he calls out everybody in the world and doesn’t fight anybody. Don’t bring up Ryan Garcia, he’s a clout-chasing fool.”

On the potential for a unification fight with Devin Haney
“No. We sent him an offer, a great lucrative offer. He decided not to take the fight because Devin Haney Promotions isn’t a real promotion company, as we see he can’t bid in own purse bids because he’s not a real promotion company. On top of that, they’re always fighting for a going out of business sale. But regardless of everything, me and Devin are never going to fight because Devin is scared of me, and I’m not going to waste my time.”
